The Mandalorian's Gina Carano Will No Longer Be Part Of Star Wars

Lucasfilm has issued a statement condemning Carano after she compared political disagreements to Nazi Germany.

It's the end of the road for Cara Dune. The Mandalorian star Gina Carano will not return to the series--or the Star Wars Universe. Lucasfilm has released a statement announcing the actress and former MMA fighter is not currently employed at the company, and that there are no plans for her to return in the future. The statement comes after Carano made an Instagram post comparing the persecution of Jewish people in Nazi Germany to "hating someone for their political views." These are just the latest controversial social media posts she's made.

A statement by Lucasfilm was obtained by io9, reading: "Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable."

Carano's post about Nazi Germany caused the hashtag #FireGinaCarano to trend widely on Twitter. She later deleted the post, but screenshots of it continued to be shared online. The actress' controversies go back months, however, to before the premiere of The Mandalorian's second season, in which she featured prominently.

The actress has been accused of transphobia after mocking the practice of including pronouns in Twitter bios, and has also shared sentiments mocking mask-wearing and fueling COVID-denialism. The controversy was further fueled by tweets falsely suggesting voter fraud in the 2020 presidential elections.

"They have been looking for a reason to fire her for two months, and today was the final straw," said an insider source quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.

While not confirmed, Carano was expected to play a part in the upcoming Rangers of the New Republic Star Wars TV show, while other rumors suggested a Cara Dune-centric show was in the works before the actress' controversial November tweets.

I love how the "editorialized" follow-up to this story disabled comments. You post a story with editorial angle and make sure no one can respond to it. But then, editorializing is a rule against legitimate journalists.

@Sindred: I like how that "article" provides zero evidence of Carano being a bad employee.

@Sindred: It's to save the mods the headache of having to read through hundreds of comments of people being massive D-bags to each other and the staff.

Personally, I don't think most of the articles that have comments turned off are worth riling up the perpetually outraged portion of the user base over, but I am glad I don't have to read the comments for it.

You can always take it to the forums if you really want to talk about that article. Just keep in mind, the Code of Conduct applies there too.

@ ID0ntKn0w7 well I am a teacher and I do visit strip clubs so its comforting to hear you will have my back if I was every so stupid to post anything stripper related to my Facebook.

If I did such a thing however, I expect their to be consequences from my employer for upsetting their customers and I’d most likely be dismissed.

I would probably accept that and wouldn’t cry that I was being persecuted for my beliefs in worshipping strippers and practise of visiting legal strip clubs.

Free speech, free market and consequences for ones actions (personal responsibility I think it’s called).

she was super dumb.... when will people learn especially if their skin tone is on the lighter side of the spectrum... it is never a great idea to do general comparisons to slavery and the holocaust.. Those 2 topics almost always get you put in social time out... the sad part about it is that no one really cares what your politics are... You're an actor... just go act... be the best actor you can be so you can secure that bag. She was actually getting some recognition... she might be the female Rock one day.. now... she is just gonna be some one hit wonder that we forget about. I hope this doesn't happen. Wish her luck. Freedom of speech is not nor has it ever been free.

I find it interesting that Disney drew the line at what Carano said, but ended up re-hiring James Gunn and his paedo "jokes".

And I can see this from two lenses; one is political as Carono is conservative and Gunn is liberal. The other is monetary. Gunn would stand to generate much more moolah for Disney than Carrano.

@CyberEarth: Well, Gunn was obviously joking, as that was from his Tromaville days. Also, there was some serious digging to find them by someone with a partisan axe to grind. This was a recent comment, part of an escalation by the far right after the election.

@YukoAsho: Someone might have an axe to grind against Gunn, sure. But that's no excuse to say what he said... over 100 times. It kind of stops becoming a "joke" when it's repeated in many different forms.

@rikku45 haha cheers man, I’ll hold you to that :D

If she perhaps maybe come out and publicly apologised, it would have gone a long way and been harder for Disney to fire her. Only problem is it doesn’t sound like she is the kind of person to do that as she has doubled even tripled down on if you look at past comments.

The sad thing is we are all about acceptance and love and hugs etc yet aren’t willing to forgive people for messing up if they actually feel remorse for what they said.

@fatman98: Free speech means you are free to say whatever you want without government persecution, but it doesn't mean what you say are free of any social consequences. Americans really need to learn what free speech actually entails. It's completely legal for your employer to fire you for your speech.

@chaosbrigade: Well, since Americans are the only citizens who have free speech, perhaps everyone else needs to learn what it means. No other country has an analogue to the First Amendment.

You are truly an idiot if you think no other country in the world has free speech. Try say "bomb" in the JFK Airport or "I will shoot the president" in Washington DC and see where that free speech gets you :)

@chaosbrigade:

Yes, you are right. You have repercussions for saying what you say. But, the irony in this. Is things are said on the other side in the similar fashion, and nothing is done.

The day is getting closer, that these social media giants fall. Twitter and facebook (and all of their subsidiaries it buys up) have just become echo chambers for people to yell down people who disagree with their social ideologies.

