The Witcher 3 Had Its Biggest Day Ever On Steam

The Witcher 3 continues to be a success for developer CD Projekt Red.

CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is still going strong four years after launch--stronger than ever, as it turns out. With the recent release of Netflix's The Witcher series on December 20, the open-world action-RPG is seemingly attracting a huge audience on PC, with the Steam version recently seeing more players than ever before--including its original release day.

According to Marcin Momot, CDPR's global community lead, The Witcher 3 hit a concurrent Steam player count of 93,835 on Sunday, December 29. That wasn't a one-day fluke--the number has since been beaten by December 30's peak of 94,651. Steam indicates that the open-world action-RPG is one of 2019's top-selling titles. No specific data on that front was shared, but it is positioned in the "Gold" tier alongside games like Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Resident Evil 2 Remake.

The Witcher 3 also saw an increase in Steam players right after Netflix's The Witcher debuted and has steadily grown ever since. The TV series is based on the books, not the games (which were also inspired by the books), and has been renewed for a second season.

CDPR and The Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski have settled their dispute recently, with the agreement "confer[ing] new rights" to the developer while keeping its existing title rights for everything The Witcher related. Sapkowski had previously filed a legal demand for $16 million and CDPR responded by saying it "will go to great lengths to ensure [an] amicable resolution."

The Witcher 3 has received a plethora of accolades since its 2015 launch, including several Game of the Year awards. It is also one of the few games to earn GameSpot's coveted 10/10 "Essential" rating, with our review calling it 'incredible, sumptuous, captivating, and inspiring."

All this despite Gamespot’s garbage review (4/10) of the Netflix series wherein the reviewer complained (on a gaming website no less) that the show was not close enough to the short stories originally written.

@mtb1646: It wasn't, but that doesn't mean the show deserved a 4/10. This is why I tell people to eschew these reviews until scoring is dropped or standardized!

@mtb1646: If the same reviewer would have reviewed or even read - the games themselves have little to do with the original stories and are a prequel ish stories that have nothing to do with the plot of the books.

@jenovaschilld: Please explain your thesis here. Otherwise, I shall briefly establish how the games themselves actually tie-in to the book plots.

Witcher 1 has backstory based on the books (particularly the Nilfgaardian-Nordling Wars), and AFAIK picks up a some years after Lady of the Lake, the last book (chronologically) in the saga; Geralt is searching for Yennefer after that whole "Ciri saga" is resolved and Ciri is worlds away (literally). Then he loses his memory, a sorcerer / assassin band attack Kaer Morhen, and we know the rest.

Witcher 2 has Geralt back on track, searching for Yen again IIRC, in the employ of Foltest's court, during a time when there is a build-up to yet another Nilfgaardian expansion war into Northern countries. So, again, it directly follows up the Second Nilfgaardian War (the great war the games refer to and the one that starts in Time of Contempt and the books that follow).

Witcher 3 is unofficially a proper sequel to the Ciri saga. Really doesn't get more connected to the plot of the books than that.

If you mean that the three games aren't yet considered canonical, sure, ok.

@Jarrkha: If you mean that the three games aren't yet considered canonical, sure, ok.

Just that, even the author came out and said the games have little to do with his books and that they only existed in the same world. Wikipedia - reads the games were set in a prequel, (thought WH different) and were more akin to The Silmarillion then to the main LOTR novels.

My comment above was that the tv review above was slanted that the TV show should have either followed the books by the original author and or the video games. Much like the The Fall of Gondolin, or star treks, or star wars or dune, IPs, it lives in that universe but not bound to the main plot. Can it not be reviewed for what it is.

The video games are set in the world of the Witcher books but are not a telling of the them or even a retelling.

@jenovaschilld: Alright I see your point.

Let's talk about the Netflix show, though: it is a retelling of the core Witcher story. The narrative and plot elements (the details) change, sure, as is expected for a retelling.

But like varying a known recipe, the new variation's particular elements either work or they don't... and I think some of the show's particular takes on the Witcher major plot points doesn't work that well... yet. Sophomore seasons usually make or a show as anticipated as this.

The show brought me back. Wanting to OCD it one more time. And its been long enough now that I could do another play through having forgotten about most of the side quests anyway.

@KoRniTo: It's a mediocre game but a very great story , if you care about gameplay and mechanics this game won't even score a 5/10.

@off3nc3: Gameplay incorporates story elements in these games. So your statement is indicative of an old misunderstanding of the concept of game design and actuality, and needs to be addressed.

Think of gameplay as the core -- the heart, and brain -- of a game. All systems and design flow outwards and into it.

As Witcher 3 successfully challenges and iterates on others of its genre -- and has since likely strongly influenced games afterwards in the last five years almost -- and is accessible to even reluctant RPG players like myself, one would be hard-pressed to make a claim like yours. And such a claim just wouldn't hold up for a new player coming into a game, based on your POV... unless ofc they were exactly like you.

