The Tetris Movie Will Be a Trilogy and Here's Why

"The story we conceived is so big."

Producers of the Tetris movie, which has been brewing for years now, have big plans for it. Larry Kasanoff, who is leading the effort to adapt the game for the big screen, told Empire that the rumors that it will be a trilogy are correct.

He says this is being done not necessarily to make more money, but rather to accommodate the huge scope of the story.

"Purely because the story we conceived is so big," he said about why it's a trilogy. "This isn't us splitting the last one of our eight movies in two to wring blood out of the stone. It's just a big story."

Kasanoff also cleared up some confusion about what would actually happen in the movie, considering it's based on a game that doesn't ostensibly have much story.

"We're not going to have blocks with feet running around the movie," he said. "But it's great that people think so. It sets the bar rather low!"

Kasanoff further teased that whatever you might be thinking about the Tetris movie's story, you're probably wrong. "I guarantee you it's not what you think," he said. "No one has come remotely close to figuring out what we're doing."

We also learn that casting for the untitled movie is "well underway," while some shooting will take place in China. Previously, it was reported that the film would feature some Chinese actors.

The Tetris movie is described as an "epic, sci-fi thriller." Kasanoff, who previously worked on Mortal Kombat and True Lies, is producing the movie. Producer Dane Smith (Deadpool, Harry Potter) will work on the film's visual effects.

In May, we learned that the Tetris movie will have an $80 million budget. No specifics about a cast or director have been announced. We also don't know when the movie will come out.

I must admit, the fact that Tetris seems such an utterly poor fit for a movie adaptation makes me very interested to see where the hell they're going with this. I mean, if they made a Last of Us movie, we'd know the story would basically be 'Grizzled white guy and photogenic pre-teen girl shoot/ run away from zombies and pet giraffes', but with this anything could happen.

Not that I'll necessarily go see it, or that it'll be any good, but I'm intrigued.

This may be the first great video game film. Simply because they can do anything they want.

The whole idea is utterly ridiculous. What is the point of basing a movie off of an existing franchise if the movie isn't anything like the original material? It would be hard enough to make one such film plausible, let alone three.

The sad thing is this will probably be financially successful because people will watch awful shit no matter what as long as it has good marketing.

A movie trilogy about Tetris? Hahahaha, and I thought having 8 movies of Fast and Furious was absurd enough...

If the movie Pixels is anything to go by, this Tetris trilogy movie is gonna be a disaster. I'll be surprised if they go past the first movie.

@speed45823: It's not anything to go by. That was Adam Sandler. His movies are a terrible standard to go by. That said, at least his movie had a reasonable concept. Nobody has any idea what Tetris will be about.

@ibonedyourmom: considering that Battleship was made into a fun movie, I can see how a Pomg movie would work as a sci-if movie. I'm hoping we all would be pleasantly surprised by Tetris.

After the first one fails we'll see if those sequels get made.

I have a hunch it's going to be similar in some respect to King of Kong in that it's not so much going to be a film about Tetris as it will be a film about people with Tetris somehow being a core part of the story.

This movie is going to be so bad. It won't ever have three movies because no one will see the first one.

Either that or it will have nothing to do with Tetris.

Sigh. The future is now.

When you take something as absolutely basic as Tetris and try to create depth when there never was any to begin with, only bad things can be expected. This is clearly just another case of people making a movie because they think the name alone will make it sell. I hope it bombs so that people think twice before doing this crap again.

P.S.: "The Tetris movie is described as an "epic, sci-fi thriller." Kasanoff, who previously wroked on Mortal Kombat and True Lies..."

Really? Hitting the spellchecker was too difficult, gamestop?
