The Walking Dead Changes Showrunner As Ratings Fall

Dead swap.

AMC's zombie drama The Walking Dead is changing showrunners. It has been reported that Scott Gimple will leave the role he has occupied since 2013, and will be replaced by Angela Kang, who has previously worked on the show as a writer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gimple will now serve as chief content officer for the Walking Dead media franchise, which also includes the spin-off show Fear the Walking Dead, as well as "gaming and future brand extensions on a variety of platforms." Kang has worked on the show since 2011, and has written over 20 episodes. She will take over at the start of Season 9, which is expected to premiere in the fall.

No Caption Provided

This change of personnel comes at a time of falling ratings for The Walking Dead. The 7.9 million broadcast viewers of the mid-season finale last month was the lowest number since Season 2's in 2011. This is in comparison to the 10.58 million viewers that watched the mid-season of Season 7 in 2016, and nearly half of what the equivalent episode achieved for Season 5 in 2014.

Last month, producer David Alpert defended the show in light of its decline in viewers. He explained that looking at the figures for the show's live broadcast was misleading as to how popular it really is. "I don't think in any way the brand has lost its relevance in general," he said. "I think we're just seeing a decline in urgency across all media to consume something at a specific time. I still get people coming up to me at conventions talking about, they're in the middle of season six. They can't believe what's going on."

The Walking Dead Season 8 returns in February. In the meantime, you can click here to find out why we think Negan is ruining the show.

Gimple got promoted so now he runs EVERYTHING. THIS MAN SHOULD NOT BE IN CHARGE. Scott that ****** Gimple has been ruining this show since season 1 with all his pussy "Lets tlak about our feelings" dialouge. And the lines for this show have always been shit mostly due to him and people who probably speak broken english.

"Lets go see what we see"
"I had to keep them safe"
"If you take, you don't get to live, if you live you can't take"
and my favorite
"I don't know who I was then or now, but now I know who I was then, and I know who I am now"

THAT IS TWD DIALOGUE EVERY EPISODE

I believe the show is still VERY, VERY popular. Case in point, they have added ANOTHER The Walking Dead Tour in Atlanta. There are at least 3 different daily tours! The media explosion (choices) most certainly accounts for some of the dip in "viewership". However, the story line needs some fresh perspectives. Not since Neagon lined all of the remaining crew up to decide who's head to bash in has the show been "must see." Wasn't that 2 years ago?

media is available from an ever increasing range of sources. just because people are not watching it on tv doesnt mean they are not watching it. for example. netflix exclusive movie bright has pretty high viewing figures on netflix but the actual overall viewing figures across multiple sources is off the chain

It was time for Gimple to go. His whole philosophy that " no one is safe" is getting annoying. I know he got a promotion but it was a way for AMC to get rid of him making day to day decisions on TWD.

Based on some of the bad decisions being made on the show lately, especially the imminent death of Coral (in my Rick voice), no wonder the show is falling off

Gimple received a promotion, so I don't think AMC was disappointed with him.

I think the show is just getting old and stale. This past season, or half season was pretty weak. The Neagon character is a great character, but the show is just not very interesting and there are WAY too many plot holes and things that just don't make sense. The writing is what you would expect from a show in its eighth year. They need some fresh ideas. I believe this "kingdom" storyline is the absolute worst idea they've had. Prior to the "kingdom" I believe the show was still pretty good. IMHO the show climaxed when they killed off Beth.

He's right about ratings not being so relevant. I hardly know anyone who watches anything on cable anymore, it's all Netflix and Hulu and so forth. I haven't watched the show from cable since like season 2.

Hmm, changing showrunners may provide a short relief but the problem is not showrunners, it´s the show getting old and stale and after 8 years of the same , no wonder people look elsewhere.'

I just feel like the show has no purpose, i think they should try and find a cure or vaccine or a remote island or whatever. No its just kill kill kill. Almost no interesting characters left and mark my words the will kill of more characters that have been on the show since S1-S2.

@alucardswrath: I mean, Z nation is pretty garbage though. Like most Syfy low budget garbage. Not saying Walking Dead is all that much better (it isnt), but Z nation is mostly cringey stuff that feels like it was written for middle schoolers (and the production value looks like it was made by middle schoolers too).

