The Order, God Of War PSP Dev Hiring For New Franchise

Sorry, it's not The Order.

Ready at Dawn, the studio behind The Order: 1886 and the God of War PSP games, is staffing up in preparation for development on a new triple-A game. According to the announcement released on its Twitter, it's seeking a wide variety of positions across design, engineering, and programming.

The RAD careers page lists two separate projects these positions could be working on: continuing to support Lone Echo for its ongoing partnership with Oculus Rift, and "a new AAA third-person action console title, based on a brand new original IP."

Now Playing: God Of War DLC Plan Was "Too Ambitious" - GS News Update

The replies from fans to its tweet are largely hoping for a sequel to The Order, but the mention of an entirely new IP makes that unlikely. The Order: 1886 took place in a steampunk Victorian London and centered around the legendary Knights of the Round Table. While it got some credit for its world-building, reviews were mixed on GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

"It is, at best, perfectly playable, and lovely to look at and listen to," critic Kevin VanOrd said in GameSpot's review. "But it is also the face of mediocrity and missed opportunities. A bad game can make a case for itself. A boring one is harder to forgive."

Lone Echo, by comparison, was much better received. The virtual reality project was an Oculus exclusive, but it received generally positive reviews on Metacritic as a VR showpiece.

I hope they can get their pacing down better and make gameplay more interesting. Loved The Order's visuals and world but everything else was pretty lacking, hopefully they learned from their failure.

i want a sequel to the order, god damn it! forget the haters... the game was pretty good! yes, it had problems, but the foundation is there for a great sequel. also, a lot of the disappointment was the result of stupid expectations from the community which in itself was the result of poor marketing which overly emphasized the game as a gears of war clone in a new setting. in reality, it was a heavily narrative driven game oozing with atmosphere and incredible art direction. it would be hard to forgive sony if they dump this ip... hopefully the sequel will be an early ps5 release.

@Xristophoros: There was sort of a weird hate band wagon before it even released with influencers and channels putting up videos like "why The Order 1886 is going to suck". To this day I think the game still has some of the best graphics on PS4, it had various problems such as the black bars, a poor over the shoulder angle, no puzzles to make linear levels more interesting and QTE boss fights however if they changed/fixed these problems I think a sequel would be a lot better. More mythical creature fights/encounters would also help improve the experience... Plus a werewolf vs vampires multiplayer mode would be pretty cool.

@gamingdevil800: i agree. in terms of art direction and graphics, i think the order is easily in the top 3 of the generation, if not of all time. yes, the boss fights were among its weakest aspects. i did not mind the linear design, though, since that is a staple of most fps games. they needed more gunplay scenarios, no doubt, and an extra 4 hours of "gameplay" time... other than that, i was quite pleased with the game and would rate it a solid 7 with a ton of potential for an excellent sequel. to this day, i think the order is the most unfairly criticized game of the generation. you are right, people wanted to hate the game before it was even released and hate the game they did. i can see why sony would want to distance itself from the series for a while because of the vile community, but i think 5 years is enough time to announce a sequel. only time will tell.

@Xristophoros: It was very cinematic too in terms of the seem less flow from cutscene to gameplay and gameplay to cutscene. Something three years later a lot of games still don't seem to do with some exceptions like God Of War, RDR2 etc.

@Xristophoros: I'd give it a 6. Like, a real 6/fair, not an internet 6=unplayable trash. Graphics were good, world was interesting; but your interaction with that world was way too limited. Tools and weapons were rad; but their use was so limited it wasn't even funny. Just a handful of moments when you were programmed to use a given gadget and that's it. Not even enough to "learn" or enjoy the mechanic it entailed. Way too prebaked. Lastly, I *think* the story was interesting? But it was told abruptly and so it lacked either the "emergent story" of something like TW3 or the very clear cinematic experience of e.g., UC4. And so I didn't get to care about the characters and... sort of followed what was going on well enough but then it was suddenly over.

A game of missed opportunities in my mind. It's for this reason that I agree with you - a sequel would be awesome because it would give them the chance to expand on these ideas and show us some of the depth we wanted from that world

@xantufrog: i agree with everything you said, although i would rate it a 7. it is probably the best 7 i have ever played, though. if people went into the game expecting it to be a narrative driven experience, first and foremost, i think a lot of the negativity would have been reduced. to this day, i think the order is the most unfairly criticized game of the generation. maybe of all time? despite all of its faults, none of them are deal breakers in my opinion. also, i have yet to find a AAA game, other than uncharted 4 or god of war, that is as polished as the order -- as in, i did not encounter a single bug or dip in performance at any time. the game runs like butter. seriously, all they had to do was add a few more encounters and gameplay scenarios and extend the length by about 4 hours or so. would have been a classic. ah, well, it is still a classic in my eyes :D

"a new AAA third-person action console title, based on a brand new original IP."

I dunno that wording kinda makes it sound like it could still be a sequel to The Order like they aren't going to flat out say it's a sequel to The Order 1886 and it's still technically a pretty new ip. I would like to see a sequel to improve on the previous games faults like it still sold well enough to justify one.