And I am not just saying this is for the left. This is for the right as well. It has become a toxic culture where people just tap away at their keyboards on their phones or computers saying things they would NEVER say to another person if they were standing next to another. This is the very reason I never jumped into those platforms.

I never understood the need to have the urge for someone to read my every thought or action of the day. It then just spirals out of control and creates a world of narcissists.

No good has ever come from twitter. Facebook started out as a good concept, but slowly turned into this data farm for big tech.

I wish this was true. You can go on YouTube and see endless videos of people saying those things to other people, (and behaving completely uncivilized, even beyond just saying abhorrent things).

I keep telling myself that we're past due for a renaissance, I hope it comes soon.

Very hard to have any sympathy for her.

I'd imagine PR reps from Disney have been pleading with her for months to tone down the social media posts.

What a dummy!

If I were your kids kindergarten teacher and I went to strip clubs every night and posted this to my social media, would you the same people crying “cancel culture” defend my right to express myself without consequences from my employer (school) for upsetting their customers (parents)?

@Ryza82: you worked very hard to build this false equivalence. Since kindergarteners aren't on social media, who cares if this hypothetical teacher does what no one does and posts pictures from inside strip clubs (which they don't let you do)? Oh no, this same person who teaches my kid about the dinosaurs also is an adult and has an adult pastime. I bet they masturbate too!

I feel like the correct response from Disney would be something along the lines of; "Gina's views are her own and do not represent the views of Disney."

@ender707: If this had been the first time she'd riled up twitter against her they might have done that, but I gather this was the last in a string of posts that had angry people yelling at Disney. I have to assume that somebody at Disney reached out to Gina and was like, "You're making problems for us over here, chill with the political tweets." before they moved on to firing her. Either way though, Disney definitely seems like the kind of company that will not stand for anybody on their payroll damaging their image.

...unless your name is James Gunn. In which case, sure, make online comments about paedophilia (repeatedly). 'cuz that's always a laugh factory!

@CyberEarth: Wasn't he the guy they fired over several year old tweets? And then hired him back after he explained he'd matured since then and understood those tweets were in poor taste? I'm sure it also helped the internet largely sided with Gunn, and Disney firing him was actually what was hurting their image.

@mogan: Paula Deen was fired for comments she made 40 years ago that weren't even in writing. Go read what Gunn said. It wasn't just a few off-color comments, and they were incredibly graphic - so much so, that I would be immediately banned if I were to quote them here.

"I'm sure it also helped the internet largely sided with Gunn"

But that's rather my point. You have a mob mentality rather than an actual policy. Whichever way the weathervane blows...

@CyberEarth: That's what I mean by Disney seems like a company that is very willing to fire folks who hurt their image. They're a company that relies on mass appeal.

'Mob mentality' is also called 'appealing to your fans', depending on whether you agree with what the mob is saying or not. Disney's a business, they're just doing whatever they think has the highest return.

@mogan:But the issue with "mob mentality" is that there is no actual proof that the mob are even subscribers; much less that they would have actually harmed Disney financially. I can't really say one way or another, but it seems that it's a bit hypocritical of Disney to fire Carano while retaining Gunn.

It is possible that Gunn's apology is what allowed him to be re-hired; but I think it's deeper than that, and more to do with the financial motivations behind Gunn and not the "mob motivation". It's easy to appeal to a mob motivation when there's nothing to risk financially (as in Carano's case).

It reminds of what Blizzard said about removing their Real Money Auction House; their public-facing statements were that "we're doing FOR THE PLAYERS", but the reality is that they did it due to the IRS changing the laws on virtual currency. They literally shuttered the RMAH the day before the new IRS laws would be enforced in order to avoid being taxed.

So maybe I'm looking at things very cynically, but I believe money is the motivator. When it comes to "doing it for the people", all of those platitudes vaporize the second there's a deep financial interest. If Carano had been knee-deep in her own spin-off series, Disney would have been rather non-reactive or given her a slap on the wrist.

@CyberEarth: I really doubt Disney would risk harming one of their better received products by letting Gina go if they weren't pretty sure it was in their best interest. It's not hypocritical if they're doing this stuff entirely self-interestedly. Letting Gina go, best thing for Disney. Re-hiring Gunn, best thing for Disney. It's not about what those people said on social media, it's about the impact it had on Disney.

And you're right, money IS the motivator; that's been my whole point. How Disney spins it is just window dressing. If keeping Gina Carano on The Mandalorian was something Disney felt was better for them in the long run, I'm confident they'd have done that instead.

@mogan: The thing is that it would be "chill with the 'wrong' political tweets." It seems unfair that the rule is 'say what they say, say nothing, or get out." It would be different for me if she advocated violence, expressed hate speech, or actually did something like what recently happened with Cas from The Expanse.

@ender707: It'd be, "Chill with whatever you're saying that's causing us problems." The hashtag FireGinaCarano people weren't just yelling her on social media, they were yelling at Disney too. She represents Disney and she's making their customers mad at her and them. So yes, it very much IS, 'Don't say anything that causes our company problems, or you'll be fired.' That's pretty standard stuff with most employers.