TBH, I'm all up for going against the grain and popular thought. I actually don't advocate story above all other things, don't like excessive dialogue and cutscenes, shy away from 100+ hour games now (don't have time or the attention), I think Witcher 1's mechanics have not aged well and its combat system was always unequivocally bad... and I am still advocating in favour of Witcher 3. What does that tell you?

@Jarrkha:

What does that tell me ? Nothing really , gameplay is the core element of a game being fun , hence why we grew up with Mario and to this day we still play it , if the mechanics are not fun then you are left with a game like Death Stranding which was the biggest flop ( not in sales unfortunately ) of the decade.

TW3 has great voice acting , music , scenery an amazing story but the gameplay is missing to say the least so without this component how can people call it the game of a generation ? I mean YOU can but that kinda leaves you with little to no experience in gaming for such a statement.

I have 28 years of video games under my belt ( not a brag ) so for me I will always look at the gameplay/mechanics then graphics , story etc. Witcher 1 was the best in the series and most of the true witcher fans will agree , a game doesn't need 10-15 minutes of cutscenes or 100 markers on the minimap , less is more sometimes , the fighting animations are an endless recycled jump/slash move outside of the SIGN use it's rediculous that you end up repeating the same 2 animations over and over , the character feels floaty and no ammount of mods will fix that.

If you like it props to you , but im kinda tired of the praise it still gets for being such a flawed game so let's just agree to disagree on this one.

My responses will be in non-itallicised text:

That's a shame, because the implication I made there is that I am the skeptic (and sometimes naysayer) advocating in favour of a much overplayed genre. I mean, I was tired soon after Skyrim came out... years ago. lol. I managed to stretch my playtime for OW RPG games to 2015 and didn't try Witcher 3 until Xmas 2017 and the winter of 2018, two years ago, and by then I was juggling things and dropping them left right and centre. Zelda BOTW made me drop Witcher 3 for a while, too.

TW3 has great voice acting , music , scenery an amazing story but the gameplay is missing to say the least so without this component how can people call it the game of a generation ? I mean YOU can but that kinda leaves you with little to no experience in gaming for such a statement.

I don't call it the game of the generation. I don't call any game that, especially when they still have distinct "genres" even in age of hybridization. I won't even have a game of the decade (and to me the decade doesn't end until NYE 2020 anyway). "Generations" and decades are far too long in this day and age to reasonably compare iterative or revolutionary games to each other.

Witcher 3 isn't perfect: I am NOT fond of the L-trigger parry system for one thing nor the fact that you cannot haggle prices if you decide to pick up a contract without talking to quest-givers first; also not fond of how they visualized or characterized some of the mages; wanted more enemy types; wanted more economical ways to salvage and repair equipment, etc.; wanted a Witcher-1 level of immersion for alchemy. You can mod the game on PC to make it as close to your level of "perfection" as possible, BUT... I don't have time and such to go through mod lists and test 'em and whatnot anymore.

Yes I have about 28-29 years as well, counting from when I was ~4 (as far back as I can remember playing on NES and PC) to now. I'll be 33 in a month. Ugh. Why, God?

I don't think the game is inundated with information. I've seen worse, and I've seen games that needed more. However in a post-BOTW age, I agree. Less is more. BOTW is not the best "minimalist" design I've seen, but it doesn't need to be. It's quite effective and its whole design allowed me to define my own challenge.

Witcher 3 doesn't do that, but to me it is sufficiently fine and that "fineness", despite its flaws, is in the same spirit of BOTW. I think people really fixate on Witcher 3 because it came in an age where consumers were getting gobsmacked with bad industry practises (especially monetization), and this game was a breath of fresh air.

Also, its underwater stuff ain't bad. There's an old saying that goes like this: "if a game has underwater levels, they're bad."

If you like it props to you , but im kinda tired of the praise it still gets for being such a flawed game so let's just agree to disagree on this one.

Yes, ofc. I don't blame you for your view either. I'm just allowing you to pick my brain since we seem to be similar. I get tired of undue praise and sycophanty as well -- for example, I don't consider all of Kojima's work to be godlike, and I didn't think Dad Of War was the best (action) game of 2018, and I like multiplayer and even always-online stuff... I face uphill battles all the time. The Outer Worlds doesn't hold my interest for more than an hour at a time, and everybody was blowing loads over it before it came out.

I get it.

@5tu88sy: Give it another go on STORY mode and enjoy the "tale" it's the same mechanics as on Death March just less ballet as it's the same jump strike animation over and over again for 100 hours.

Please do not over-paraphrase reviews. Using a whole bunch of smart adjectives, superlatives and metaphors and such in a snippet doesn't say much to us. At the end of the day, from our POV, we and you either like a game or we don't -- regardless of what element we fixate on (other than gameplay ofc), and any other higher concerns (like what the game would mean to the industry and it's franchise; it's supposed and actual impact).

