The PS5 Has Reportedly Been Jailbroken, Nearly Two Years After Launch

The new exploit is out in the wild, but is extremely limited and very unstable for now.

Piracy hasn't been as big a problem on Sony's recent PlayStation consoles, but it looks like someone has managed to crack the security on the PS5. The jailbreak was spotted by modder Lance McDonald--who modified Bloodborne to run at 60fps--and uploaded to Twitter, showcasing how the software can give a user access to the PS5's debug menu.

Additionally, a PS5 with the software installed can also have game backups installed on it, with McDonald's footage showing the delisted PT demo being loaded onto the system, although it wasn't playable on the system. The exploit does come with numerous limitations though, as its makers claim that it only works around 30% of the time and has multiple potential points of failure.

The exploit will only work on consoles with firmware version 4.03 from October 2021, and it is possible that PS5s with earlier firmware could run it according to the creator. The software in its current state won't be too useful to the ordinary gamer, as the creator of the exploit noted that hackers and people who are curious to see what's under the hood of the PS5 will find it worth installing.

Sony usually keeps a tight lid on any potential piracy and exploits of its consoles with regular firmware updates, and by comparison, Microsoft has seen its Xbox Series S find an audience with modders who have turned it into a powerful machine for emulated games.

Nintendo has a notable piracy problem, as emulators for the Switch are available online.

@locke90: A regular console that's not region locked still won't allow you to run mods and cheat in online games tho lol

@locke90: God I have not seen region locking since before the 7th gen. Not what sure you mean. I have modded a many console to unlock region locked games, but post 7th gen.... not seen it. Not sure as to digital, but nin cards are not region locked.. well save for China, that just has a lot of games blocked. Or if your talking about emulation, in some way.

@locke90: The PS5, as did the PS4, have no region locking for games. The same is true for the Xbox. Neither the One or the Series series (heh) are locked. For games.

I agree with most that piracy is not worth it in this day and age. I had the R4 for the DS and a mod chip for the PS1 but given that today, gaming is relatively cheap with subscription services and the like, no regular gamer would find piracy necessary or worth the risk.

@cantor2537: plus with nintendo doing away with region locking this gen you can buy a japanese switch game and play it without something like the r4.

Would be funny if some modder figured out how to emulate PS3 games on the thing when Sony couldn't

@wenworld70: Dunno about that, I see people recommending relatively old CPUs for rcps3 (or with 6 cores, 12 threads, PS5 has 8 and 16), and you might not need super high end if you're just aiming for a game's original PS3 target framerates, not massively boosting things.

Even if you can't emulate ALL of them, it could still equal or exceed the number of 360 games that are backward compatible on Series, couldn't it?

@Spartan_418: The best recommended CPU for RCPS3 falls in the 124-600 range due to AVX-512 which is NOT an old CPU. That's a light year of difference compared to the cores they put into the PS4. It's not just a matter of cores and threads. It's also instruction set and data throttling. Newer CPUs have seen a huge jump in cache memory.

So, no, you cannot tell me that you can get away with quality PS3 emulation on an older machine. The PS4 is radically different from a PS3, so I'll be shocked if some modder can make it work. Maybe a few games, but that's about it.

@Barighm: This is about the PS5, though. Yes I get that the PS4 had a crappy underpowered tablet CPU where it was never remotely close to possible

This used to be called "modding" and it made a lot of sense on ps1, ps2 and even on PS3, thou PS3 was limited to single player games.

I still have a PS2 with a "thunder chip" on it.

Back then, you could pop a ps1 or ps2 game onto a cd/dvd burner and hit copy (with the right software), piracy was at an all time high because nearly all games were single player and the ones that were multiplayer meant you had to have your friends over to play.

Now, you go through all the trouble, you can never update your PS5, run the risk of bricking it, can't play online and for what? 60FPS on a game that's 5 years old?

Unless you can get all of the functionality, including online play, Piracy makes no sense on Consoles. At least not anymore.

@dirtydyk: But look at the upside -- you get to pay for the same games, over and over again now! That's progress!

