The Last Of Us 3 Could Happen If The Story Is "Worthy" Enough

The Last of Us creative director Neil Druckmann believes in quality over quantity.

The second series of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us has been critically acclaimed since it debuted on HBO Max earlier this year, and with the TV adaptation earning rave reviews, fans are wondering if this could result in a third game being made. The Last of Us creative director Neil Druckmann says that he'd be keen to revisit the post-apocalyptic series, provided that certain conditions are met.

One of the primary requirements for Druckmann is that he'd want the threequel to have a story that's "worthy" of being set in The Last of Us series. The creator says that he aims for quality over quantity, an artistic vision that has extended to other projects he has worked on.

"While I am the caretaker of this franchise, whatever the title is that Sony has entrusted me with, it's important for me that everything is of high quality. I don't want to just make a lot of it. I want to just be very thoughtful about everything that we make," Druckmann said in an interview with Sacred Symbols.

"When we did the show, now we've teamed up with, I feel like, the best TV-makers, with HBO. We're making the best version of it. If we were ever to come back to it, I want to make sure that it's a story worthy of The Last Of Us. I love that world. I love these characters. With the right opportunity, yeah, I would totally jump at it."

So far, there have been only two games set in The Last of Us series. Both of these titles have been remastered--the first game has been remastered twice--and there was even a live-service spin-off game in development before it was canceled as Naughty Dog decided to focus on single-player games instead. While the studio is currently working on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet alongside at least one other game, Druckmann has mentioned in the past that he does have a concept for The Last of Us 3 and that he feels like there could probably be "one more chapter to the story," to tell.

While we do know that he is currently working on another Naughty Dog title other than Intergalactic, he did mention that he has taken on more of a producer role that has allowed him to mentor the team developing this mystery title.

New protagonist. Ellie's immunity is widely known and she's being hunted for it. -shrug-

There is a 20 year gap between the initial outbreak and when we start the journey with Joel and Tess in the Boston QZ, there has to be a story worth telling in that 20 year gap.

I wish publishers took the stance of, "We'll make a sequel if we've got good ideas for it." and not just, "The IP is profitable, keep making content until it isn't." : \

Yea, won't be touching or buying another Naughty Dog game unless they rectify their mistake and release Tlou 3 with a multiplayer.

@decadentdescent: Not every game needs a multiplayer. There are loads of action/shooter/stealth games out there. Let TLoU be single player and story driven.

@chrono_phasia: Part 2 on PS5 and PC has a mode that distills it down to pure randomized combat encounters, it's fun but there was definitely a missed opportunity to include co-op there. It's like if Horde or Firefight or Zombies were somehow limited to single player only

Yeah, see, video gamers just don't share the same opinions as most who prefer watching TV. I personally believe that Neil would actually do a better job with the third game but as I stated, video games and TV are different. The show is doing great and it's bringing people's attention towards the video games but the day 1 fan base from the PS3 era, they still seem pretty mad about Joel. Lol. I just hate that the games have so much dialogue. Like, get to the gameplay already.

@gr4h4m833zy: I'm the day 1 fan base from the PS3 era and I like the show.

The games' cutscenes can be skipped and the dialogue volume can be muted, if you don't care.

@Spartan_418: how can you like the show with the casting of ellie? She literally looks terrified in every scene with infected. Ellie is supposed to be ruthless.

@restatbonfire: I don't like every part of it and I wish Show Ellie acted like more of a mature, hardened survivor. But I've also kind of accepted her as a different character doing her own thing, I'm not constantly comparing it to the source material.

It also has positives like Dina being a better, stronger character than before

@Spartan_418: well I didn't say it was bad. I just thought there was too much of it.
