The Outer Worlds for Nintendo Switch has been delayed due to the Coronavirus outbreak. The developer of the Switch port, Virtuos, is based in Singapore, with offices across China.

Publisher Private Division, which is owned by Take-Two, announced the delay today on Twitter as part of Take-Two's latest earnings report. The team at Virtuos is safe and healthy, but the office has been closed, so work has been halted on the project.

Private Division also confirmed that Outer Worlds for Switch will now ship on a physical cartridge and via digitally. Previously, the game was expected to be digital-only, with the physical version of the game containing a download code. Additionally, the first Outer Worlds Switch screenshots seemingly leaked just ahead of this news.

The Outer Worlds for Switch is now expected to launch during Take-Two's fiscal year 2021. That means the title will launch during the April 1, 2020-March 31, 202 period.

Take-Two's earnings call revealed that the game has already sold 2 million units, with Strauss Zelnick sharing some thoughts on subscription services like Xbox Game Pass.

"We don't want any Chinese people dying from the virus so this will cost a delay, so as compensation for the rest of the world we're gonna put the game on plastic chips that comes from China."

Wow, I wonder how bad it'll run on the Switch.

@zander80: Unless they worked some miracle I expect it to run badly.

@RogerioFM: Wouldn't be too sure, Hellblade actually runs pretty good for me.

Then again, I'm Gen X so, some of my earliest memories are sitting on my mom's lap "helping" her play Myst so I have happily played for many, many years games with issues far worse than what the Switch can do.

I mean it too, I still remember that "roll bar" after my mom clicked something in Myst while the screen slowly rendered. lol.

Granted, that slow would drive me cray-cray nowadays but, honestly, unless it's a fast paced shooter or a super quick platformer, I find slightly reduced whatever to be largely bearable for me.

I mean, I don't strictly need 60 FPS for an adventure game or to see the third hill in the distance in an RPG. Yes, they're nice to have but, so is a big production budget, but a lack of one certainly doesn't prevent me from enjoying a good indie either. (insert shrug here)

@dlist4ever:

Yeah, I know the struggle, I remember Prince of Persia was slow as hell playing on an old 386. Still, the problem with Outer Worlds, at least on a PC seems to be optimization, if they somehow can fix it on the switch I'm all for it, might even purchase it myself.

what!
Why is it not important to make products(& develop them)

in USA or wherever...If every other product wasn't "made in China" I wouldn't care nor notice...

Greed is in all of us. Just some more then others is the problem.

@sippio: Hooray for corporate capitalism! I remember in the 80s and 90s, when cubicle nerds were laughing about all the manufacturing jobs getting sent overseas, and how corporations could never do that to programming jobs.

Anyway, I'd rather see a videogame get delayed for a few weeks than risk people dying from the latest version of SARS.

@sippio: Most programming and developing are outsourced to foreign countries these days because they have lots of overqualified coders and they are willing to be paid less. And this practice will continue unless you are willing to pay $5-10 more per game so the developers can afford to hire more expensive programmers and coders in US. And most people aren't.

@Flyin3lvl: Arguable. Video games are still considered a very risky investment, you either win big or you lose lots.

Was it due to the quest in the first planet? Like, they thought it would be insensitive or something?

@RogerioFM: No, like it says in the article, the team doing the port has their office closed to keep the virus from spreading.

Not a huge delay or anything. And the fact that it is getting a physical release is very welcomed, and very smart.
