The Office Is Netflix's Most Popular Show

"I don't think it's a secret; it is verifiably the number one show on Netflix right now."

The 2005-2013 workplace comedy The Office, an adaptation of Ricky Gervais' show of the name, is Netflix's No. 1 most popular show "by far." That's according to actor Brian Baumgartner, who said on a recent podcast that The Office is No. 1 by a huge margin.

"It's not even close," the Kevin Malone actor said on the Erik Anders Lang Show.

Now Playing: Best Netflix Releases Of June 2019: New Movies And Shows To Watch

He said The Office is more popular now than it was when it originally aired on NBC in the 2000s. The reason why The Office is so enduringly popular is because it's "subversive," according to Baumgartner. He said young people in particular respond to its kind of humor, especially Steve Carell's Michael Scott character who is known to make off-color jokes about race and sexual orientation.

"The show is bigger now than it was at the height of the show," Baumgartner said. "It's because it's subversive. It appeals to that younger demographic ... Some people who watched it when it came out, they're still watching it, or watching it with their kids. It just keeps repopulating because of young people."

"I don't think it's a secret; it is verifiably the number one show on Netflix right now which is the number one thing in the world," he added. "By the way, it's not close. I don't know how much really I am supposed to say. It's crazy."

Baumgartner is presumably talking about popularity by measure of viewership. He's also probably talking about popularity in the United States, as The Office isn't available on Netflix worldwide. In Australia, for example, The Office streams on Stan, not Netflix.

A revival of The Office is reportedly in the works, but Carrel is not going to be involved. The actor thinks it's a bad idea to bring back The Office because "the climate's different" in regards to the kinds of jokes people think are acceptable.

"Apart from the fact that I just don't think that’s a good idea [to bring back The Office], it might be impossible to do that show today and have people accept it the way it was accepted ten years ago," he said. "The climate's different. I mean, the whole idea of that character, Michael Scott, so much of it was predicated on inappropriate behavior."

NBC Universal owns The Office, and Netflix pays a licensing fee to have The Office on Netflix. The current contract to keep The Office on Netflix expires in 2021, according to The Wall Street Journal. At that time, or perhaps sooner, Netflix would have to pay NBC Universal to retain The Office, and another layer of complexity is that NBC is launching its own streaming service relatively soon.

Netflix's No. 2 show is believed to be Friends. Netflix reportedly paid $100 million to WarnerMedia to keep Friends on Netflix at least until the end of 2019.

Also on the podcast, Baumgartner talked about why The Office was the "worst possible show you could be on." Unlike other shows where actors come in, film their scenes, and leave, The Office kept each actor on set at the time time. He says he worked 12-14 hours per day to film one episode.

According to reports, the new version of The Office will feature a combination of returning cast members and newcomers, while a new boss is reportedly coming in to take over for Michael Scott. Once again, it would take place at Dunder Mifflin's office in Scranton, PA.

I loved The Office during its original run, but it's a been disheartening if it's still the most popular show on Netflix. I would imagine by this point those who were fans of the show have seen it already, including those who missed it during its original airing. I can't specifically say why it's disappointing to me.

As for the "why," the idea that it's because The Office is "subversive" or appeals to a "younger demographic" seems to reflect that Baumgartner might have a limited window into entertainment media or a somewhat skewed perspective. The Office is incredibly "safe" television. It follows a sitcom format with self contained episodes and the over-arching plots largely have to do with romances or in some cases love triangles. Nothing specifically wrong with that, but it's incredibly safe and digestible television, and in no way "subversive" or appealing to some youth counter culture as Baumgartner may mistakenly believe.

The show is simply hilarious, and more importantly, infinitely watchable. You can pop on almost any episode randomly and it's just great.

I enjoyed the office several times end to end. I would be happy if they made another show with the same format, i think they could do something cool using a similiar formula. But dont try to bring back The office

This has a lot to do with banner/title/tile positioning. It's the same way things work on Pandora and other trend-oriented algorithms: The more popular something is, the more popular it becomes, because it moves to the first screen or two.

Only "curated" (i.e., promoted) titles move above those.

Netflix famously does NOT reveal streaming viewership numbers.

The headline here should not be about the show's popularity, but that Netflix supposedly decided to share streaming statistics with the guy that played Kevin on The Office (which I doubt...).

I would have thought Friends would have been the No. 1 show. Solely for all the basic white chicks playing it on loop.

@sircolby45: Yeah pretty much. I myself go back and watch The Office on Netflix regularly especially when there's nothing else interesting to watch. Its still funny to this day but I can imagine people complaining about all sorts of bs just off the first season alone.

The Office is #1 on Netflix. That's a great reason to never make any more episodes. /s

The Office is a rewatchable show that why its so popular. Its not as good as say, Breaking Bad, but i've seen every the office episode 3-5 times. Some shows are just better that way, especially when you don't have to watch the episodes in order. Btw my most watched show on netflix is Rick and Morty. Yes you can watch it here in Sweden, i know its not on US netflix as i use VPN a lot to watch shows like planet earth and cosmos, which is not on the Swedish netflix for some reason.

It was awful without Steve. It'll be worse now than back then. Don't.

@srfilk86: Solid opinion but I wouldn't say it was awful, but Michael was an integral part of the show. Luckily the characters still left in play had enough chemistry to pump out two more decent seasons. Of course the ratings went down but they were still good. I personally would not want to see an Office without Michael Scott... but that doesn't take away from Jim, Pam, Dwight, Andy, Kevin, etc and all the life they brought into the show as well.

God help us if The Office is really the most popular show on Netflix. It’s doesn’t say a lot about the rest of their content or any shows that have been made in the last however long since The Office first aired.

Netflix has so many good shows. Perhaps people need to be a little more adventurous.

@el_swanno: It makes great background noise. We've seen it so much, we don't have to sit and watch. A lot of others have said they just have it running while they do other stuff.

Bring it back, but make the characters woke AF and anti Trump.

@southsouthsac: Yeah if they had to rehash the show it would have to be completely different and fitting for the time. Satire on all this SJW and PC culture would be hilarious. Some have tapped into it (South Park, Key & Peele) but no one has really explored it like I think the Office would
