The Matrix Reboot Reportedly In The Works

[Update] The upcoming Matrix movie will be an expansion of the series, not a reboot.

[UPDATE] Screenwriter Zak Penn, who is reportedly in negotiations to write the new Matrix film, has spoken up on Twitter about plans for the upcoming film. He said that the film is not a reboot or remake. While he can't come right out and say that, at this point in time, he went on to mention films like Animatrix, as well as the growing X-Men Cinematic Universe with Deadpool and Logan. It seems as though the new Matrix film will be expanding the world instead of rebooting it.

Original story below.

Warner Bros. is reportedly planning a reboot of hit 1999 sci-fi movie The Matrix.

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros. is "in the early stages of developing a relaunch of The Matrix," with Zak Penn in talks to write a first draft. Penn previously co-wrote X-Men: The Last Stand's script and worked on the story of Avengers Assemble, among other projects.

Additionally, Michael B. Jordan (Fantastic Four, Creed, Black Panther) is being lined up to star in the reboot, though there is apparently a long way to go before anything is finalized. The Wachowskis, the siblings who wrote and directed the original and its sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, are not currently involved in the nascent project, though Warner Bros. reportedly want the directorial pair on board to some extent, even if it's just to give their blessings for the reboot to go ahead.

The original trilogy's producer, Joel Silver, is reportedly keen to be involved, but The Hollywood Reporter says Warner Bros. is wary of getting the Die Hard and Lethal Weapon producer on board because of his rumored strained relationship with the Wachowskis.

Representatives for Warner Bros., the Wachowskis, and Silver all declined to comment.

The Matrix was released in 1999 to universal acclaim, winning four Academy Awards and generating over $450 million at the worldwide box office. Reloaded and Revolutions received good and mixed reviews, respectively.

All three films starred Keanu Reeves as main protagonist Neo. Reeves was most recently seen in John Wick: Chapter 2, and while promoting that film he told Yahoo Movies that he'd be open to doing another Matrix film, but only if the Wachowskis were involved. "They would have to write it and direct it," he told the site. "And then we'd see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that'd be weird, but why not?"

However, it is reported that Warner Bros. wants a fresh start for the franchise and would therefore seek out a new director and star.

Classic Hollywood recycle old stories for guaranteed income. Never brave enough to try new things when it involves MONEY.

Does a timeless film need a reboot? In my opinion no. An expansion could be cool if animatrix wasn't enough. But as it sounds, this just another proof of how short on ideas Hollywood (if you can still call the hole that poops movies nowadays that) has come to be.

WB must be strapped for ideas if they really did intend to remake Matrix. And even kids today have seen the org. so it would be hard to remake Keanu´s and the Fish´s performance

If on the other hand it´s a movie in the matrix universe i'm surprised they waited this long. The movies was huge hits and for people who like the universe then it wouldn't be bad.

A reboot would make 0 sense. Its hard to remake something as great as the original and expect it to be better in this case. Now if they make a spin off or a continuation, that would be sweet. I would like to see a prequel done showing how the Matrix itself came about.

DEFINATELY don't want a prequel.

Matrix without "the one" would be like the Bible without Jesus!!!

I wouldn't want a reboot, but a prequel showing us how Trinity and Morpheus ended up in the Matrix and got their team together would be interesting. There are many directions they could take the series. A prequel would be the obvious choice to start though.

Glad to hear they're not actually going to reboot it. The sequels, well, they are what they are. (Brilliant fight scenes surrounded in pseudo-philosophical bollocks.) But the original, you don't mess with that. It'd be like someone rebooting the Bible.

@PlatinumPaladin: The Bible has been ReBooted so many times, that it cannot tell it's 1's from it's 0's, nor it's a's from it's z's.

I hope a matrix reboot isn't like "tomb raider reboot" because they totaly fucked the franchise, the new tomb raider is nothing like the originals and it's garbage......

The hell with a reboot, there is still unfinished business. Last I remember there were millions of trapped souls still in slavery being farmed to provide a power source for the vile evil machines. I say War against the machines. More than one machine city, more than one matrix and more than one Zion. The fighters of Zion are like the Freeman of Dune, millions of them awaiting the messiah that will lead them to freedom.

@tinmann840: So more Revolutions-level laser guns against tentacle monsters action?

I found the original ending pretty much perfect. Sure the way Matrix was restarted was kind of weird return to ground zero, but honestly sometimes closing eyes and living in a nice fantasy is better than trying to battle in apocalyptic doomed world. If one day someone will build the 1000 meter high cities, launch all the nukes around the world and AI has evolved to the point they are the dominant species it doesn't sound that bad idea to put on some VR goggles and just pretend life is good.

Actually wouldn't be too surprising if all the poor people of the world were offered some VR to cool them down.

Wachowski brothers. Dont walk on egg shells and dance around the subject by saying the wachowski "siblings". Just because they decided to chop their dicks off doesn't change the fact that they are men.

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: Are you saying that they were men and then one day they woke up with the mind, hormones, and body parts of women? Removing a man's penis and giving him fake tits doesn't make him a woman. And just because you "feel" like a woman doesn't make you a woman. You don't get to choose the gender you were born with.

@overachiever89: Sex is biological. Biology can be tampered with. In time they will manipulate unwanted genes, clone things and some scientist will probably turn a mouse into a rat. Even now if you "think like a woman" and take pills and surgeries pretty much the only manly thing left will be history records. Not that sex/gender is even 1/0 factor, some are Vin Diesel, some are Justin Timberlake and some are born with both junks.

If we take the biblical "What one was meant to be this shall forever be" mentality that's another topic.

So weird. Was JUST talking about this a couple weeks ago with a friend. Remember the PC games that released from the movies? They were actually pretty decent and fun. The Maxtrix animation and style never got old. However, fast forward 15 years and you've got modern tech, modern pcs and consoles. Could you imagine at how much better, bigger and more awesome the Matrix games would be today? With the tech available. Oh, my my my...

its pretty bad that we had to play The Matrix Trilogy game on PS2 and Xbox (which was an all around mediocre game at best) to get the true ending sequence of the 3rd movie.

I'm not too excited about this news.

Now that is what I was asking for so long, why they don't make a story and movie based on the Animatrix, Animatrix have lot of interesting stories in there.
