The Simpsons' James L. Brooks Confirms Homer Will Keep Choking Bart - "Nothing's Getting Tamed"

"He'll continue to be loved by his father in a specific way."

[UPDATE 2] Co-creator and producer of The Simpsons, James L. Brooks, told People that Homer will not stop choking Bart. "Don't think for a second we're changing anything," he said.

"Nothing's getting tamed. Nothing, nothing, nothing," Brooks said. "He'll continue to be strangled—[if] you want to use that awful term for it. He'll continue to be loved by his father in a specific way."

[UPDATE] The producers of The Simpsons have responded to reports that Homer will stop choking Bart on The Simpsons via an image showing Homer choking Bart.

"Homer Simpson was unavailable for comment as he was busy strangling Bart," the producers said in a statement on social media. An image showed Homer strangling Bart but instead of saying, "Why you little!" he is saying, "Why you little clickbaiting!!"

The original story follows below.

The Simpsons, one of the longest-running and most iconic TV shows ever, is seemingly doing away with one of its most well-known recurring gags. On a recent episode of The Simpsons, Homer explains that he no longer chokes his son Bart because "times have changed."

As part of the Season 35 episode "McMansion & Wife," which debuted on October 22, Homer confirms that he no longer throttles Bart by wringing his neck with his hands. Homer meets a new neighbor, Thayer, and shakes hands. "Whoa! That's quite a grip," Thayer says to Homer. He replies, "See, Marge, strangling the boy has paid off. Just kidding. I don't do that any more. Times have changed."

The producers of The Simpsons have yet to officially comment on whether or not this is a permanent change for the show.

As IGN reminds us, Homer has not strangled Bart since an episode of The Simpsons from Season 31 years ago. In a Season 22 episode, "Love is a Many Strangled Thing" from 2011, Homer attends a "father enrichment class" with NBA legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar. He teaches Homer that choking someone is actually no fun at all, and so Homer quits choking Bart.

The strangulation of Bart by Homer dates back decades. Homer is known to choke bart when he does something bad, preceding the act by saying to him, "Why you little." Homer chokes Bart so hard that his eyes bulge and his tongue emerges from his throat.

It's not limited to Homer, alone, as Bart strangled an ostrich once. Then there was the time that an adult President Lisa choked grown-up Bart. In a Treehouse of Horror episode, Homer clones himself and then proceeds to choke himself. You can see a strangulation compilation below.

Homer no longer choking Bart, if this indeed a permanent change, isn't the only significant update to the show in recent times. In 2020, it was announced that The Simpsons will no longer use white actors to voice non-white characters. Characters who were recast included Apu and his wife Manjula, Dr. Hibbert, Lou, Cookie Kwan, Drederick Tatum, and Bumblebee Man, among others.

In January, The Simpsons was renewed yet again, bringing the show through 2025 and beyond 800 episodes. Seasons 1-34 are streaming on Disney Plus.

This is sooooo stupid. The gag has been dead for a decade, no one cared. Then someone says “look, he doesn’t do that anymore!” and the dumbest half of the internet is like “OMG THEY ARE DESTROYING EVERYTHING THAT WAS ONCE GOOD IN MY LIFE” and now the showrunners have to say “oh don’t worry, Homer still strangles Bart”. They’ll probably have to do an episode of Homer Strangling Bart™️asap to make sure snowflakes don’t accuse other people of being snowflakes and too sensitive about a cartoon

@Crazy_sahara: the only definition of dp I know requires three people. And I support choking when the bottom is into it. Wait, am I misreading some signals here?

@illegal_peanut: You have to click on the recent tab. Not sure why it is not the default setting. I always have to change it every time I visit the homepage.

@robbie23: Yeah, but that's the "popular" tab. You would think they would fill the popular tab with recent popular stuff, or popular stuff in general. But some of those articles don't even have a comment or an upvote.

Amazing how outraged and offended the snowflakes became when the news dropped that Homer was going to stop choking Bart. I swear the people who constantly rant about "cancel culture" and over-sensitivity have the lowest capacity to regulate their own emotions over things that really don't matter.

Next month they'll be frothing at the mouth and ranting about how leftists cancelled "Baby, it's cold outside" despite nobody actually being offended by the song.

"Nothing has been tamed," he said, before hiding his framed picture of Apu.

It's been tame for a very long time. And the Simpsons cracked under the IDPOL whip years ago

Doesn’t even need to be spoken about or reported on. Don’t watch if you can’t handle it like a grown human being.

Well I mean it was time to stop the choking, after Bart began getting bricked up down there while being choked... it got a little awkward. I still enjoyed the show though.

I think I outgrew the Simpsons a long time ago (like season 13). But like with a lot of shows / franchises that lost me over the years, I don't feel entitled to them or anything like that. Let the younger people enjoy these, and I'll just treasure the nostalgia I had for what the show used to be.

In the show itself, a lot of things changed as the characters became more developed. It worked in its favour for some, and detriment for others. I don't think it would be particularly popular to have bart being his original "don't have a cow" type character etc.

So, this would be one of those things that I found hilarious as a kid, but now... it just sort of feels uncomfortable. I don't think it's a gag worth any real outcry one way or another, but personally, I won't be sad to see it go. ...Not that I've watched the Simpsons in a good long minute though, so I guess the point is moot.

"Times have changed." Translation - The whiny little Internet b*tches no longer have a sense of humor, are chronically online, and are offended 24/7. God help these people if they watched an episode of ANY Looney Tunes cartoon! The run on emotional support llamas would shut down the world!

Most surprising thing is that the show is even still going, and that people are still watching it... Not sure I've watched a Simpsons episode in almost 25 years now. As for the choking, if the writer says such activity hasn't happened since even before a 2011 episode, then this article is quite a non-issue...

People seems to misunderstand the gag. It's to show that after all this time, corporal punishment is ineffective at preventing or deterring deviant behavior.

I'm sure it won't take long for snowflakes to be flustered about this trivial change to a cartoon.

Oops, looks like they already are based on the comments below.

How fragile does someone have to be to care at all about a change like this.

There are different expectations maybe not because of society, but because of the progression of the complexity of the show.

It kind of makes sense. As time goes on, they have fleshed out the characters and made them more complex, more grounded. Past events get referred to, making events seem more like a "reality" in that world, that they actually took place. There are even heartfelt moments that impact people in genuine ways. Slowly, they peel away cartoonish tropes, the characters become more nuanced, and people think of them in more complex terms. People may expect them to behave along those lines, less so in cartoonish ways.

Physical violence of any sort is also not OK.
Should we censor all of that out of our media as well?
So are intentionally hurtful words.
Does that all need to be scared out of our writers as well?

No seriously, if you're one of these woke types who called for this,
then are you also calling for the above ^^^
and if not, why not? What's with the double standard?

Surprised that the choking gag ran this longer than it needed to be...it stopped being funny after the first few times. Not even from a child abuse POV, but from a comedy POV!

Enough with the “times have changed” thing. Do you know why they’ve changed? It’s because people give in to the minority of people who think these things need to change, even though it’s harmless. These are cartoon characters. A kid isn’t being hurt, and this isn’t inspiring people to choke their kids (aside from people who are mentally unwell in the first place and would choke their kids anyways). It’s going to be ridiculous if this is a permanent change. We’re going to get to a point where characters just stand around complimenting each other.
