The Last Of Us Won't Recast Ellie For Season 2

As it happens, Bella Ramsey is currently the same age as Ellie in The Last of Us Part II.

HBO's The Last of Us series is returning for a second season, and there will be a time jump. But the network is not going to recast actress Bella Ramsey.

Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann, who is also a writer on the TV series, said during a roundtable interview with press that the only way the team would consider recasting Ellie would be if Ramsey wanted to leave the series. "Even then, I'm not sure we would grant her that. We might still force her to come back to Season 2," he joked, as reported by IGN.

Now Playing: The Last of Us Finale Breakdown: The Great Joel Debate, Merle Dandridge Interview

Druckmann said with the original Last of Us game, Naughty Dog got "incredibly lucky" to find actress Ashley Johnson. And then for the TV series, Druckmann said "somehow we got lighting in a bottle again with Bella."

Showrunner Craig Mazin pointed out that Ramsey is now 19 years old, which is the same age as Ellie in The Last of Us Part II. The second season will begin filming this year, and if cameras start rolling before September 30, at least some of the series will be filmed while Ramsey is the same age as the character she is playing. Ramsey turns 20 on September 30.

The Last of Us Part II picks up five years after the first game, and the TV series is expected to adopt that time jump as well. Season 2 will have some "radically" different changes from the game, though. It's also been confirmed that Season 2 will not tell the entire story of The Last of Us Part II, which suggests a third season might be coming next.

For more on HBO's The Last of Us, check out what Marlene actress Merle Dandridge had to say about the heartbreaking season finale.

As for the game series, Naughty Dog is making a new The Last of Us multiplayer game. After that, Naughty Dog might make The Last of Us Part III, or it might not.

Literally the ugliest person ive seen on a show ever .

This is where woke culture turns into a parody of itself. "Theyve" had people unable to tell their gender their whole life.. So in the modern world that can make you decide your trans.

It used to be obvious if you cant tell a girls a girl thats a way of objectively realizing their hideous.

Yet she took it as a compliment and somehow made a hollywood career of it.

Id find it hilarious but im being forced to look at that freak mug to see my fav video game as a show.

She has a huge forehead, almost distractingly so.

But, She is fine actress and does well in the role. Happy to see what they do with season 2.

The article says 'recast' they mean that they will not find a new actress. She has also confirmed she will be back in season 2. I know reading is hard, but, let;s give it a try?

She was perfect Ellie. Recasting her, or Pedro, would be insane.

@Divisionbell: Wrong... Not recasting her is the mistake. She was perfect on this one, but ion Part 2 this Ellie (physically) does not exist. You need a bigger, older (she has the age but not the looks) athletic and stronger Ellie.

I’m a little torn on Bella as Ellie in season 2. Ellie grows up a lot from Part 1 to Part 2 and she matures a lot as well. Season 2 will require Bella to have much more serious acting chops to continue doing Ellie justice. She absolutely nailed young Ellie, but we’ll see if Part 2 translates as good. I hope she’s nails it again, but time will tell.

I didn't even realize this would be a conversation.

Someone please correct my math if I'm wrong, but in the first game, Ellie was 13, and then there was a five-year time jump, which would make her 18 for the events of part 2.

Bella Ramsey is already 19.

Yes... But she looks like 14, 16 at best... LOL

Tom Holland is also a grown man... but he still looks like an adolescent...

@cejay0813: She did a fantastic job. I think the issue is that Bella looks like a 14 year old and will continue to look that age for probably many years to come. So I guess the question is how are they going to make her look older. And she's so short too. Worse case it may very well just come off like Part 1 Ellie is in Part 2, acting like a grown up, doing grown up things, but still looking like a child. So I'm curious how they'll make it work. Hope they can because I loved the show.

@mooglestar: I hope they don't try to explain it away with something like "oh it's the fact she was bit, it stunted her growth" or some nonsense lore argument like that which would conflict with the games.

