The Suicide Squad Reveals First Look At Whole Team In Costume
The sort-of sequel/reboot is due out sometime next year.
James Gunn's The Suicide Squad has a notoriously massive cast that's also lit a fuse for rampant speculation that only ended recently on who's playing who. Finally, we have arrived at the next big reveal: Seeing the whole team in costume. The December 2020 issue of Empire has gotten that particular honor in two separate covers--one with the whole cast available on newsstands on October 29, and another subscriber-exclusive version with a slightly different photo that also includes Gunn front and center. You can check those images out below.
During DC FanDome, an event that gave fans their first look at the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel, Joel Kinnaman (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), who will be returning as Col. Rick Flag, indicated that a big reason the upcoming will be successful is because "every page [of the script] made me laugh," adding that Gunn as a director is someone who "commands the genre."
Kinnaman also pointed out that while he is among a handful of actors returning from the predecessor 2016 film, the chemistry with the new cast was similarly harmonious and an enjoyable experience all around, noting, "There was never a bad ego on either of these films; not the first or the second one. There was never a s***** person that was trying to suck up all the air. On both films, there were really generous, warm, funny people around that were just about feeding the collective. There's something about the concept that really helps that vibe."
In addition to Kinnaman, among the returning actors in a predominantly new cast: Margot Robbie (I, Tonya) will again be playing Harley Quinn, Viola Davis (Doubt) as government agent Amanda Waller, and Jai Courtney (Terminator Genisys) as Captain Boomerang. Among the newcomers: Idris Elba (The Wire) as Bloodsport, Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live) as Blackguard, and Nathan Fillion (Firefly) as TDK. John Cena, who joins the cast to play Peacemaker, is already getting his own spin-off limited series for the character.
The Suicide Squad is not a direct follow-up to the first movie, and has been described in the past as a "total reboot" that is still somehow connected to the previous film. Details are still scarce, though a 2021 release date is expected.
