The Outer Worlds Sells 2 Million Units, Take-Two Talks Subscription Model

2 million sales and counting.

Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian's new RPG, The Outer Worlds, has sold more than 2 million copies, parent publisher Take-Two announced during an earnings call this week.

The Outer Worlds also launched as a free game for Xbox Game Pass subscribers, but the 2 million sales figures is presumably referring to full-game sales across Xbox One, PS4, and PC. (A Nintendo Switch version is also on the way--more on that below.)

Now Playing: The Outer Worlds Switch Port Delayed Due To Coronavirus - GS News Update

On the subject of subscription services like Xbox Game Pass, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said it's an ongoing conversation at the company regarding how much the company will support programs like Xbox Game Pass and others. He said that, as a general rule, Take-Two simply wants to release games where the consumer is, and that could include subscription libraries.

At the same time, Zelnick said subscription services might be better suited for older titles as a way to give them a second lease on life. "We think subscription offerings are probably better suited to catalog but we're willing to take experimental chances when it makes sense. It's early days for all these platforms," he said.

Take-Two's biggest game, Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V, launched on Xbox Game Pass in January. The game recently crossed 120 million in sales, and it's reaching even more players now that it's free with Game Pass.

The Outer Worlds is a unique game from a development and publishing perspective. The title was announced in 2017 as one of the first titles to be published by Take-Two's indie label, Private Division. In November 2018, Microsoft acquired Obsidian, but due to the previous arrangement, Private Division remained attached as publisher of The Outer Worlds.

Going forward, however, Microsoft will seemingly publish the Outer Worlds franchise if there are indeed any sequels or franchise extensions. Microsoft's Matt Booty said he sees The Outer Worlds as an "enduring franchise" for Microsoft, so you can expect more instalments.

In other news about The Outer Worlds, Private Division has delayed the Nintendo Switch version due to the Coronavirus outbreak. The port is being developed by Virtuos, which is headquartered in Singapore and has offices across different cities in China. Private Division has also confirmed that it will release the game on a physical cartridge as well as digitally. Prior to this delay, physical copies of the game were set to simply include a download code.

The game was proclaimed as the Fallout killer before release. You're going to have to sell a hell of a lot more than 2 milllion copies if you even want to think about Fallout.

it's a good game, especially when its humor hits (it definitely did for me), but the pacing was very off for me. i'm usually more into gameplay-focused titles but i don't mind a good story every once in a while. this game had too much talking for me though. the first time i got to the groundbreaker i later realized i spend 4 hours there without doing anything besides talking. this naturally led to me starting to skip dialogue because i wanted more action, which really hurts a bit considering how well written most of the dialogues are. i really wanted to like it more than i eventually did.

I didn't enjoy this game as much (been there, done that), until I started acquiring a full party and meeting even more dastardly NPCs.

It's what I keep saying all the time: besides gameplay,"story" in these single-player games don't matter. The other literary elements (narrative/plot, etc.), especially CHARACTERS, are what really sell the "story" and suck you in, immersively. A good story (plot, really) cannot save a boring cast and stale gameplay; although excellent gameplay, including how one controls the plot choices and char development, can save a rote plot.

@ButDuuude: a game where you can get virtual blow jobs and cruise for 2011-GPU-tech hookers will attract a lot of simpletons and low IQ players, why else you think they included that lowlife crap in a video game to begin with? If Outer Worlds had hookers and titty bars too it would have sold twice as much, some devs have morals, others don't.

@willywill: it offers a mix of all kinds of arcade activities, we know that already, then again, adding all that extra crap gets the masses. Ever heard of youtube clickbaits? Each pic with extra-flesh has a shit load of extra clicks. No different in game. No need to feel insulted if you didn't choose to play the game for that reason, but plenty others do and especially 12 year olds that can live their pre-teenage fantasies on a PC screen.

Loved New Vegas. Unlocked every achievement. Couldn’t wait to play this, especially after all the glowing reviews.

Played about halfway through and stopped. Thought it was boring and no where near the level of new Vegas.

@doodoflife: Outer World was good, but just too much blablabla and most the characters looked like clones. I kept falling asleep after a few hours into the game, I did not even pay attention anymore to dialogue and just clicked through them.

Nevertheless, Vegas had action, much more to do and variation, and the voice acting was never too long and always enjoyable, so this was obviously just a prototype to see where it leads, and it was a major success, so expect the next game to be much better, they'll know.

@doodoflife: Loved Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I didn't even make it as far as you did in Outer Worlds. Every part of what I played felt like an inferior attempt at a New Vegas style of game. I didn't feel like wasting another second on Outer Worlds and decided I'd rather play New Vegas again instead.

@AvIdGaMeR444: - To me it felt like a really, really scaled down part of FNV. They didn't have the budget of a FNV, and the game was good imo, but they never should have marketed this as a FNV spiritual successor like they did.

