The Last Of Us TV Series Heads To HBO With Chernobyl Creator, Game's Writer

Game director Neil Druckmann is also involved with the project.

A television adaptation of Naughty Dog's critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic action game, The Last of Us, is now in the works at HBO. The adaptation, which is intended to be a series, will be led by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin, with game director Neil Druckmann helping to pen the script and executive produce the series.

Alongside Druckmann, Naughty Dog president Evan Wells will also serve as executive producer. The HBO TV series will be co-produced by Sony Pictures Television, with PlayStation Productions also attached. Sony already has an Uncharted film adaptation in the works, but The Last of Us will be PlayStation Productions' first TV series.

Not much is known about HBO's The Last of Us yet, but The Hollywood Reporter states that the TV series will follow the events of the first game. THR also notes that, with The Last of Us Part II coming to PlayStation 4 on May 29, there's a "possibility of additional content based on the forthcoming game sequel."

Mazin spoke highly of both Druckmann and The Last of Us, saying, "Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus. Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I'm so honored to do it in partnership with Neil."

Druckmann shared a similar sentiment about Mazin and Chernobyl: "From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and understanding of The Last of Us. With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn't think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television series."

According to Sony Pictures Television co-president Chris Parnell, The Last of Us TV series won't be its last video game adaptation. "This is the first of many shows we intend to develop with our friends at PlayStation Productions," Parnell said.

There was, at a time, a Last of Us film in development. But Druckmann said in April 2016 that the project entered "development hell." In June of the same year, Druckmann said the project hadn't made any progress in years. He then noted in February 2018 that he didn't "want that movie to be made."

Pass. With everything going on right now I really don't need to see another example of how screwed humanity is because of whatever.

I am never excited about adaptations from video games, probably because they've always been so bad. But this, this actually sounds extremely promising. Looking forward to it.

If it's nearly as good as Chernobyl, The Last of US should be a hit series. I can't wait to see the Clickers.

This doesn't worry me.

The Uncharted Movie is where my troubles lie. Hollywood is showing all signs that they are going to destroy a great legacy.

Another Naughty Dog movie game that doesn't need to be on another medium.

Maisie Williams as Ellie. It must be. Yes, she’s a few years older now, but still. Make it happen hbo.

@olddadgamer: Isn't Maisie Williams like 23? Ellie's 14 in the game...

@livedreamplay: So? People play younger than their age all the time. Sarah Michelle Gellar was 24 when she was playing Buffy (Allison Hanigan was 29 and the dude who played Xander was 32!) and they were in high school. That's just one show. Happens all the time.

@olddadgamer: Why would we intentionally do this though, unless forced by circumstances. There are plenty talented young actresses that can do a great job, why have a 23 year old do it. Not saying that the show can't be successful, just saying there's no point...

So a tv series in a genre that is already over saturated that panders to fans of the video game? Fail....

That's some good news. I have nothing against HBO, even with their recent disasters on game of thrones, westworld, watchmen, etc.. But there's always hope, they can rise their quality standards once more.

@gleencross: It's probably going to have a serious Chernobyl vibe since the game is pretty damn dark and since it's made by the creator of Chernobyl...

This is why video games keep getting censored. Hollywood keeps pushing their agendas onto video game industry and the masses. This in turn has a global effect.

I wish video games was still considered basement dwelling geek nobodies

@Henhen420: I’m sorry, but what “agenda” are they pushing here exactly?

And videogames were never just for basement dwelling geeks, basically since the NES they have been standard faire in just about every household in America.

The basement dwelling geeks just take it about a dozen steps too far and trade a healthy normal social life to solely play games. They are also the reason every game now has a “progression system” of skill ups and micro-DLC to artificially inflate the games lifecycle. Their lives have become one artificial carrot on a stick after another.

@Baconstrip78: Video gaming has not been more mainstream than it is now. Hollywood has had a hand in that. Hollywood actors get hired to do acting for motion cap, voice acting and video game shows and movies. This attracts more people into video games. And some of those new people probably are brainwashed with the political correctness of hollywood and complain about everything. Hollywood doesn’t even actually need to be a part of video games either. They just post something on social media about political correctness and it basically becomes a global affair.

Video game paid progression most likely came from mobile games and greedy developers. Other companies probably realized how much profit this model makes and followed

I always assume video game adaptations to TV/movies will suck but Chernobyl was good, this might actually turn out ok.

@lokar82: you list a mini series about a real life event as why you think a video game to tv/movie wont suck that's like taking deep sea diving to become a lawyer there two completely different things.

@dragoonmike: it's not, good directing makes or breaks movies. It's like swimming and deep sea diving, your analogy is stupid. Also Chernobyl isn't historically accurate to the t.

@GalvatronType_R: Except it's about one of the most annoying characters that ever graced a video game in Ellie. Can't they just kill her off and get decent characters in Last of us 2?. I'd rather see a wizened old Joel than a woke Ellie.

@deviltaz35: Well... You know what to do... Don´t play TLOU 2 and don´t see the serie... It´s an easy way out. If you already think to know whats coming whats the point? I was happy with just TLOU 1, but I´ll give it a go... and then I'll criticize... not before...

@ronaldmcreagan: I think the two of you missed the sexual assault element in the first game that turned her into a “woke lesbian”.

Maybe this game is too mature for you. Luigis Mansion might be more your speed.
