The Last Of Us Writer Expecting "Furor" Over Season 2

"We don't operate to either make people happy on social media or avoid making them upset."

The writer and showrunner of HBO's The Last of Us TV series has said he expects fans to revolt over what happens in Season 2. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Craig Mazin said of Season 2, "Will there be furor? Yeah, probably. I mean, there usually is, starting even with casting."

This is nothing new. Mazin said people had a lot of negative things to say about Bella Ramsey being cast as Ellie in The Last of Us, as an example. "We knew they were the exact right person to cast and they had to go through quite a few months of people being awful on social media until they saw what we saw," he said.

For Season 2 of The Last of Us, Mazin said there will be plot points that "shock people." And similar to Season 1, there will be storylines in the show that were not in the game.

"I'm never gonna say there are things that are gonna happen in the show that happened in the game. You never know what we're gonna do," Mazin said. "But I will say that it is the adventure, the journey is the point. There are things that will shock people, things that were in the game, things that were not in the game, and that's okay. As long as they're purposeful, they're not there to just simply shock. We are not interested in creating social media fear. We just want to tell the story the way we think it should be told."

Season 2 is expected to adapt at least some of the events of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us: Part II, and that means the character Abby might show up. There is also a major character death in the sequel, which seems like it could show up in the second season of the show. As Mazin is alluding to, fans of the game series were very vocal about the events of the sequel. The developers and voice actors who worked on the game received death threats over The Last of Us: Part II.

Regarding fan feedback in general, Mazin said he is only trying to do what is right for the story, even if people don't like it.

"We don't operate to either make people happy on social media or avoid making them upset. We just do what we think is right, and we hope that people come along for the ride and enjoy it," he said.

Production on Season 2 of The Last of Us is expected to take longer than expected given the ongoing writers' strike and the impending actors' strike. Season 2 was planned for release in 2025 prior to the start of the writers' strike, and there is no telling how lengthy the delay could be.

As for Mazin, he was at one point attached as a writer on Lionsgate's Borderlands movie, but he is no long involved with the project. Naughty Dog's game series, meanwhile, is pushing ahead with a new single-player game, while the planned Last of Us multiplayer project is getting scaled back.

Booo! I want another TV show about rich straight white people and their alcoholism!

/s

Thank goodness they aren't caving to the bigots. We've seen now what they'll do when given an inch. Never again.

No, sorry. Two things that kept the series from being epic in my mind. The choice of Bella Ramsey. She acts like an annoying snotty kid who looks nothing like Ellie and doesn’t even have the same personality. It feels like they didn’t bother to find an Ellie, they simply took this girl and said she’ll be in the role. Second, I think the TV show writers forgot that it was about escaping clickers and the brethren, and there wasn’t nearly enough scenes combatting them. But overall, I thought it was quite a successful adaption as I played the game alongside the movie and noticed just how many of the settings and character actions were painstakingly recreated. Probably the best game to live action transition we’ve ever seen.

If it's like the game's part 2 is, that's not surprising. I never finished part 2, but need to. People need to respect the creators. It's their story, not ours.

"Expecting "Furor""

No, you should expect drama, bigotry, homophobia and big doses of people not knowing what they are talking about. That will happen before the series release, and surprisingly also before the series release.

I say surprisingly because you would expect for that people to study the thing they are criticizing in order to do it from a fair perspective, but as we see from the games reaction, that not always happen.

Always love a dose of fanboy man-periods when a narrative doesn't align with how it 'should have played out' in their heads.

I hated the story of the second game just as much as loved the story of the first one. And yes, TV Ellie is too fat - first off all, she wouldn't survive a zombie apocalypse as she's out of shape, second, in a zombie apocalypse how are you going to be overweight - food would be scarce! Otherwise I liked the show.

@dmblum1799:

"how are you going to be overweight - food would be scarce!"

Part of the theme of the game/show is how, now human numbers have dwindled, wildlife has re-taken the streets. There are more animals about than ever. Plenty of food if you can hunt. As is evident by the overflowing Butchers shop in Jackson. There's even some exotic meats out there like Zebra, Giraffe & Monkeys :)

Oh so then we can expect it to be just like the games.

It will be awful, critics will say they love it because they can't risk those early screenings, fanboys will prop up critic scores as proof it was good while genuine fans will be upset that the awful ending was the one that got chosen, later learning it was a choice made late in production and not genuinely planned for early on.

@epic_poke8: What is a “genuine fan”? Fans can disagree without losing their status of being “genuine.”

@epic_poke8: "while genuine fans will be upset"

I love the perspective of genuine and fans in the same statement... It shows determination.

Then you enter a debate with the not so genuine fans and get easily destroyed... its an irony world...

@epic_poke8: don't forget the two part trans acceptance arc that makesnthe rest ofnthe game seem less stupid in comparison. That'll be fun.

Well if they follow the script of the second game, then DUH! OF COURSE there will be "Furor". As there should be as it was a terrible plot direction to go in the first place.

@eastland: Lol, I stopped at 5. Doubt I’ll get back to it. I love the first game but for some reason the TV adaptation just doesn’t do it for me

@ThePlantain: lacked the power of the game for me also, I was somewhat disappointed they weren't able to take the emotions I felt when playing the game and amplify them in live action, instead it felt a bit watered down. I wanted more grit and tension. There were some stand out moments, but they were few, likewise there were some terrible unnecessary moments.