@Akriel_Boulve: I mean, maybe if they do some camera angle tricks (worked for Gandalf) they could make her seem taller than she is. Maybe dye her hair darker, give her the tattoo. Also if she got a bit slimmer/toned or something. Not that she's chubby or anything. Just thinking of what their options are to make it seem like years have passed.

If Hollywood can make 5'6" Al Pacino look average height, or make Charlize Theron look like Aileen Wuornos -- I can't imagine it will be that difficult to get Bella Ramsey to look a few years older.

I'm guessing part III of the game might be coming after all of this huge success.

Although, if Druckmann doesn't have more story in him, he may not want to go out with a fizzle.

@RussellMartin: Given the absolute mess of a narrative that TLOU2 was, he'd better hire some superior writers to clean up after him to close out the franchise proper. There's no shame in it, even George Lucas had to be reigned in by better directors and storytellers who saw obvious problems with some of the things he was pushing for. I mean for goodness sake, the man wanted Yoda to be a Chimpanzee...

@blindbsnake: Who said I couldn't explain why? It's been done dozens of times but here are the highlights

1. Ellie is still pissed at Joel years after he saved her life and treats him like garbage for it. Yet we are still to believe that after so much anger and vitriol for these many years that she still cares enough about him to go on an ultimate revenge quest sacrificing everything that she now has? Right.

2. Joel and Tommy encounter a roaming group and give their real names and the location of their town despite everything that happened in the first game.

3. Abby doesn't even get confirmation that this Joel is THE Joel before shooting him in the leg AFTER he just saved her life.

4. Ellie, a well seasoned survival veteran who single handedly took down several groups of fully armed and powerful men, just bursts in the front door and is disarmed immediately like an absolute rookie.

5. Abby keeps letting Ellie live even after she kills her friends and after she swears revenge against her. Ditto for Tommy who is Joel's brother and would have been an assumed additional casualty along with Joel for Abby's revenge plot.

6. Tommy asserts that Abby's group MUST be going to Seattle because they had a logo on their jackets. As if wearing an I <3 NY shirt means you're going to NYC smh.

7. Everyone other than Ellie and Abby have ZERO survival skills and most are pregnant running around an extremely dangerous world.

8. The Seraphites don't kill Abby outright after capturing her, knowing how dangerous she is.

9. Owen objected to killing an unarmed Seraphite, but didn't complain about killing an unarmed Joel ESPECIALLY after he saved Abby's life.

10. Ellie could shank Abbie while she's on the cross, but instead cuts her down, because reasons.

And finally: A flashback of Joel causes the final fight, which is then stopped by yet another flashback of Joel. Seriously what is this game?

I could go on, but there are so many more plot holes, contrivances, and outright idiotic writing in TLOU2 that it's ridiculous that you would try to defend it.

@Akriel_Boulve: No offense, but I don't think you understood the game at all. You've created the most straw man argument with these points. I feel you went into it hating the narrative because of Joel being killed, and that upset you because you saw him as the hero of the first game, even though he was a villain.

edit: was curious to know more of your viewpoints, so I read some of your past comments in the forums. Wow. Now it is clear why you created such terrible points for not liking the game. You're clearly upset they included a trans character and a muscular woman as a main character.

@taylorspace: For someone who complains about straw men, you sure make a lot of them about me.

First off, I realize that Joel HAD to die, because this is Ellie's story. I recognize this, though I would not accept your characterization that he was a villain, specifically because this is a very dirty world full of grey with little black and white. My issue is HOW he died. The entire first game was focused on how NOT to get into situations like what happened with him and Abby, and yet that all got tossed out the window because they couldn't set up a proper way to catch him off guard in a more realistic and understandable way given the world they live in.

Second, how in the ever loving hell did you get an argument that I'm upset about a trans character exactly? Because I'm not.

Same goes for muscular woman. I didn't like Abby as a character because she was unbelievable as a real person, not because she was muscular. Plenty of strong/muscular and powerful women have been exceptional in games, such as The Boss, Aloy, Lightning, Lara, etc etc. because they were written well.

