The Sims 4 Free Content Update Is Inspired by Past Games

I got acne on my 16th birthday.

16 years ago today, the original version of The Sims released, and I locked all of my Sims in a room to watch them die slowly for the very first time--ah, memories! To celebrate the series' 16th anniversary, The Sims 4 receives free content today based on the previous three Sims games.

No Caption Provided

The game has added an homage to the Tragic Clown from the original game's expansion, Livin' Large. He's come to the fourth entry as a painting that will leave your Sims feeling sad upon seeing it. The Gardener NPC and a Plumbob poster that apparently doesn't do anything have also been added.

The second game's tribute brings the Grilled Cheese aspiration to The Sims 4. It turns grilled cheese sandwiches into your Sims' favorite food, though the official Sims website says it might be a "mildly unhealthy obsession."

Lastly, the Kleptomaniac trait makes its way from The Sims 3. If a Sim has this trait, they won't be able to stop themselves from stealing random objects from the places they visit.

They're all available in today's update.

@Yams1980: Don't bother until a few more expansions.

indeed, thanks for the info.... i read up a bit more on what people thought about the game since its release and it seems like it hasn't gotten anywhere and isn't worth playing.

I quite enjoy The Sims 4, over Sims 3 in terms of improved performance and build features. Though I'll admit the gameplay is somewhat more shallow then The Sims 3.

No sh*t. Every game in the series is getting the same expansions every time..... How about next time - release the game with everything already included! But i doubt there will be a next time - EA killed the Sims franchise.

@Saidrex Didn't EA shut down Maxis? No more Sims.

@hmoobpaladin: Maxis haven't headlined a Sims game since The Sims 2. They were involved in The Sims 4 for a while but the bulk of the work was done by The Sims Studio.

@hmoobpaladin: They closed Maxis Emeryville, which was the main Maxis studio, but there are other smaller ones around the world. But aside from that, there is actually a completely different division of EA known as The Sims Studio; it's quite confusing. I really doubt EA would not consider making a Sims 5, even if 4 didn't do as well as hoped. This is EA we're talking about!

@unaminous: I agree that there will be a Sims 5. There's no other games like it out there and people are willing to buy it.

@Saidrex: I wouldn't be surprised if The Sims 5 is free to play, with most of the content sold as microtransactions. They've been giving away the base game of 4 for ages.

The way EA releases a barely functional game and then add on little paid on expansions, its pretty much setup that way now. I never got Sims 3 since I hadn't really played Sims 2 much before i got bored pretty quickly... since Sims 4 is even less of a game from what i heard, I can't see myself ever trying it.

@pongley: Considering SimCity 2013 and EA's other trends, I think you might be right on the money on this one.