@P00DGE: Yeah, but the difference is that Z Nation knows it is everything you just described and embraces it. They aren't trying to be anything they're not. They have giant, rolling balls made of zombies, and storms made of bubble bath foam for God's sake.

@chronica: Oh so the Z Nation show gets a BIG PASS only because of one thing: IT KNOWS IT'S RIDICULOUS. Oh so by that logic, if The Walking Dead KNEW it was ridiculous too it would suddenly become super watchable to all you people? Not a good example guy.

@Poodger: There's enough silly garbage out there as it is. I could barely remember the last good movie or TV show I've watched these years. Movies and tv shows are terrible nowadays. They lack that classic quality that old movies had. Too much eye rolling cheesy stuff with crappy acting and execution these days. People's standards have taken a further nose dive.

- too many filler episodes
- no overarching story, no search for a cure or a solution
- zombies took a backseat, they're just annoying things now and no longer the main antagonists
- way too much nonsense in the writing, idiotic combat tactics

@TheBruuz: I would say they are more worried about surviving than a cure. That is what the show is about, and has basically been about. Sure, Eugene told them he knew how to fix this, but he really didn't.

I stopped watching the show. It has become boring.

@TheBruuz: tbf, this group has no one that would inspire them to look for a cure. Eugene was there for a while, but he's not even remotely at the skill level they need for that. Maybe if they came across a bunch of geneticists or virologists, but you're talking about a bunch of regular people from a life that didn't have anything to do with science. Looking for a cure is not on their minds.

While I agree about the zombies, also understand that they're decaying and are becoming naturally less of an issue because they don't move as well anymore.

While there are Zombies I will keep watching. I just love anything with a post-apocalyptic vibe. A series tends to run out of steam because everything has just been done before. It has to try and keep re-inventing itself and sometimes it works while other times it falls flat on its ass. Must admit I don't like these overall bad guys like The Governor and Negan they remind me of Comic Book villains surprisingly enough. And in a TV series I think they are just too over the top for the perceived reality.

Not sure ratings these days are a good indication of popularity as they were. A lot of people don't necessarily watch at the time of broadcast but watch it on catch-up, streaming services and download etc. But at the same time I think David Alpert is kidding himself if he thinks this is the sole reason for the decline. The decline is down to a fall in the quality of the show. Inevitable perhaps, but still possibly salvageable. I would end it to be honest, do some other spin-offs going in different directions. Perhaps a different country, it would be interesting to see a setting where firearms are not so prevalent and how people cope etc.

They keep dragging it out too much with these perspective episodes. Season 7 really kicked things up a notch, it was so good and started with a bang yet so far season 8 has been a bit of a cluster **** and for the most part, boring. I hope these new showrunners can bring it back up to scratch for the arrival of the whisperers, Neegan the badass from season 7 seems like a big pussy in season 8.

Wearing an apron and making spaghetti with Carl? GTFO they ruined him

Bad enough Jeffery Dean Morgan makes it seem like Negan has AIDs

I was honestly surprised the show was still on, I'm one of the people who refused to play their bs game with the season 6 cliffhanger, and switched to the comics instead. Better tools and respects the audience and their intelligence and doesn't promise something to get you interested and then pull the rug out in the 11 th hour and laugh because you have to wait 8 months. ...

@Jdzspace: The comics have been just as poorly written, with just as many fake outs (Carl burning to death anyone?) but the current Commonwealth intro has brought me back, hopefully this isnt as drawn out and as boring as The "we walk around for ages not doing anything" Whisperer War saga.

The show is past its prime. I'm should have wrapped up a season or two after the Governor was knocked off. Neegan is the single most annoyimng character in tv history. And not annoying in a bad like. I mean like when he is on the screen the show spirals out of control and I want to turn it off. The actor is so one dimensional in his moves, speech pattern - it truly is comical. It is totally absurd to believe that no one can just kill this guy! He has a baseball bat! That's it. A baseball bat. He should have died a few shows after he was introduced to the series. It has become repetirive, boring and monotonous. The show needs to end and wrap things up with this season, which really should be its last.