So yeah take your straw men arguments about my viewpoints elsewhere and either engage with me and my points directly or shove off mate.

@Akriel_Boulve: "it's ridiculous that you would try to defend it."

Nah... As I will prove you, the only ridiculous thing is to criticize something you don't understand... You made so many cliché mistakes in your claims, and all you need is to pay attention to the story, nothing more.

"it's been done dozens of times but here are the highlights"

Yes... and in the first week of game release there was no counter reply, but by now you had enough time to understand (as I will explain) how wrong those claims were, mostly because those claims are based in lies...

1. Ellie is pissed with Joel, that's true. She found out, not so many years ago the lie behind her salvation. In her mind Joel didn't save her, he took her purpose (value) from her. It's irrelevant how we feel about it, the only thing that matters is what Ellie feels.

"Yet we are still to believe that after so much anger and vitriol for these many years that she still cares enough about him..."

First of all, it's not "anger and vitriol", its a mix of betrayal pain and frustration. But if you dont know why Ellie still cares... without a doubt you didn't played the end of the game. (PS: it explains the beginning of the game LOL).

2. First lie... They encounter Abby... that's when Tommy (in a battle for their lives) introduces himself and Joel. There is no reason to lie to the group because one of the members already knew their names...

3. Abby finds a Joel that travels with a Tommy, in a place were the Tommy they are searching lives and who has a brother who name is Joel... Do you really want to go deeper on this topic? It's a bit ridicule of how obvious it is...

4. Let's forget for a moment that the group that she encounters have well prepared fighters, that Abby beats Ellie easily in a one on one fight, and the fact that Ellie is not superwomen... she knows that something is wrong with Joel and she is caught in a trap... nothing out of ordinary. Even Joel falls in many traps in TLOU1.

5. I dont get what you mean by this point. Abby allows Ellie two live twice, and both times because the light in her path (Owen and Lev) stop her from doing it.

6. Damn... it's this really a critic? What about the weather...

7. Everyone has survival skills. The fact that Mel and Dina are pregnant does not change that fact. But I will grant you one thing, Mel in the battlefront is not a clever narrative choice. To me, the only thing I can criticize about the story.

8. LOL... Clearly they don't know... The Seraphites have a killing ritual, and Abby was going to suffer that ritual. Lev and Yara become the wild card in that situation...

9. Owen is the reason for Ellie and Tommy being alive. That alone should tell you everything you need to know. Forget everything you think you know about Joel, because what you think and feel is irrelevant, all that matters is how this group sees Joel. And for them Joel is not a father or a protector, he is the devil.

10. No, not because reasons. This is way too complex to explain (except if you want a wall of text). The main points are; Ellie is searching for Abby but what she finds is not Abby and... Ellie thinks she is there for revenge, but she is not... that train is over since the farm scene. The Ellie that you played in the first part of the game would have killed Abby in the pole. But this is a different Ellie.

"Seriously what is this game?"

Clearly something way too complex for you to understand... and I´m not saying it is a complex story... LOL

In a simplified way, Ellie wants the pain/fear/sorrow/sadness to stop, and she thinks that killing (achieving revenge) would bring her peace. The first image of Joel is his last moment, all in blood and suffering, that triggers her determination to finish the job, and that's why she threatens Lev.

When she is achieving her so called goal, she realises that killing Abby would not bring her peace, that she would kill a child in the process (lev), and that's when the vision of Joel pops up, but this time the vision of her last conversation, the moment of forgiving and understanding. And that's when she allows Abby to live.

Keep in mind this is the shortest explanation. There is ton of content I did not explored to justify Ellies last actions.

" there are so many more plot holes, contrivances, and outright idiotic writing in TLOU2"

On the contrary, from a narrative perspective the game is close to perfection. Except the pregnant women in the battlefront, and how easy Abby finds Joel and Tommy (mere luck), the game is a narrative masterpiece. That doesn't means you have to like it, personal taste is not a debatable thing. But you need to understand the difference between personal taste and wrong criticism.

