The Resident Evil Movie Reboot Has Finished Filming

Filming wrapped on the horror project just before the end of 2020.

The new Resident Evil movie has finished filming and is ready for post-production, a tweet from the official Resident Evil account has confirmed. After the six-film series starring Milla Jovovich wrapped up in 2016, the new movie helmed by horror director Johannes Roberts is rebooting the video game adaptation with a brand-new cast.

The end of filming was announced with an on-set shot showing the film slate and an old TV showing static. We already know that the movie will be set in Racoon City in 1998, with Roberts saying he "really wanted to go back to the original first two games." The director has said that he aims to tell "a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences," while still recreating the terrifying experience of playing the game for the first time.

The new Resident Evil movie is scheduled to release on September 9, 2021.

The Resident Evil movie isn't the only adaptation of Capcom's iconic horror series that's currently in the works. Netflix has licensed two shows based on the franchise, with one set to be a live action spin-off around two new characters in the Wesker family living in a place called New Racoon City, and the other an animated series about Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. The animated show, Infinite Darkness, is expected in 2021.

Jody foster should be the leading cast member this time with meg Ryan.

It'll be the best resident evil ever.

That last series had nothing to do with bringing the RE experience to films and everything to do with Paul WS Anderson getting his wife work.

I hope it's decent though videogame movies tend to be terrible when sticking to the source material and adapting that into a 2 hour movie.

Like the remakes, this was rushed and will be a worse product because of it. Hopefully these fools actually learned that a reboot typically begins with the first one.

WOW! Shot really fast, and the casting of Leon and Jill look spot on, just like the games. LMAO.

Studios execs: “Resident Evil ended 4 years ago! Quick! Someone make a reboot, ASAP!”

For the record, I don’t mind reboots. It’s just ridiculous how quickly everything is rebooted now.

Why can't we get a director like Kevin Feige, The Russo brothers, Jordan Peele, Quentin Tarantino, Sam Mendes, David F. Sandberg, James Cameron, Hideaki Anno, Shinji Higuchi, Pete Docter, Ron Clements, or at the very least a James Gunn to do a video game movie?!

How come every single time they make a video game movie. They have to pick the directors that are so bottom of the barrel. They are located underneath the barrel.

@illegal_peanut:

A-list directors tend to look down on video games as an art form. Ironic, especially since “lowly” comic books have proven to be such a cash cow.

But remember too that the first two Resident Evil games are kind of trapped in that nineties take on eighties action flicks which is considered retro at best and “problematic” at worst. Some directors can walk that line; some give us WW1984 instead.

@illegal_peanut: Read up on the Bioshock movie history. A-list director required an R rating, required to stay true to the source material (read: INTEGRITY), and required a large budget.

Hollywood investors laughed him out the door.

That's why this will never happen.

Logan and Deadpool were flukes -- Disney made sure of that.

@illegal_peanut: While I would love an A-list director to make a video game movie, good directors are smart enough to stay the hell away from these movies. I think a bigger problem is actually the writers. Directors can only do so much with a shitty script. They need an entire A-list team to make one of these well. Unfortunately, the budget has to increase significantly for that to happen.

@Pupchu: There is no "dubbed version" of the original Resident Evil, Pupchu. Yes, the dialogue was recorded separately and then dubbed in, but the English VO is the only one available worldwide. They originally did Japanese VO for the 1996 release, but dropped it on quality concerns. 😏🗾

@Pyrosa: It is redundant, Pyrosa. At least until someone journeys to the Far East and dives deep to retrieve those legendary recordings. Retroactively redeeming Pupchu's comment is as good a reason as any to do anything.
