The Rise Of Skywalker Will Reveal Who Rey's Parents Are

Who are Rey's parents?

This year's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will address one of the most-discussed elements of the new trilogy: who the heck are Rey's parents? Actress Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, told The USA Today that director JJ Abrams is planning to reveal more details about her parentage in the upcoming film.

"(Director J.J. Abrams) did say the question is answered. So at the end of the film, you do know what the dealio is," she said.

Now Playing: Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise Of Skywalker Teaser Trailer

In The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) told Rey that her parents were no one of significance; they were only "filthy junk traders," according to Kylo Ren. Ren, who is the movie's villain, told this to Rey in the middle of a tense, emotional scene where he was directly trying to manipulate her, so many have theorized that he was indeed lying.

Abrams said earlier this year that The Rise of Skywalker aims to offer a satisfying conclusion not only to the new trilogy that began with 2015's The Force Awakens, but also for the entire "Skywalker Saga" that began in 1977. Part of this is revealing who Rey's parents are, it seems.

Abrams said he doesn't want to retcon what director Rian Johnson did in The Last Jedi with Ren telling Rey her parents were nobody, but there is more to the story. "I don't want to say that what happens in Episode 8 [didn't happen]," Abrams said. "We have honored that. But I will say that there's more to the story than you've seen."

Some of the theories about Rey's parentage include that she is the daughter of Luke Skywalker, a Kenobi, or a descendant of Palpatine, among others.

The Rise of Skywalker releases in theatres in December. In addition to Ridley and Driver, the movie stars John Boyega as Finn, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata, Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux, Mark Hamill as Luke, and Billy Dee Williams as Lando. I really liked the idea of Rey's parents being just some deadbeats who abandoned her on a crappy planet. But, no, we gotta have a family connection to some established character to appease the fans. Apparently, space magic runs in the blood, and not just you know, being all mystical and randomly choosing someone for a greater destiny.

Whoever it is, it'll probably become the dictionary definition of contrivance. My bet is the 50's diner guy from Ep 2. I mean, when you think about it for like two seconds, it's obvious.

I want Rey and Kylo to get intimate and then later find out they are brother and sister. After she gets pregnant.

IIRC isn't it now canon that Palpatine force-impregnated Shmi so she could virgin-birth Anakin?

Then he caught fire and got all messed up, so maybe he just did it again to make a new force baby that would actually live up to it's potential.

Alternatively, it's the old one reincarnated, which kinda makes Rey a Lady Vader (which certainly fits with the current media trends).

@h_lss: I don't think so - while they technically threw out the novels which confirmed that Palpatine's master, Darth Plagueis was the one who created Anakin, Revenge of the Sith still hints pretty strongly that Plagueis was responsible for Anakin's creation.

@bigdavex: Nah. The novels don't count for anything anymore. This came from Disney's tie-in comics.

I liked the idea of her parents being nobody drug addicts who sold her. I really hope she's not a part of some dynasty or ancestry or special bloodline. That's such a cliche. Haven't we had enough of that kind of determinism by now?

@tom_cat_01: If she wasn't so overpowered, then yes her parents wudn have mattered. Her character arc was fine for the 1st two-thirds of TFA, until she performed a successful Jedi mind trick, having only heard of the force mere hours before. From there, she went from underdog to full Mary Sue mode for the remainder of the movie, & continued to do so in the sequel. Her character just became less & less believable as the trilogy progressed. If she had gifted parents, that might explain some of the impossible feats she's pulled off.

Considering she masters every ability that supposedly takes years of practice in the first attempt, it would have to be a very good reveal.

Palpatine makes sense, but how old would he have been if he had her, and who was her mother? A clone of Palpatine makes more sense, with obvious changes as to hide her (his) true identity.

I still think it'll cut back to the bit where she's offered to sell BB-8 and it was all a daydream. She thinks "F that!" And sells him. Roll credits.

@juberline: It was revealed recently that Palpatine is Anakin's father. He didn't do it the "traditional" way though. He used the force to create a baby in Shmi Skywalker's belly. Kind of like the Christian mythology.

So yes, he could absolutely have conceived Rey the same way and his age doesn't matter. If he was never actually gone even after death, he could still influence the world from beyond the grave, the same way Yoda burned down the Jedi library in TLJ.