The overuse of such language in the entirety of a review also isn't good for us as much as you'd think; it doesn't necessarily make the written article more readable. Thus, trying to shorten it with what I call "anti-prosaic" tone and style might not do your work any favours (by anti-prosaic I mean not necessarily poetic, but definitely not straightforward, blunt, etc prose).

All that being said, I've been playing Witcher 3 more and more since late last week, including Sunday, and my urge was partly influenced by the show and partly by my online peers. On Sunday one online "friend" even started playing after I was; perhaps he was influenced too.

I'm pretty sure a lot of the players had already bought the game a LONG LONG time ago and just had it sleeping in their backlog and didn't care to play it yet cause they were too busy playing lots of other AAA.

That's what happened to me too!
I bought The Witcher 3 when they released the "Complete Edition" or whatever they call it but never played beyond first 20~30 mins!

I gave the game a try, was amazed but told myself :"This game looks HUGE and I'm not quite ready to jump in it at the moment!"

Games like the Witcher 3 and GTA V of course sell themselves on the PC, and these are two heavy hitters on the modding scene which keeps 4 and 5 year old games like these selling big even today. Developers seem to encourage modding their games and even show support with modding tools.

The Witcher TV Show probably didn't hurt either.

@sakaixx: Take it easy yo. It is a game from five years ago and has the same number of concurrent players as Red Dead Redemption 2 on Steam. Pre netflix or not - it's the Witcher 3 we're talking about. Besides the PC version has always been the only worthy version to play anyway. Playing it on any other platform is like.... settling.

@lonesamurai00: It's TV show effect + Steam sales. Unfortunately CDPR left modders with almost nothing. It's a shame if you compare this situation to TW2, when REDkit was released, really advanced tools.

@Vojtass: Yes, still goes to show that PC games go on to sell a lot of units way after the games release, like record sales and more than when the games released. I just hope that the game recently sold more copies on GOG as well - so that they may receive all of the revenue, and not just some. They really deserve it.

Where did you grab that from, and more importantly what does it even mean? Damn boy you have been following me across two separate articles geez! You're becoming friggin annoying really. All that I said was no thanks to Epic Games for the games - and I listed why I felt that way. I do have the right to feel that way about their efforts.

Now take their games, that's your choice and I have not made that any of my business, and I've said that before, but this time I will tell you to shove them you know where and GO AWAY!!!

That is what I see, what do you want me to think???

and you did reply to me, on two different articles - what do you want me to say???

The pertinent question here is why are you worried about what I type - worry about what you type, try that maybe. Why are you concerned with how I feel about a store - I mean you've traced me across two articles to discuss the same topic, must be an issue for you?

@gunnyninja: Uh huh... Well there's an easy way to mitigate that for future reference so - listen up. You know those Epic games articles about the games that they might give away, you know the ones c'mon stay with me here. If they do run an article on that again and I decide to comment, perhaps you should-

A. Ignore my comment(s) and resign yourself to your comments or to whomever else.

B. See my comment(s), shake your head in anger, but resist any urge to reply.

C. Stay away from any Epic free games articles to ensure that you won't see any of my comments at all on the subject, therefore removing any possibility of a reply.

Okay I'm opening the envelope, and the answer is (drumroll)...... tah dah! all of the above!!!

Now, we done here - hole?

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year...

@gunnyninja: I can promise you.... that won't happen. If another article about Epic games article pops up and I feel compelled to make a comment or form an opinion, I'm afraid that you are going to have to learn how to deal with it, because guess what - it is an opinion.

Now perhaps you could seek help for your anal-retentive tendencies, maybe that might help to ease your pain in the future, or at the very least keep you from developing (or prevent any further development of) a case of severe depression.

You see I think it's you who needs the help since it bothers you when someone comments on an article that resides on a message board/forum. This area of the website is intended for people to form an opinion and make a comment on a range of topics, especially when it is a current topic - like this one.

You should really seek to have that hair plucked, either that or come to the realization that you are in fact on the wrong website, discussing the wrong topics. Perhaps there is a psychiatric forum on the Johns Hopkins website that you could visit. Someone with more experience might give you the direction that has you so desperately crying out.

Bottom line above all is that you will have to learn to live with it because I may be on that next Epic game article since I can form my own opinions about that company.

@lonesamurai00: I kinda skimmed through some of that. I saw the word plucked again. Really don't even care anymore about you. Feel free to rant on...

@lonesamurai00: Surprisingly CD Projekt Group's market value is almost the same as Ubisoft's. Fvcking crazy!

@Vojtass: When Cyberpunk releases into the wild that statistic will change dramatically, and not in Ubisoft's favor. I mean take a look at Cyberpunk 2077, then take a gander at the upcoming Watch Dogs game set in London.

Ubi is shoveling more of the same BS with really the only change being the city and country. Cyberpunk 2077 is dramatically different, and will have mod support, just not at launch - bye bye Watch Doggie...
