The Nintendo Switch Dock Is "Not the Main Console"

The main unit is instead the device with the LCD screen, Nintendo confirms.

Nintendo has finally revealed its new console, the Nintendo Switch, and now we know more about it. The company has confirmed that the console's "main unit" is the device that has the LCD screen and detachabe Joy-Con controllers, not the docking station.

"The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch," a Nintendo representative told IGN. "The main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen, which the two Joy-Con controllers can be attached to and detached from. The Nintendo Switch Dock has been created so that it is extremely easy to seamlessly switch from playing games on a TV to transition into a portable mode."

The principal function of the dock, then, is to output to the TV and charge and power the system.

This suggests that the dock does not contain any extra horsepower and that the at-home and on-the-go experiences that Nintendo Switch provides may be the same in terms of graphics. This is not confirmed however, and we still have many other unanswered questions.

In other news about the Nintendo Switch, it's been reported that the system's price and hardware specifications may not be revealed until 2017. The console itself, known previously as the Nintendo NX, launches in March 2017.

Framerates....... Will this thing be able to match the frame rates you get on a larger screen or will it be as perfect as the trailer presents itself?

I really do wonder about that.

What if.... This "Main Console" is only a port for a better graphics card only. Just hope there's no bottle necking issues.

It's a portable system, Extra large DS. Nintendo is no longer a console player, they may as well start producing software for sony and microsoft.

If this turns out to be nothing more than a DS that you can attach to a TV then it will be utterly useless for me.

Which it really seems like thats what it is. A wii handheld, or a DS main console.

If this thing cannot show a graphics increase over the WiiU, then I don't care if it can do 1080p 60fps.

@marctheheretic: I have seen people making that same comment but I don't understand how it can be the power of a PS4 when it's portable and battery powered. I can see how the resolution can be changed and maybe a few other simple elements when you switch from dock to portable, and I guess you could say it puts the thing into some kinda low power mode. But more complex graphical changes, I don't think will change. In addition the size alone makes it difficult to imagine PS4 level of performance even when docked.

People just deal with it!

The Nintendo Switch is the new Gameboy.

It will not or have the same specs as a ps4 or xbox1

I did hear that it will be something a la Playstation Vita, it will use an Nvidia Tegra ship.

The truth is that NINTENDO is done making a real console to compete with ps4/xbox1.

so disappointed ?

So Nintendo somehow figured out how to make a portable tablet that has the same graphical power as the upcoming 4k consoles and has multiple hour battery life.

Otherwise, what's the point?

@LaSepultura: So you're saying the previous consoles which WAS NOT 4K... sucked?

4K is a gimmick; like 3D. Electronic Companies such as Toshiba, HP, and others has been talking about about 6K's and 8K's now. Apple has been using 5K for a while now. But it's worthless to have 6K and 8K TV's if you're not above 70-inch TV's.

@LaSepultura: You can enjoy games if they arent in 4K lol.. If they make great games that you can play wherever you prefer whether thats on the couch on the big screen or on the train/plane etc. Thats a nice thing. I dont think this is going to be most peoples main gaming device. But it sounds like a very nice side choice

@LaSepultura: That is not true at all lol. 4K is such a minor percent of the populace right now its an afterthought. It really all comes down to sales. No one supported the Wii U after the first few months cause no one was buying it. If the Switch moves units developers will find a way to downscale it and put it on the platform. if there is money to be made they will make money, believe it. Thats business.

Even if the device had 0 3rd party support (which it wont) the fact that it will now provide the full library of nintendo games on one platform (aka 3ds and wii u) is enough for many to buy it. Nintendo has many great games a year the issue is they are fragmented on two platforms. Great games are stranted on 3DS etc. Now people can get those games and play it at home on the big screen. And not just 3DS games but bigger more abitious versions of those games.

Again, ill go back to the main point of interest for myself and i assume most. This wont be our main gaming device. Its a side thing that will probably be affordable (im sure 250-300) and will offer some great unique exclusive games and gaming experiences.

@MidnightDT: They didn't buy it because the WII U was advertised mostly on the internet. Most parents I've talked to didn't even realize that Nintendo even had a console out after the WII and or thought that the WII U game tablet controller was an add-on for the regular WII.

This console will not support WII U or 3DS physical games sadly and when asked Nintendo said they had nothing to say on the topic when it came to whether it would support backwards compatibility through digital means either.

@LaSepultura: How does that mean 0 multiplat games? The ps4 and Xbone will probably go another 5-7 years. Granted they are getting versions with hardware upgrades but no game will be restricted to only being playable in 4K. All future releases will still be compatible with vanilla versions of both consoles. Nintendo is still fine for at least the rest of this generation.

