The Mandalorian Season 2 Delivers Huge Surprise Star Wars Cameo

The Mandalorian Season 2 has arrived on Disney+ and already a major Star Wars character has appeared.

There were reports that it would be happening sometime in The Mandalorian Season 2, but we didn't expect it so quickly. A major character from the Star Wars franchise made a surprise appearance in the first episode of Season 2, "Chapter 9." That, of course, wasn't the only surprise of the night. In addition to a long list of Easter eggs and references that could be found throughout the episode, Twitter integrated a bit of Baby Yoda into its interface to celebrate the premiere.

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for the Season 2 premiere of The Mandalorian. If you've yet to watch the episode, stop reading now.

Now Playing: Baby Yoda's Best Moments In The Mandalorian

Early on in "Chapter 9," Mando (Pedro Pascal) meets Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant), the marshal of Mos Pelgo on Tatooine. Vanth is wearing Mandalorian armor that looks suspiciously exactly like Boba Fett's and reveals he traded for it with a group of Jawas. How the Jawas got it remains a mystery, but regardless, the Boba Fett-related surprises weren't done yet.

So, is that Boba Fett?

In the final scene of the episode, actor Temuera Morrison, who played Jango Fett in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, could be seen looking down on Mando as he traveled back to his ship carrying the Boba Fett armor. Given that Boba Fett was a clone of Jango and where in the timeline this show is set (after Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, of course), the only reasonable conclusion is that this man is Boba Fett (since Jango was killed by Mace Windu).

It was previously reported back in May that Boba Fett would appear in Season 2 of The Mandalorian, with Morrison taking on the role. The show wasted no time in getting to his introduction, though. Now we just need to find out what he's been doing on Tatooine this whole time and how he came to lose his armor.

For those that don't remember, Boba Fett was last seen in Return of the Jedi when he was accidentally knocked off of Jabba the Hutt's barge by Han Solo (Harrison Ford), falling into a Sarlacc pit. And what a surprise, that happened on Tatooine. It certainly sounds like Boba Fett's been hiding out on the planet ever since.

Hopefully, this is far from the last time we'll see Boba Fett on the new season of The Mandalorian. After all, if Mando is so set on attaining the help of other Mandalorians to get Baby Yoda home, why not start with one of the most iconic for fans?

New episodes of The Mandalorian stream Fridays on Disney+. To keep you busy until the next episode, take a look at our Season 1 refresher and our Season 2 wishlist.

There's a lot of people it could have been--old clone trooper, yet another clone of Jango, and so on--but c'mon let's be honest; it was Boba Fett.

Tatooine, mention of a Sarlacc, the armor...misleading the audience is generally done in subtler ways so if this was not Boba Fett that would be a borderline lie, far more than simple misleading lol.

I'm curious if they will incorporate the Legends lore where Boba Fett sort of mind-melded with the Sarlacc and tricked it. They implied that the Krait Dragon ate the Sarlacc but did not explcitly state that; entirely possible that Boba Fett escaped and killed the Sarlacc and the Krait Dragon was seen eating the remains.

Just me speculating.

I appreciated the cameo much more than the episode. While I'm a big Olyphant fan, this episode was a weak way to start a new season after a fairly strong and much-hyped first season. It did very little to advance the story, featured some cringeworthy dialogue with the woman and her maintenance droids (I forget her name), and otherwise, was a very basic story about a group of people going to kill a big worm. I was hoping for more.

@ProjektInsanity: I dont know, I did like how they had the town people working with the sand people. nice to see the sand people for more then target practice.

But I do see what you are saying about bad dialogue. it ruins a lot of shows for me.

@deth420: I agree that it was nice to see the Tusken Raiders as more than just spear-wielding props. That said, I'd have appreciated something a little more complex. There was a better way to do even this basic story. It all felt so "Star Wars lite." I know SW isn't always the most heavily dramatic stuff, but they could've handled it in a way where there was some more meaningful negotiation between the Tuskens and townsfolk. They could've also told the story in a way where I'd feel some impact when the townspeople and Tuskens were being slaughtered by this worm, instead of just "eh, get to the part where you kill it."

It worked well enough as a simple story. I guess I just wanted more. I've been spoiled by the likes of The Expanse, Peaky Blinders, and Better Call Saul. I guess I have to remember that The Mandalorian is supposed to appeal to a younger audience as well.

I know this, they had better not spend this whole next season STILL trying to deliver baby Yoda to where ever, for whatever! It will get old very fast if they do! They need to start getting to the point by the 3rd show.

@returnofthebrotha: I was so annoyed that the season started with a filler episode. I honestly kind of stopped paying attention for a while until they went off to fight the sandworm thing.

