The Lord Of The Rings: Rings Of Power Won't Be Influenced By Modern-Day Politics, Showrunner Says

The show aspires to be "timeless" like the original books.

In a recent interview, one of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power's showrunners touched on rumors regarding the show's politics.

Some rumors have been growing recently that The Rings of Power will be affected by modern politics, but speaking to Total Film (via GamesRadar) co-showrunner Patrick McKay denied that this is the case, saying the show aspires "to being timeless," comparing it to the original works from JRR Tolkein.

"This was one of Tolkien's debate points with C.S. Lewis, his friend and colleague," said McKay. "It was very important that what he was creating was not an allegory. He was not commenting on historical events of his time or another time. He was not trying to transmit a message that spoke to contemporary politics. He wanted to create a mythos that was timeless, and would be applicable--that was his word, 'applicable'--the applicability across times."

McKay goes on to explain that every choice the team has made regarding the show is to "be faithful to that aspiration," as they don't want to adapt the material in a way that might make it feel dated. "We aspire to being timeless. That’s why these books still speak to people so much, because so much of what’s in them has not aged a day. And we aspire to do the same thing."

The co-showrunner believes that when viewers see the show, and the stories and characters in context, "they'll feel the same way."

McKay also touched on how the timeline of events compared to the original works has been condensed, noting that humans would die between episodes due to their comparatively much shorter lifespans. Apparently a non-linear version of the series was up for consideration, but McKay explained that this might have prevented viewers from emotionally investing in the series.

We were given another look at the show with a new trailer from San Diego Comic-Con, which GameSpot has broken down for you so you don't miss out on any juicy details. Rings of Power is set to stream on Amazon Prime, with a planned release date of September 2.

Previously various showrunners said they were incorporating modern politics. Now a showrunner is saying they aren't incorporating modern politics. Which showrunner is a liar?

"Sophia Nomvete says her character in the upcoming Lord Of The Rings series is “the face of a necessary redress of balance” within the entertainment industry. She continued: “This is a reflection of the world we live in, there are many and we are different and we will embrace and discover, and peel back, and learn, and educate, and be educated."

@epic_poke8: I'll just drop this here: “Part of the story we’re trying to tell is you have people of different races coming together to defeat a common enemy,” she explained. “You’re trying to look at this through a modern lens and the world is global and people now expect to see this kind of world globally represented.”

Notice the modern lens comment? Yeah, it will have modern day politics.

Didn't one of the actresses on the show just say the opposite a day or two ago?