@blindbsnake: First off my comment about "it's been done dozens of times" was about my personal refutation on the game, not the internets, and I didn't play the game in the first week of release, so maybe stop telling me I don't understand things, when you are clearly having parsing issues yourself. In any case.

1. It absolutely is anger and vitriol that are caused by her sense of betrayal and frustration. You realize that these things are not mutually exclusive, yeah? The point is that their relationship was FAR too close for her to keep this up for this many years after the fact. After all, she cared for him after he was impaled for months while he recovered in the first game. Their roles reversed and she was the "parent" cleaning him, helping him use the restroom, hunting, gathering firewood, everything. This formed a bond that should not be so easy to sour. Maybe you've never had someone whom you've had to care for so completely, but that forms an incredibly powerful bond that is not shown here.

2. How is this a Lie exactly? Yes, they encounter Abby and having learned NOTHING from the first game, Tommy gives her their names. This is a narrative problem because they would have established that they NEVER give real names, especially because of Joel's past and the fact that someone like Abby might be out there seeking revenge for the Fireflies. You act like this is just a gimme, but it's not. They would have this hammered into their heads so hard they might have even just upright changed their names to something else to avoid accidental divulgence like what happened here. Further, the fact that Joel didn't give Tommy the side eye or otherwise castigate him for breaking their rules further shows that they had to dumb them down from the previous game to make the death scene happen the way it did.

3. See point 2, but also Joel could have mitigated the issue by saying a different last name. Or better yet, he could tell Abby that their "real" names are Billy and Bert, but that they introduce themselves as Joel and Tommy because they get less trouble from strangers that way since they're known and powerful in the area. There were a lot of ways that Joel, being smart and quick on his feet, could have mitigated the damage done by Tommy even if we accept the slipup as realistic.

4. So we're supposed to just forget all the instances where Ellie takes down large numbers of well armed full grown men in TLOU1 so that your pet narrative can happen in this way...ok, sure. Ellie was decidedly NOT caught in a trap, she walked in on them and somehow didn't see the person on the other side of the door who disarms her when she bursts in. If it were a trap they wouldn't have been caught off guard by her like they were. So you're already mischaracterizing the events in the game as portrayed. The fact she burst in the front without casing the place IS the problem. Younger Ellie wouldn't have done that, but I guess older Ellie is just dumb now because reasons.

5. The fact that Owen stops Abby is a whole other problem, given that he killed unarmed people as well in the past and allowed Joel to be killed unarmed and in brutal fashion as well. The point is that Ellie keeps causing Abby problems, severe problems, but Abby keeps letting her live, which doesn't make sense in this brutal world.

6. This absolutely is a problem with the narrative. In a game about survival against monsters, desperate humans, and even cults, where being able to hide and not be tracked by others is VERY important, we're supposed to just accept that they have big emblems about where to find them on their jackets AND that that is where they were headed right after killing Joel? Seriously there's so much wrong with this that I don't know where to begin, but you brush it off like it's nothing. I'm beginning to see why you don't understand the problem with the narrative and worldbuilding in this game.

7. The fact that Mel even went out to the FOB at basically 9 months pregnant absolutely says she, and her group, has no survival skills. A pregnant woman is a liability when moving about, and especially when fighting. Also the fact she didn't try to use her pregnancy as a defense against Ellie killing her was further proof she had no survival skills. That would be the first thing to shout when faced with combat, even if only as a distraction. Most people don't want to kill anyone, even fewer would be willing to kill a pregnant woman. The psychological effect alone would be worth it's weight in gold against human enemies. In any case, the rest of the cast constantly require Ellie or Abby to save them and rarely can do anything on their own, there are too many examples to cite.

8. Abby fought off several of them while she was on the ground and bit one of their ears off. I'd say that deserves a busted knee cap prior to killing ritual in the forest at least.

