The Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Is Getting A Sequel

Paramount is developing a sequel to this year's live-action Sonic film

Great news, Sonic fans. The live-action Sonic The Hedgehog movie released earlier this year is getting a sequel, Variety reports, with both director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller set to return. And a Sonic 2 sequel is coming in 2022.

It is currently unknown whether any of the cast, including James Marsden, who played Sonic's human pal Tom Wachowski, Ben Schwartz, who provided the voice for Sonic himself, or Jim Carrey, who played the villainous Dr. Robotnik, will be reprising their roles. No information about production schedules or potential release dates have been made available at this time.

Now Playing: Sonic The Hedgehog Spoiler Review, Easter Eggs, & Mid-Credits Scene Breakdown

The Sonic movie ended with a post-credits stinger teasing the arrival of another beloved character from the video game franchise: Tails, who, we can hope, will be appearing in the sequel as well. Hopefully, if Tails is involved, he won't have to go through a similarly nightmarish redesign process like his friend Sonic did back before the film's release. Fingers crossed. Also, the movie probably won't be subtitled Sonic: Got 2 Go Fast, but we can dream.

Sonic The Hedgehog is currently available to watch at home, after getting an expedited digital home release during the nationwide theater shutdowns due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

I bet they'll bring in another character from the Sonic series to be the new villain in this movie. Like Knuckles or Shadow.

@lukeaaron17: My mind was on set for Metal Sonic but not Shadow. I have seen Knuckles specious in the beginning of the film, so seeing Knuckles in the sequel wouldn't surprise me.

Was there any doubt? Everyone was already expecting it and the ending was so obvious. It needs to come out in Christmas so it can go along perfectly with what Dr. Robotnik says at the end of the film :P

Here's hoping, but one of the reasons why the movie worked is because it acted like an origin story. Well, that story is over. Now is the time to get back to the core of the story which you have to if Tails is present. I can see Robotnik finding his way back to Sonic's world which is why Tails goes to fetch him. But by this point the story might end up getting all Saturday morning cartoon'ish.

The Sonic movie was cute. It wasn't great by any stretch but it was a nice popcorn flick. I hope they manage to hit the same mood with the next one.

Ben Schwartz was the absolute best thing about this movie. I sincerely hope he was brought on to replace whoever has been doing the game voices for the last few years 'cause it has not been good.