Hopefully the first scene of the first episode is the Mandalorian crushing the life out of baby Yoda in his fist for about 3 minutes.

You think the vagueness isn’t a spoiler but anyone with half a braincell would figure out who it is spoiling the surprise. What’s the point of these articles about a single plot point other than what five year olds do after seeing a show. Also this is a gaming site. I’m so done with this site.

@deth420: yea but kinda remind of when albert wesker had to be killed by a combination of volcano, mountain pieces falling on him and a bamload of missiles. and some people still kinda expect him to come back

like you need to put person in a mincemeat grinder and then eat the meat to stop someone from returning

not...that big a surprise, that character's casting was heavily publicized when they started filming, spoiling it. (and given its the same actor as the prequels, there isn't much mystery about their identity, even if the credits didn't name them explicitly)

Also...that character *probably* appeared in episode 5 of season 1, which took place on the same planet.

That's not how Fett died. He wasn't knocked off. He slammed into the side of the barge with a jet pack malfunction and rolled into the pit.

@so_hai: Han knocked him off first though. Han hit his jetpack on accident, causing it to malfunction which sent Boba Fett rocketing into the side of the barge, and then he fell in the pit.

The R5 is also the same one form A New Hope that has its regulator explode when Owen bought it from the Jawas. You can still see the leak and burn mark on the back of its “head”.

Boba Fett isn't a Mandalorian, though. Either was Jango. It was a big kerfuffle in the Mandalorian community, because Jango wasn't a legitimate Mando, he just took on the armor and refused to follow their "religion" and rules.

That was probably the best 50 minutes of Star Wars I have ever seen.

Some story arcs in SW Rebels and The Clone Wars might rival it in scope and story and "epicness", but as far as basic enjoyment I thought that was great.

@uninspiredcup: totally agree. But they are both awesome. But yeah....bane > fett.

Cad Bane would fit in better, too; The Mandalorian has a strong "space western" vibe to it and Bane is definitely a gunslinger trope.

According to Temuera Morrison's IMDB profile, he is indeed credited as "Boba Fett" in this Mandalorian episode.

When watching RotJ as a kid, I thought Boba Fett went out like a chump when he got knocked into the sarlacc pit, especially after being so awesome in ESB. So I've always liked the idea that he escaped somehow, given the tools at his disposal.

@ikcizokm: Given how powerful Mandalorian armour seems to be, it's reasonable to guess he just climbed or cut his way out before he could be digested.

@Barighm: the lore suggests sarlacc digestion takes a very long time, which supports that (as does mando being relatively unscathed by a similar event.

in the old EU fett was badly burned (acid) and his armor severely damaged, (as it seems to be in this episode) but he managed to shoot his way out a few hours later, before being picked up by Dengar, who nursed him back to health, assuming that having one of the galaxy's greatest killers in his debt would be worth the trouble.

this seems to be loosely following that, given how damaged the armor looked, and how scarred boba looked.

@Barighm: Plus he would have had a strong motivation. A Jedi killed his father. He hated the Jedi. He was probably relishing in the aftermath of Order 66, with the Jedi wiped out. Then, suddenly, decades later, he happens upon some random Jedi on Tattooine. He was probably furious and looking for some payback, but got interrupted when he fell into the sarlacc. If I were him, I'd stop at nothing to escape and go after that Jedi.

The only question was whether Tem Morrison (who was cast months ago) was going to be playing Boba Fett or Rex (given the latter is a clone of the former).

@che5ter666: Wait a minute, wouldn't they be the same age though?? Both the Clones and Boba are clones of Jengo aren't they? My Prequel/Cone Wars knowledge is a little rusty, but I thought that was how it worked.

@mdinger: boba was special, he was allowed to grow normally, rather than having the accelerated aging and conditioning of the clones.

This is why he's a kid in ep 2 (and clone wars) and the clones are all adults.

Actually this was not very "surprising" at all. The first worn out rule of expanded universe fanfiction going back decades is resurrect Boba Fett. We all knew it was going to happen in this series the moment they announced it was set after ROTJ.

@Rufus_the_rat: Are they going to do it as they did in SW Legends (non-canon), where Boba is eaten by the Sarlacc and escapes?

They did mention a dead sarlacc....they implied the Krait Dragon killed it, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's true. Could have been Boba :D

@suprsolider: Lucas cannot hear us over his gigantic stacks of money that HE CHOSE to dump his version of canon for.

So, no, the pink sparkle-Vader teamup with Ant-Man and Elsa, sponsored by ESPN and Gatorade is absolutely canon if Disney's money says it is.

...and we don't have to watch it nor like it, but it's fact.