9. You can't hand wave this one away. Yes he kept Ellie and Tommy alive, but he did NOT keep Joel alive or even attempt to reason with Abby right after he saved her life! I get that they see Joel as the Devil, but when the Devil just saved your flippin' life, you take a pause and question reality, especially if you're not Abby. THAT is the point. It's not a human reaction to go from comrades in arms to murder mode that quickly. They did it MUCH better in TLOU 1 when Ellie and David meet and initially work together for survival. David recognizes that she and Joel are the ones that he's been looking for for several months, but he has the humanity to give her the medicine after they fought together because that is what is good and proper in that situation. He was a bad guy, but he had some basic principles that made him a human instead of a 2D caricature of a person. THAT is the difference.

10. Funny that you make this point here, especially since you don't recognize how you are utterly defeating your own point from when Abby met Joel. Abby was looking for "The Devil" Joel, but what she found was a very human person who saved her life and was even offering her shelter and supplies. Yet she didn't hesitate and shot him and murdered him in absolute cold blood. You're trying to paint a parallel here without even knowing it, but that doesn't actually match up to the characters up to this point. Also, the fact that Ellie follows this up with the final fight is precisely what I'm talking about when I say the narrative is a big steaming mess. They have her spin on a dime mentally so many times it's just not realistic. That is my problem with this game. The first game had complex characters who were thoughtful and had clear motivations. This game has characters that make eminently ridiculous decisions left right and center and don't actually seem bear the weight of the brutal world that they are living in. If they did, they wouldn't make such callous decisions like sending a pregnant women to the front lines, or allow themselves to get caught up in relatively petty drama that ends up costing lives. This just isn't what you would expect from people fighting for basic survival.

It's not "too complex" to understand, it's too ridiculous and shallow. There is very little character depth and what's there is duplicitous and nonsensical to the point of utter absurdity, which is my primary problem. In survival situations, those who don't learn from their mistakes die by them. Literally every character from the first game got stupider by the second one just so they could push the story forward.

Ellie could have still killed Abby and saved Lev, there was nothing precluding this fact, so that point is moot at best.

If Ellie was at the point of forgiving Abby, she would not have been able to engage in the final fight. They were both beaten and battered and she had plenty of time to think on the situation, but when the moment came when Abby was about to hop in the boat, she made up her mind to finish it because she couldn't forget about Joel lying there having been savaged because he saved Abby's life. If Joel didn't save Abby, he would be alive today. He didn't even save her for any other reason than she was a human in trouble, and yet Abby still blew him away without a second thought. That is far different than what Joel did to Abby's father, and is much worse in my estimation.

You can claim the story is "close to perfection" and I would say that you are one who doesn't actually think about a story and the world it is written in and blindly accepts the framing given to you, no matter how ham handed it was given. That's fine and I'm glad you enjoyed the game and it's narrative, but I have thought long and hard on this game and it's offerings and have found it eminently lacking. I do not offer "wrong criticism" I offer well reasoned criticisms, you just don't like it because the game is to your personal taste, which is fine.

You do you, and I'll do me.

@Akriel_Boulve:

"You do you, and I'll do me."

That's the undeniable truth about life... But, I don't like to see you waste your effort, so I will reply to your statement.

"so maybe stop telling me I don't understand things"

Sorry... it was a kind way of saying you are wrong. I really thought you didn't played the game. But... moving on...

1. You are simplifying the effects of Joel's lie. Not only in Ellie, but also in the world. (let this be clear, I´m completely on Joel side in his killing spree in order to save Ellie).

You are purposely exaggerating Ellie reaction, but you are forgetting two major points, she still remains in Jackson and while not in good terms she still has a relationship with Joel. I can tell you thousands of relationships between father sand sons who ended in a way more divisive way. What you have is a very damaged person, who still believes that her life has no meaning besides " sacrifice". And yet, even if not in the linear order, you can see Ellie reaching to Joel, embracing his love and trying to move on... sadly things didn't go in the right way...

"Maybe you've never had someone whom you've had to care for so completely..."

If one thing I know is that any bond, no matter how powerful can be destroyed, that's why we need to care about things happening around us...

