The Witcher 3 Sold Better In Q1 2017 Than Same Period Last Year

Sales of the role-playing game rose year-over-year.

Polish game developer CD Projekt Red today announced financial results for the first quarter of 2017, showing an increase of 17 percent in total revenue to 99.3 million PLN.

Notably, CD Projekt Red's gaming division grew by 10 percent despite the fact that it didn't launch a new game. Additionally, the company's GOG division saw revenue jump by 63 percent.

The good times extended to profit as well, as the company made $45.3 million in net profit for the period, up by a healthy 40 percent compared to last year.

Helping the company is continued sales of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Notably, the game sold more copies in Q1 2017 than it did during the same period last year, CFO Piotr Nielubowicz said. Not only that but revenue from the game and its expansions rose year-over-year, despite price drops. Also boosting CD Projekt Red's bottom line during the period was Gwent, the free-to-play card game. According to the developer, it generated "tangible revenue." The game is now available on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 through an open beta.

CD Projekt Red also noted today that it invested 16 million PLN in Q1 2017 for the production of new titles, including Cyberpunk 2077 and Gwent.

For Gwent specifically, CD Projekt Red laid out some of its future plans for the game, including more marketing efforts to boost the game's visibility. A Chinese version of the game is also in the works, alongside support for other languages. The game is free, but the studio is also adding paid single-player campaigns in the future.

My only gripe is how the game looks worse than how it looked at E3. That shit looked like it was on a WHOLE new level atmospherically. Can't disagree with me on that.

I bought the game twice once for pc and once for Xbox1. Namely because my hubby had never played a witcher game watched me playing 3 decided he wanted to play, deciding it would cut into my witcher time boom I bought him a copy of it.

Game devs should take this as

"We should start making games, not season pass's"Here is looking at you Dice/EA with Battlefield and now Star Wars. Ubisoft you're getting the same way with your games. Bungie is doing this with Destiny 2. 343 with the milking of Halo plus who ever does Gears of war, don't worry a re re release will be out soon.

Rockstar is amazing on connecting with players and their games and so is CD Project Red with Witcher 3. I wonder how game companies sell out and release DLC games just to bring in the cash flow.

I cant think of a game series or publisher who deserves better credit and recognition than the guys who are behind the "wonderful" Witcher 3: Wild Hunt!! After recently picking up The Complete Edition and the wise investment in a copy of the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Special Edition, I have discovered new outcomes and ways to change the worlds events that previously were overlooked. So much thought and creative ideas form the meaningful journeys Geralt and friends endure. Gwent is another huge plus for the future!! Love your games Projekt Redd!! Thank you!! bring on witcher 4 plz!!!

@Jimbowesker: They're making cyberpunk 2077.

Ciri might end up being an easter egg or a side quest though due to her being in the world of it through her dimensional/time powers before the events of the witcher 3.

"Oh look, it's Kiefer Sutherland's polish cousin Piotr" was my first thought upon opening this page.

"Things are still going well, like they should with such great games" was my second thought.

I'm not particularly a fan of the game but do think it is good overall. In any case I love seeing single player games keep selling long after release.

I still haven't gotten around to even buying the game.

I probably need to spend the rest of this year clearing out my backlog.

@beantownsean: have you played the previous game? If not, I'd recommend a couple of things:
- first, if you can, try to get started on the books, chronologically (i.e., start w/ the book 'The Last Wish'. IMHO, it's an easy read, partly because it's an anthology). It'll help w/ appreciating the game/setting more, esp. if you get past the first book (as the games do reference a number of book events, more so in Witcher 3).
Some of the major characters in the Witcher 3 are barely mentioned, if at all, in the previous games, but are prominent in the books.
- second, well, play the 2nd game. :D
I think consensus is that playing the first game isn't necessary, although I did like it, overall. The combat wasn't great, and some things don't age well, but I thought it was a 'good' game. It does set the tone/atmosphere for the setting, but in terms of the overall story for the series, I don't recall it adding much.

It may seem like a bit much to do, esp. if one has a gaming (or other) backlog, but, IMHO, reading the books and getting through at least the 2nd game greatly enhances the experience of playing the last game.

@beantownsean: It's because I'm such a big fan of the Witcher that I haven't bought The Witcher 3. I don't have time right now to spend a few hundred hours utterly immersed in it. I'm also afraid of what it will do to my backlog reducing crusade, because every other game will seem so inferior afterwards.

I felt like that after Deus Ex: Human Revolution, so I know it can happen again and it would probably be a lot worse after playing through the GotY edition of The Witcher 3.

I finally went back to it and am at the very end now. I almost want to stop playing it again cuz I don't wanna beat it. Hopefully the dlc is the same thing and makes me feel like I didn't yet.....can you still do side quests from the base game while playing the expansions?

