The Last of Us Season 2 Finale Viewership Massively Down Compared To Season 1

However, that doesn't tell the whole story.

HBO's The Last of Us series just wrapped up its second season, and viewership across all platforms for the finale reached 3.7 million people. That's down 30% from the 5.3 million viewers for the Season 2 premiere in April (via Variety) and down 55% from the 8.2 million viewers for the Season 1 finale in 2023.

Importantly, these figures count the number of viewers for their Sunday night showings alone. Many people cannot or choose not to watch new episodes on the nights they air. Some people also wait for the entire run of episodes to debut before watching so they can binge-watch an entire season quickly.

Season 2 is doing better than Season 1 overall, with HBO reporting that Season 2 has reached 37 million average viewers per episode compared to 32 million for Season 1. This counts viewers after 90 days on all platforms.

The Last of Us Season 2 wrapped up with a dramatic cliffhanger that leads into an upcoming third season that will focus on Abby, who is played by Kaitlyn Dever. A fourth season is likely to follow later on. As of yet, however, HBO has not announced a Season 3 release date or renewed the show for a fourth.

As for the game series, Naughty Dog has not announced The Last of Us 3--though there have been many clues. What is confirmed, however, is that Naughty Dog is making a new IP called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and at least one other game. Naughty Dog was previously developing a multiplayer Last of Us game, but it was canceled.

I mean it's not even surprising. Many people who actually liked your first game didn't enjoy the second game.

A story based on the second game would just have less fans.

@snazzydrew: Yeah it is a bummer.

But I see the arc, the directors are taking this series or game trilogy. The first game is more about Joel and the loss of his innocent daughter, how the world changed, and how he changed. The second act of the trilogy now the worlds has devolved further with no hope of salvation, as this also is Ellie state of being. Who loses her savior, innocence, and hope for the world. A big setup for the third act, salvation of innocence for Ellie and the world.

Unlike, the Walking Dead whose premise, was year to year based off of actors/characters that would or would not continue contracts, the Last of Us has wanted to tell of a story of the world's loss related to 'insert whatever political issue of the day', and the growth, weight of each characters soul. I mean, I see tons of reflection of religious text throughout this weighty show. All culminating into a final act III.

The second act has to be just a big ole bummer, or else you would not have the payoff in the third act... if there is a payoff in the third act. It could just be another bummer to finish the show and or try to birth more sequels. But then again, Naughty Dog as they are now, can afford to finish this game trilogy however they want, and I think they want to take it to the finish line.

Many did not like the second game's story, but by far many enjoyed the game itself. Because it was a heavy downer. (and its sales were HUGE)

I watched 3 episodes of s2 and realised how they butchered the script from tlou2. Every single scene was way better in the game. The game was provocative and adult. The show is a casual teen netflix slasher.

The show made me buy the remaster on ps5 and replay it. Its such a masterclass. And today, seeing how counter-woke culture has potentially gone too far - the identity politics from the game is almost... a breath of fresh air. (!?)

I like the Bella tbh. But the show made the glaringly stupid choice of making her portray Ellies violence way too early starting in s1. So in the show, the focus has shifted. Ellie was the fkd up butch masochist and they seemingly felt forced to make Abby girlier. Which in it self messed with the balance and ultimately set a completely new tone for the series. sucks.

Its also visually corny.

@nilsdoen: I also, felt the game's plotline and time skips were poorly relayed into the tv show. The overall point of vengeance, innocence, morality, was poorly told with so many characters in the game, and in this show even worse. All while trying to show the world as going through the same.

You would almost needed a CC of who was who, dating who, pregnant, wanting vengeance, and associated with what group or cult or whatever. Like LOST, WD, etc. TLOU 2 is a great game, even with a bummer of story, but it had the pleasure or telling its story over many hours, along with tons of subtext throughout the game, while the season can only do so much.

I would have cut out, alot of the teen angst and revenge of all of the side characters by a lot. Slow burned Ellie's loss of innocence and what she has to give up for vengeance. I mean - this is a Moses on the mound bible story basically, with a downer of a second act to setup the 3rd act, hopefully with a good pay off.

Hey maybe if they have the time to wrap it all up, someday post 3rd game, or praying not insert more seasons into this series, maybe the tv show will also have a good final season wrapping it all up.

They killed a character that carried the whole show. S2 is Godawful without him. Bella Ramsey is a fine actor but she doesnt have the range necessary to play Ellie as Iconicly as the Games.

Tlou 2 was generally hated because of the awful plot. They ran with the same script for the show and got the same results. Literal insanity