2. The lie is the presentation of the information, purposely trying to undermine the narrative, discarding important events that happened just minutes before.

Yes, they identify themselves to that group, but... once they are there, and Abby knowing their names, lying would have the reverse effect. You may not like to hear it, but from a narrative perspective it gives a totally different context.

Tommy gives away their names in a very specific situation. The moment they reach the group it's a totally different situation, but they already have been exposed. They did not choose to go into Abby´s group lair, it was a life or dead situation, and all they did is to play with the cards at hand.

And considering the information presented since the beginning of the game, and how Jackson works, hardly they keep always their name to themselves...

3. You can fan fiction a 1000 scenarios with Joel trying to mitigate Tommy information about their names. But you again are not paying attention to the situation at hand. They are not taking a coffee in a bar, they are facing a large group of infected, all action and emotions are at the top. Ahh right, they are survivors so they should think about everything, expect everything and know everything. Sorry to inform you, but in this world everyone are survivors, one more harsh than others, but everyone has a bit of survival in their hearts. And, as proven in the first game, not even Joel is shield from mistakes and malcalculations. He is just a man, just like Tommy.

Also, you should forget the Joel you encounter in the beginning of TLOU1, that Joel is dead... and you not need TLOU part 2 to see it...

Funny thing is you keep using the word "dumb them down", while I see "humanize them"... I guess you prefer the older Joel, I prefer this one.

4. Let me take a look at your words before: "Maybe you've never had someone whom you've had to care for so completely..."

Try to rationalize when someone you love may be in danger. She knows that something is wrong and Joel and Tommy are missed. She acts in a rush, as almost anyone would react. She is overthrown by a group of people who also is battle capable. But this is a very pity debate, this is a narrative choice to purposely set events in march. Abby also is a powerhouse, but a group of slavers are able to restrain her... its a story defining specific events... it happens in all, and I mean all stories...

5. A problem? LOL... Its the most important theme of the game, evolution into a better human beings. When everything is at its worse we embrace the darkness or try to find the light. Owen is Abby´s light even before her father death, more after it... and when he is gone Lev took his place. Both help Abby to find her humanity, the so called light in the darkness...

I have a sense that for you all that matters is survivalism... but if you are only fighting for being alive you are not living... Owen decided to change his course into a better existence, as the game shows you he is a good person, her goal was never to kill other people or to dominate certain zones, his core reason is Abby. You should pay a bit more attention to Joel´s dead sequence from Abby group perspective. Its a totally different dialogue sequence.

6. The only difference is that you see every action as if there can be no mistakes or wrong doings, I see humans for what they are, humans. Do you believe that any of that group would think for a minute that anyone would attack (or be able to attack) the WLF? But hey, if that is enough for you to stop enjoying the game, thats fair, to me it was an irrelevant thing, same would go for an accent or other minor clue...

7. First thing first, I already told you that Mel in the battlefront is the only grip I have with the narrative. It makes little to no sense for her to go on that voyage. Being part of the group or not, being jealousy about Owen and Abby or not, she should have been left behind in their home. Its not a narrative game breaking, but is clearly a stupid choice. But damn... one problem so far... you can choose any game and I can find ten times more mistakes...

When Mel is facing Ellie she could have used her pregnancy as an advantage, but at the same time she was already prepared to solve the problem providing what Ellie wanted... Abby. The one who was not in the mood for that was Owen, he is the one who tries to stop Ellie and the one who sets in motion a sequence of events that leads to Mel death. After Ellie shot Owen, all Mel actions are based on raw emotion, not rational thinking. But lets face it... you already know that. You are now playing a game of "this happened" so "why did not they did this or that"... Again, tell me any game, any game you like ( and If I played that game I will use the same logic you are using right now... lets see how it goes)...

8. Well... if that is what you think she deserves what can I say? Personal tastes are just that... The games show us Abby suffering the same ritual we saw other people suffering while playing as Ellie. It just makes sense, obviously they could do many things differently, but again, you can use that same logic to any game, story, or narrative decision. Why go left and not right, why jump and not crawl...