@michael-ibbett: You can keep doing the side quests even after beating the main quest. Both DLC expansions were Great, esp. Blood & Wine, which is almost like a full game in itself (esp. since I put down the game for a while after finishing the main quest, and a fair number of improvements were implemented by the time the last DLC came out).
I actually agree w/ those who gave Blood & Wine their 'Game of the Year' award.

I gotta second orbit991's suggestion: do Blood & Wine last.

@michael-ibbett: Yea the expansions are great with their own flavor and top notch stories you would expect, just do Blood and wine last as that one gives more of a wrap up to Geralt.

it's part of due to the price of the game. it's dirt cheap for a game this massive, and well developed. worth every cents. i will gladly buy any expansion they produced ( sadly that's almost impossible)

And every penny is well-earned and well-deserved. CDPR is the kind of developer that I want to support because of how well they treat their audience. Not just in delivering a stand out instant classic, but that they don't screw over fans with overpriced DLC. Hell, the free DLC that they released would've cost an arm and a leg from any other developer or publisher.

I don't think we'll see Cyberpunk 2077 for awhile, since it sounds like they're still in the early development stage, but I can't wait. Because of how well they've treated their customers, Cyberpunk 2077 might be a first-day buy or even pre-order for me. That's the kind of loyalty they EARNED from me.

This should help other devs understand that releasing a GOTY edition WITH stackable achievements/ trophys will see many, many gamers double-dip....I'm a fan of the practice as, while Witcher was far form a perfect game, it is still better than the vast majority of games released since.

I have completed this game 2 times.

With all the dlc's..

what a fantastic game.

When a rpg game makes you forget where you are and what time it is, its magic.

And when i'm done with fallout 4, i think i'm going for the 3 play through.

Thx CPR.

@ElDelBarrio: Just to clarify, Fallout 4 is an RPG, Witcher has RPG elements, but is an action game, similar to say Assassin's Creed. Simply having a fantasy setting does not make a game an RPG; it needs to have non-superficial character customization....in Witcher you are a Witcher....you kill humans with your steel sword and non-humans with your silver sword. Really enjoyed this game as well, but drives me batty when people think it's an RPG.

@Daelusca: there is this thing called action RPGs, u should check em out so that u know what to call a game like Witcher, Diablo or Dragon age for that matter, and most definitely Fallout 4 cuz that game is action RPG too. maybe you should expand ur meaning of the word roleplaying so that people don't drive u "batty". basically you are given a role and you get to choose as that role and there is a progression for that role as well, that is the core, u can play around with it, but not creating a character has nothing to do with not being an rpg, creating just adds something its not the rule, some would even argue that even those games don't respect ur choice as you are always given a mantle, like Hero of Ferelden or Inquisitor or Dragonborn, thats basically calling them Witchers!

@Daelusca: that's like saying a game such as persona 5 is not an RPG either? but it is... and so is every final fantasy sequel. the style of gameplay is irrelevant. if there are systems to develop and grow your characters by way of grinding and leveling up, obtaining new equipment, abilities and items -- with an emphasis on storytelling -- that makes it an RPG. something like zelda would be classified as an action game with RPG elements since you can't level up link.

@Daelusca: RPG is a vast family of games (family, not just one genre). There are many subgenres e.g. cRPG (I call it 'classic' Baldur's-Gate-style), action RPG, hack'n'slash, dungeon crawlers, MMORPGs. There are many differences between them, but they all belong to the family. Just because TW3 doesn't have character creation at the beginning, it doesn't mean the game doesn't belong to the family. World isn't black and white - you should understand that truth after playing TW3

@Daelusca: Fallout 4 barely has any depth to the RPG side and it's far more an action game than Witcher 3. F3/FNV were better RPGs (not as good in the action department, in my opinion) than F4 will ever be.

@Daelusca:

It is a RPG, it's what the entire gaming media and it's own developers call it, you could call it an action RPG if you want to, but no it's more of a RPG, it does everything the best games in the RPG genre do only better

God of War, Bayonetta, Devil May Cry those are action games

@Daelusca: did you enjoy the game?

Did you understand my point?

Then have a Coke and shut the f*ck up.

Ps. Any time you play game where you level up a character in a fantasy world, its gonna be an Rpg game for me..

I'am sorry that this bugs you but please dont make it my problem..

Now take you game label naziism and cravl back under your bridge.

Well, ofcourse, they have a GOTY for all platforms with all updates and DLCs included for a reasonable price that even pirates would be interested to buy it.

I once had a pirated copy on my PC, but when I saw that GOTY edition for PS4 costed less (physical copy) then the digital copy for a PC, I bought it. No regrets. The game is good.

Just beat Witcher 3 for the first time 2 days ago and just finished Heart of Stone today. I Cant believe i waited this long to play it. Absolutely amazing and you can tell they really cared about the quality of the game with all the small details put in the game. Also, it still looks better than any game I have played even at 2 years old. Only thing I would complain about is 2 years after release there are still a ton of glitches. I can't finish a HoS quest because its not showing being completed even though I opened the chest.