@nwawallace: This has a Tegra chip. That's a mobile processor used in phones and tablets. There's no way a company would code a game for a proper chip that's on the XB1/PS4 and a mobile GPU.

@LaSepultura: You've clearly not listened to a single thing devs have said about how easy it is to port their games to (What was then called) the NX. The dev kits nintendo made for the switch are apparently one of the most developer friendly kits. But you keep going on with your talk about nothing other then the chip and ignore the process nintendo has built for porting games to the console.

"You pretty much just drop in the code and you're good to go!"
Was just one of many quotes made from big companies.

@nwawallace: Dont worry about it. This guy is not the audience for this system. Hes a hardcore graphics/4K gaming person so he likely plays on PC mainly. Guys like that are not the target audience for this system. Fortunately for Nintendo the vast majority of gamers are not die hard graphics/4k/top end enthusiasts.

People who will be more than happy to sit down in the recliner after work/school and enjoy some (dreaded awful looking) 1080p Fire Emblem/Zelda/Pokemon etc and just relax.

Its yet to be seen how much powerfull the tech is built in the mobile unit.

Zelda looks like a big open world game with nice looking graphics...all in all,it has potential to play big games at adequate performance.

We have to see how good they run when 3rd party publishers release games the X1 and PS4 already have(Dark Souls 3,Skyrim).

As i said in a different article,i am not excited for the Switch as it hasnt the games i would like to play on it...at least from what i saw yet.

Super Metroid 2 or a game ala The Last Story is i want...i am not interested in Mario 3D or Mario Kart

This was confusing? Seemed clear enough in the trailer. If it was the dock, how would you transfer the game so quickly? It's basically the WiiU being built into the Gamepad.

Ummmm. A three minute video is still not enough for these freaking idiots to grow a damn brain cell and figure it out. They are so damn close minded and one sided that's it's crazy!

Did you not get it from the video? It's BOTH A MOBILE AND HOME CONSOLE.

"What is it doing?" Playing damn video games!

"How do they expect powerful hardware?...." That's your expectation NOT Nintendo's. They don't care about power they care about the games

"...why are they calling it a console...?" Because it is a HYBRID CONSOLE. It's a new concept I know...so hard for close minded people to understand...get used to the new concept.

@fig56: I dont get the logic of a lot of the idiots that comment on here either. These days people only think like fanboys instead of putting their thinking caps on. Regardless of what your favorite corporation(which is stupid roflmao) is its not gonna change the reality. People need to go by facts and not nonsense and rumor. Until theres facts about this system it doesnt matter what negative things they have to say on the thing. But one thing is clear. This is not the Wii but something else..

@IanNottinghamX: Some people's expectations are just out of wack is all. For some reason they think Nintendo is trying to compete with other consoles but the truth is they aren't(in respect to hardware). The software is what sells and Nintendo has the others beat by a mile.

@fig56: Though tbh I think the switch is gonna be powerful enough this time to get multiplats. Also it was mentioned by Nintendo and others referring to the Switch as a platform not a particular piece of hardware. I wouldnt be surprised if there will be different tiers of tablet that they sell that you can "Switch" with the base models tablet.

@IanNottinghamX: You know I never thought of that! That would pretty cool if they did offer upgrades for the tablet for the portability aspect but what about the home console upgrade? Maybe the base could be upgraded too? Idk?

Edit: I forgot that the tablet is the whole console. What does the base do? Charger?

@fig56: The Tablet is the console though. The Dock just charges and hooks up hdmi and controllers etc. Nvidia has started to let a little more info go about this thing too. Basically Nintendo and Nvidia signed a partnership for 20 years. So this goes past just the Switch. The Switch Cpu and Gpu were designed from scratch(custom Tegra yes but brand new Custom Tegra chips.) The Ceo of Nvidia says that he thinks people will be impressed by the Switch once they get their hands on it and experience it. This is why Im thinking this thing is on the powerful side this time.

I think there are two sides to the argument here.

Personally I don't understand how people can't understand the concept, the video they released did an exceptional job in demonstrating the console and its uses. Criticism in that regards is unwarranted.

I do however agree that 3rd party support will inherently be weak, because it's clearly not a console made in any manner near to how a PS4/Xbox One or PC will operate. Given it's a powerful handheld, it's likely that a lot of games on typical home based consoles will be far too powerful for it to run properly. And if it can, not for a very long period of time, which defeats the concept.

Ultimately Nintendo are covering a niche market. Those that lived through the glory days of Nintendo would love valid nostalgia, and we are all grown up now and likely in work, so I can understand their direction and idea. It's brilliant, but brilliantly pointless. We can't juggle these into our lives and those that can are going to look a bit weird on the bus playing on such a large handheld.

Saying that, if they can get Pokemon on the big TV, I'm in...