Do I think this all sounds stupid? Absolutely. But Star Wars is what it is.

Why did we let Jar Jar Abrams ruin two of the greatest Sci fi franchises of our time? Don't care what people say VII played off nostalgia and became worse due to Last Jedi practically ignoring it.

@gamingdevil800: I'd argue that JJ successfully reinvigorated the Star Trek franchise with the 2009 movie. Of course, I also agree that he simultaneous destroyed it with the sequel, Into Darkness. Beyond was more than decent, but cudn recover from the brand damage dealt by Into Darkness. I suspect Ep IX will go down the same manner, since extensive damage was dealt to the Star Wars brand by TLJ.

@spacemedafighterx: He dind't reinvigorate it. He started selling it to a fanbase with lower standards. Who were only waiting for a new star wars anyway, and abandoned ship the second star wars was announced.

He's still doing damage to trek as long as that talentless Hack Alex Kurtsmann is involved.

@gamingdevil800: Star Trek was already ruined before Abrams even started working on that franchise. If it hadn't been, there'd have been no need to reboot it.

@mdinger: You misunderstand. Just because I'll never stop caring about the SW universe does not mean that I automatically love everything in the franchise.

But since I really like this latest trilogy, I absolutely care about who Rey's parents are.

I know everyone hates Eps. 7 and 8, but I love them. There is nothing remotely egregious in either of the new eps that would make me uninterested in how this new trilogy is going to wrap up.

@aross2004: There are parts of the new trilogy that I dislike, such as the uselessness of Finn and Rose in Episode 8 and the way they try to play off Admiral Holdo as a bad guy just to catalyze the events of the movie, but there are a lot of elements of the new trilogy that I do enjoy. I genuinely enjoy Rey, Finn, and Poe as characters (even if I don't particularly enjoy Rey's powerleveling) and feel like they would've benefited from more screentime and less time trying to overcome the presence of Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher on-screen (Interestingly, Harrison Ford didn't overpower them and I genuinely enjoyed his dynamic with Finn on Starkiller base.)

I also love Maz and REALLY wish she could get more involvement in the movies. That was the biggest burn in Episode 8 when she only had a small role with a couple lines of dialog and wasn't even physically present. Going forward with the next trilogies, I want her character to be much more involved, especially if they do go forward with her having force powers and being as old as Yoda. She could be a force to be reckoned with.

@aross2004: Fair enough. For me the introduction of hyperspace ramming in The Last Jedi irreversibly broke the established canon. Given how effective it is, if they don't have purpose built ram ships (piloted by droids) ramming everything and anything in the next film I don't see how they maintain narrative consistency. Not to mention that they never explained why no one thought to do this previously (e.g ram the Death Star, Star Destroyers etc), despite thousands of years of hyperspace travel - i.e. no-one ever tried it before, not even by accident, over thousands of years, really?

Force Ghosts can also now directly interact with the world according to TLJ - Yoda casts Force Lightning (a Dark Force Power BTW!) on the tree and sets it alight - so why did Obi Wan and Yoda not help Luke fight Vader in Return of the Jedi as Force Ghosts? In any case, I must now expect to see this in the next film, because if Luke, Yoda and Obi Wan don't help Rey as Force Ghosts to fight Kylo I'll be like, erm, why aren't they?

@mdinger: Absolutely agree with ur 1st paragraph. As for ur 2nd paragraph however...

Bendu was an ancient, force-sensitive, sentient creature that was featured in the excellent Clone Wars series, thus canon. In that episode, he practically turned into a force ghost & unleashed a lightning storm on the Stormtroopers, despite being neutral in the force. So I've no problem with force ghost Yoda conjuring lightning. There's a precedence, see?

@spacemedafighterx: Yeah, but you still need to explain why Yoda/Obi Wan didn't help Luke in RoJ. And you definitely now expect them (and now Luke also) to help Rey defeat Kylo going forward, right?

@mdinger: Luke fought Vader on Death Star 2.0 which was indoors. From what I've seen, force ghosts Bendu & Yoda manipulated weather instead of directly producing force lightning. So maybe that's why Luke din get any help in RoJ? I dunno, Im just rationalizing.

I doubt it's any of that because their writers are garbage first movie was only good because it played off our nostalgia. The second was utter garbage. Don't have high hopes for the third.