@Pyrosa: hehehehehe That's a given. (and the irony is not lost on me :) )

You're not paying for the same game, you're paying for the "privilege" of playing the games using your shinny new PS5.

If companies would actually LISTEN to what gamers want instead of always acting like they know better or tell us what we want, this wouldn't happen.

Example: Those of us who already own PS1, PS2 and PS3 disc games would like to play those games again on our new console, and not be ripped off by having to pay to play them on a monthly subscription, so someone invented emulators. Thank you for that!.

Next time Sony Microsoft and Nintendo, It probably would be a better idea to listen to your consumers instead of ripping them off!

Live an learn!

@jecht187: The reason that Microsoft implemented back compatibility and many other features on the Xbox One is because they listened to customer feedback. They proactively asked their customers what they wanted to have on their console and MS started working on those suggestions. They even have an insider program today for those willing to join the program where they implement new ideas on the console and then ask feedback on what customers think about them before implementing them to the general Xbox console population.

You might ask Sony or Nintendo why they don't listen to their customers but that certainly is not the case with Microsoft.

@jecht187: Actually, all of the big three have stated they have plenty of data to support the claim that BC isn't nearly so popular as the tiny minority at gaming websites think it is. MS did it anyway because it was a marketing point for them. The only reason why it's so dumb for Playstation is that they ALREADY HAVE good PS1 and PS2 emulation software. Even so, they tried for a bit with PS2 games on PS4. Clearly nobody cared. And, really, the PS5 has full BC for PS4, and it's all non-DRM'd which is better than what Xbox is doing. Sony did keep their promises in that sense.

Besides, have you checked your PS1 discs lately? The disc rot is setting in, dude. If you're not emulating, you clearly don't care as much about your PS1 games as you think you do.

@jecht187: Bro, the entitlement of this statement is so insane. Why is it their responsibility to make sure you can play a game on an old system you already own? I can't even begin to explain how stupid and ridiculous that is. On top of that you think you're being ripped off. Good lord, no wonder this world is going to hell fast. You have people walking around with this kind of mentality.

If you want to play your old games, then keep the old console. Simple as that.

@thejigga: Exactly. The thing is, these people don’t even think they’re being entitled. They think they’re in the right. It is extremely unreasonable and unrealistic to expect a company to keep letting you bring your old games to new consoles. You buy new consoles for new games. No one makes you get rid of your old console that can still play your old games. The company shouldn’t have to spend extra time and resources on adding a way to play your old stuff, when you have something, already, that will play your old stuff.

@stickemup: To be fair, you'll be hard pressed to find a PS1 that still works or even a PS2 slim that still works. Fat PS2s are much hardier, but they're rare. PS3s with PS1 BC are super rare. My PS1 is in great condition...until the little plastic reader cracked. Now it's dead all because of one piece of plastic. Replacing that little piece of plastic is easy, sure, but people say the cheap after market ones you can find only last for a month at best. It's easier to just keep using my PS2 to play PS1 games...until I discovered the CD discs are rotting. I've been forced to sell them off.

His point is only valid in the sense that Sony DOES have the emulation software for PS1 AND PS2 and it has already been deployed for their modern systems. If they really wanted to, they could make it possible to run old discs on them. But they won't. Because Ryan.

@Barighm: I still own every system I have ever purchased all the way back to an atari 2600 and every single one of them still work to this day. Every. Single. One. Take care of your shit and it will last.

His point isn't valid, you think it is because you feel you're entitled to those things, so you agree with him. The fact you even admit you can easily fix something but refuse to, shows the entitlement even more.

This is why I will never agree with any of you. Can't take responsibility for your own stuff and instead expect them to, and then get mad when they make you pay for the man hours required to do so.

Nobody cares about this. There's not enough decent games on the ps5 to make the time investment to jailbreak worth it. Piracy is going downhill with services like gamepass being available for dirt cheap.

Not worth it. Good luck getting another PS5 after the jailbreak bricks it.