9. They were there to kill Joel, that was the goal of their trip. Owen knows what Joel is to Abby, the obsession behind it. Abby is not how it is for "reasons"... she becomes a monster in order to kill another monster. Her only goal in life is Joel... and Owen knows it, better than anyone else.

Owen tries to stop Abby before the trip (hope you didnt miss that bit), and it was a lost attempt. Joel destiny was set in stone, but he was able to save Ellie and Tommy. Now is up to you... you may choose to focus on Joel and everything else becomes irrelevant, or you see the bigger picture and realize that he saved the only ones he would ever be able to save. There is nothing that Joel could do to change Abby mind. At least not at that moment in time. In the same line that no one would save Abby from Ellie in Ellie's first journey. Abby only reaches a turning point after Joel's death, Ellie reaches the turning point in the space time between the farm scene and the last fight.

Oh... And Abby is not David, she is not the "villain", that is your biggest mistake so far, if you want to compare Abby to someone the person who fits better is... yes, you know it... Joel...

10. LOL...Do you know why I´m not "defeating my own point"? Because as explained before, the most important thing is not the face off, its the moment in time. I told you before, if the Ellie who encounters Abby in the pole is the Ellie after Joel's death (her first journey) Abby would die in that pole. But is not the same Ellie. I can only speculate how Abby would act if she faced Joel in the end of the game with Lev at her side, but it could have been different. Who knows right?

"They have her spin on a dime mentally so many times it's just not realistic."

Actually no... Ellie has two journeys, two very different journeys. The first is about revenge, she is filled with hate, anger, pain, desire for blood and "justice"... In her second journey, you have the shield of revenge again, but it has nothing to do with revenge. This time Ellie is filled with pain, sorrow, guilt, fear and despair... she doesn't wants Abby, she wants to be able to live again, and in her mind only killing Abby would solve her problem... obviously, that's not the case, and she faces reality before killing Abby for real.

"The first game had complex characters who were thoughtful and had clear motivations."

Yes... The first game is way more linear in the storytelling, and the characters while complex, way more simple to understand.

"This game has characters that make eminently ridiculous decisions..."

Besides Mel in the battlefront, all makes perfect sense.

"There is very little character depth..."

On the contrary, the character depth is the essence of this game. The only difference is that you need to see beyond the darkness of the soul of both main characters. The humanity behind every minor word or stare... The problem is... this time humanity is not one side exclusivity...

"Ellie could have still killed Abby and saved Lev, there was nothing precluding this fact, so that point is moot at best."

You mean like what Abby did when killing Joel and allowing Ellie to live? Do you sense the irony in here?

"If Ellie was at the point of forgiving Abby..."

This is open to interpretation, but personally I believe that Ellie never forgave Abby...

"That is far different than what Joel did to Abby's father, and is much worse in my estimation."

I get you, losing Joel was sad and painful... but you are wrong, to Abby it was far worse what Joel did to her father... and you know why? Because it was her father. What you think is irrelevant, her actions are based on her trauma, and thats the only way to judge her actions. Abby was a monster created by Joel, and no matter what I or you believe about Joel actions changes that fact.

So... Again, besides Mel in the battlefront I can justify from a narrative perspective all narrative decisions. The biggest difference between our perspective is interpretation, my interpretation of events leads me into a road that perfectly achieves its end with Ellie last decision. Your interpretation leads you in a different path that make all evens that happens next not logical to you...

That's why I feel so comfortable defending this game, because as you, I "have thought long and hard on this game", and every bit hits the target.

@blindbsnake: Thank you for replying this so I didn't have to. You explained it perfectly. Judging from his past comments, he clearly is sensitive to there being LGBT communities getting representation in games. He will try to poke holes wherever he can to feel justified in his argument.

@taylorspace: Agree to disagree. See my new response to blindbsnake for just a few of the reasons why I disagree if you want.

At least they're not waiting as long as Stranger Things.