@AvIdGaMeR444: Same as you 2. FO3 is still my favourite game ever, also loved FNV and FO4 and was really looking forward to OW...and started it with a huge sense of excitement...but that waned. I probably put in about 30 hours or so, but that was about it. Compare that to about 300 hours I played FO3.

It just didn't click with me.

I think he should think again because if gamepads didn't exist then I would have definitely bought the game on PC... After the epic exclusive period anyways..

Literally the only reason I didn't buy it day one (well aside from epic) is that it was on gamepass. If Red Dead 2 was on gamepass for PC I wouldn't have bought that either.

If they take Outer World's off gamepass at some point then when it appears for sale on steam or windows store I'll buy it but otherwise I'm perfectly content as is.

Plus because I used Xbox rewards to get my xbl gold prepaid until December 2022 that means I also have gamepass free until December 2022. Any free months I earned after signing up for gamepass only get me a discount after that. So I've saved a ton of money and literally haven't had to pay a dime for xbl gold in the last 4 years and I still have 2 years to go before I have to start paying for gamepass.

Nothing on Gamepass is free, that anti-consumer service is going to cost all of us a lot in the long run if the blind fanboys don't let it go now.

@reznik00: I love it. For instance, I did not go with Gears 5 hype train at all (am a Gears 1-3 guy), so after encountering too many bugs and simplified gameplay, I gave it the quits, and did not even lose 1$.

@reznik00:

Game Pass tracks the behavior of the users like how Steam does and with that intel companies have a better understanding of what is popular and what sells, video games have become a very expensive business.

Companies need to be profitable and thanks to pirating and resellers like GameStop game companies need to create new ways to create revenue so you can’t say it is 100% the fault of the companies how video games came to be the way they are.

Competition is a good thing and nothing is stopping Steam from giving publishers and developers better deals than the competition except greed and the monopoly the game store has created.

@reznik00: it’s a practice known in economics as dumping. You sell a product at a loss in order to hurt the competition and attract consumers to your company. Once said company create a large enough consumer base, prices go back to normal.

Microsoft can deny all they want, but it’s really obvious what they are doing.

@reznik00: You are right Game Pass and even PSN is not free and as long as you keep the subscription up to date the games are free to play. Also the games in this program are not permanent as they may be taken out down the road. Even with that I value the service as I get to test drive the games before I decide to buy them and I like that versus me buying it outright never got an chance to see how it plays. This method is better than any review because you have to trust the reviewer's review is not biased or incorrect and when you pay you get no refund.

This has nothing to do with being an fan boy and as pointed out if you are PS fan you have PSN that does the same. One other thing that is an bonus after awhile the games in Game Pass are sold at discount to it's subscribers 20% for game and 10% for add on. There is no blindness there as I save money as well. I am an subscriber to PSN and Game Pass and been for some time and in that long run It has not hurt me.

@reznik00: in what way? Gamepass is entirely optional for 3rd party developers so if you see one on there then they wanted to be on there.many smaller companies praise gamepass as so many people who wouldn't ushaly play there games try them out and become fans. Im sure i read they are paid per play much like Netflix. Can i ask why you seem to think its so terrible? Because for me personally gamepass is the greatest thing to come out of this generation as the only game i paid for in 2019 was fallen order so it works great for me.

@walbo: In the long run, the quality of games will suffer and be even more aggressive with microtransactions to make up for production costs that cannot be recouped in a $10 subscription service. Maybe that’s what he is talking about.

@gustavob: but that makes no sense as its only ms first party games that release day one or indies that need exposure. All other third party games are put on the service months after there initial sales so its a great way of gaining more cash especially if the initial sales weren't great and devs know this or they wouldn't choose to use the service man lol.

@walbo: would you buy a game full price at launch if you knew it is coming to the service you already pay in a few months?

As you can see in comments everywhere, many gamepass users simply don’t buy games anymore.

I believe this model is destined to fail and that it wasn’t designed to last for a long time anyway.

Completed the game recently. Overall it's a 7/10. I wonder why the team didn't decide to go all out and make the world size comparable to that of Fallout? The world in The Outer Worlds just felt too compact. The settlement towns felt a little bland and small as well. It seemed a lot of potential was not taken advantage of in this game. The team could've done so much more with it but instead took the simplified route.

@idakooz: it was more a test-run to check reactions of the public, I assume they expected it to be what you said (they're not dumb) but the results at the end were the opposite. Next game they'll make will be like you suggested, I mean, they're dumb otherwise. I don't think they're dumb at this point and M$ will give them full support.

@idakooz: To keep it out of development Hell.

They had a fully-finished engine, tools, and assets when they STARTED New Vegas, and (as I have to constantly remind folks) it was a broken quest shit-show with constant back-and-forth level loading when it shipped.

Outer Worlds was completely new on every level and a truly amazing start. They built a helluva lot of foundation for a brand new IP, new assets, new engine, etc.

...and it was shocklingly functional

@idakooz: The Outer Worlds was a smaller budget indie (sort of) project. Obsidian was working within the resources they had. Since they're owned by Microsoft now, I imagine any sequel will be more of a AAA project.
