The Sims Online reborn as EA-Land

Electronic Arts relaunches the online version of the Sims; gamers can reactivate old accounts or sign up for free.

The Sims Online was originally launched in autumn 2002, but was left to die by Electronic Arts in October 2003. But now that Internet speeds are faster and broadband connections are pervasive, EA has decided to relaunch the game.

Now titled EA-Land, the game is currently still partly under construction, and bods have been working on it since May 2007. People who used to have a Sims Online account can reregister before March to get all of their privileges and stuff back. The 12 cities from the original online game will be expanded, each house can now have more simultaneous visitors, and players can now have more than one sim in each city.

EA-Land will be free to play, but to purchase furniture and other items, gamers need to earn simoleans (the in-game currency). These can be bought for real money, or earned by selling custom-made objects, running a store, or doing jobs for other players. If gamers want to convert a bucketload of simoleans into real cash, or build a house on a bigger lot, they will need to be subscribers.

EA senior vice president Luc Barthelet commented, "We have made some big changes already to the game, and many more are coming over the next few months."

the name change seemed to turned off a lot of gamers, and the dies because of it, it's nice that it was made free, but the name killed the game

Something like "Sims World" would have made much more sense as a re-launch title.

EA Land. LOL. Worst game title evar? Why would anyone want to go to EA Land? We are all trying to keep our independence from EA Land as much as possible. We will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.

What a terrible idea for a name, take one of the most despised company names in gaming today and add the word land to it; sounds like a recipe for disaster.

LOL ... "EA-Land" But sounds... sort of amusing I guess? Are graphics same as the old one? But wouldn't that basically just be an updated re-launch... Hnn...

Oh I'm well aware Sims came first. I remember talking to one of the Maxis developers in 2000 about the Sims Online, well before Second Life became reality. Making the gameplay free, charging for possessing items, and otherwise reinstating the game's presence online, however, seems to me to be a result of someone at Maxis looking over at Linden Labs and saying "well they're making it work, why can't we". There is a small rise in "social sim" online games like Second Life, Red Light, and even chat-based mini online game worlds like IMVU and Zwinky. This would give cause for Maxis to reinstate their dinosaur. It's a good idea on paper but, while it doesn't take much to offer a chat and social connections experience, Sims doesn't offer much else in terms of graphics, funcionality, or social interaction options that the other games do.

They're not really trying to "capitalize" off of Second Lilfe. The Sims Online actually launched before Second Life. The Sims Online has a long history with EA and Maxis, and they're trying to revitalize the game.

It sounds to me like they're trying to get a piece of Second Life's pie, but with 2D graphics and an inability to make and code objects right there in the game world, I think they're just going to make another MMORPG where you log on and exist without purpose. Most people complain Second Life doesn't offer much because they don't have the understanding or desire to make the parts of the game that they want to play. Of the people that do understand this, however, everything from dance clubs with streaming music to entire 3D theme parks with rollercoasters are built. Sims doesn't offer this kind of variation in gameplay. It may have worked in 2002 but six years later, it's not going to cut it. Of course I could be wrong; I am a lot.

This looks like it will be great, it`s free to play, I don`t care what name is. Plus I always did want to check out the sims online, so go EA for actually making a free product(with the exception of buying furniture)

Sins, btw Brilliantly deserves the 9.0 score and editors choice award gamespot gave it. Im a big fan of the CnC series, but this game blows it out of the water, ive never seen such a brilliantly ballanced RTS out of the box

Another thing people need to realize Why? 1)Its aimed at the casual market, not the hardcore market. Casual gamers don't care at all/much about visuals in a game, they only care about gameplay. 2)The low tech graphics leads to another plus for casual gamers: You dont need a Maibatsu Monstrosity like computer(lol reference) that gobbles 1200 watts of electricity (yeah im not kidding) and costs as much as a certified pre-owned car to run the game. Lets face it, asside from the really hardcore crowd, there rarely is anyone who has a Personal Super Computer with all the latest hardware and software installed. Infact, Most casual gamers still have a computer that was bundled up at the local Electronics superstore for a discount price back in 2002. Basically, lower graphics means larger crowd, larger crowd = more potential players and micro transactions. Lets take Sins of a Solar Empire for example.(i know not a casual game but ull see where im going) The game Has nice visuals but comes nowhere near next gen games like COD4(PC version for my example) and crysis, which have been high profile and EXTREMELY highly advertised games. The advantage of that though, is that my crappy laptop which has an onboard 128 MB super low end videocard that robs its memory from my ram, can run it lag free on big games without turning everything off. And my 4 year old PC, which's only hot mod are a 2 and a half year old ATI x800xl puny 256 mb videocard and my Soundblaster X-FI(everything else is stock and 4 years old) , can run the game with nearly everything maxed out without a single hickup on massive games and it looks beautiful. If i tried running COD4 however, my computer would commit suicide, I cant even run battlefield 2142 without nasty framerate issues. So you know what? Although sins has done ZERO advertisement, the game is still beating EVERYTHING(including the hallowed COD4) on the PC sales charts. (Verified). You know why? Because pretty much anyone can run it, while barely 5% of the PC gaming community have the power to run COD4 maxed out and at most 20% can run it with a usable framerate. Thus, Sins has a much larger market because it is more accessible. So although COD4 was a lot more expensive to make the sins, it will still turn in a much smaller profit (for the pc version) then sins.

Hopefully it's not as ugly as the old one, or boring. Maybe if they made it like Sims 2, but with a sort of social component.

@Montrealien (aka fellow quebecer hehe) You have a pretty strong point there. I remember exactly what you mean about the wii name. People complained but after a while grew accustomed and the console still sells like hotcakes. Worse yet, the ammount of people who claim that EA are a bunch of tyrants and so on but still buy their games/refuse to aknowledge that EA still sells tremendously well no matter what anyone thinks.

Interesting i idea .... the name blows though and should be rethought out. The whole premise seems a bit too much SecondLife ish to me and we all know what happened to that glistening idea of a game (too much content and not enough people).

EA Land? What a stupid name. Stupid. Does the online version still look like the older Sims 1? Stupid. I would rather play Sims 2 offline, and do whatever I want, FOR FREE! Then I dont need to see people say "afk" or "lol" over and over again. Stupid. Oh, and if you run Sims 2 with Xfire, you can chat with your Xfire friends while playing the game, so its basically the same exact thing as The Sucks Online. EA is getting to be a little queer
