The Witcher TV Series In Development For Netflix

Bewitching.

The Witcher is being adapted into a TV series for Netflix, with Platige Image--a production company that worked on the video game series--involved in its creation.

The series looks to be based on the eight-part novel series written by Andrzej Sapkowski, instead of the games. Sapkowski will be working on the English language drama series as a creative consultant.

Now Playing: GS News Update: The Witcher TV Series In Development For Netflix

"Andrzej Sapkowski has created a rich and memorable world, at once magical and familiar," said Erik Barmack, Netflix's vice president of international series. "We couldn't be more excited about bringing The Witcher saga to Netflix members around the world."

Sapkowski added: "I'm thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over 30 years writing. I'm excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life."

Sean Daniel (The Mummy franchise, The Expanse) and Jason Brown (The Expanse) are executive producers on the project. From Platige, Tomek Baginski, who has worked on Oscar nominated short The Cathedral, and Jarek Sawko, will be contributing to the series.

Platige worked alongside developer CD Projekt RED on the cinematics for The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf, The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

"The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world," explained Daniel and Brown. "The characters are original, funny, and constantly surprising, and we can't wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling."

Baginiski and Sawko continued: "There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre. It is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and the hero inside all of our hearts."

The Witcher video game series, meanwhile, has come to an end, for now. Developer CD Projekt RED initially said the third game would be the last in the series. However, following the widespread critical and commercial success of the title, it has softened on the idea of returning to the franchise.

In March studio executives said that the series was conceived as a trilogy, making a fourth game in protagonist Geralt's story difficult. However, a new game wasn't impossible. The Witcher franchise has now reached 25 million units sold across the trilogy. CD Projekt RED is currently working on Cyberpunk 2077.

Okay, now anticipating that Geralt will be played by Will Smith, Yennifer will played by Jennifer Lopez, Triss will be played by Selena Gomez, and Ciri will be played by Amy Schumer.

@Renunciation: OMG I would be so upset. I hate all of those people and the idea of them ruining the Witcher makes my stomach turn. I am sure the casting will go better than that nightmare scenario.

The words "Netflix" and " series" makes me optimistic. This will mean that the maturity level and details will likely not be dumbed down beyond recognition...I hope.

I'm cautiously optimistic if they do it right, all about the budget and cast.

It seems that a few people didn't actually read the article; the series will be based on the 8 Witcher books, therefore will have nothing to do with the CD projekt red's storylines, so it would be a book adaptation, much like game of thrones, and not a game adaptation. If you've read the books you already know the potential of a good tv series, and if youdid not read them, you're in for a treat!

Could be really good or really bad, but not in between. It will all depend on the budget and quality of actors they can get.

My ideal casting would be:

Geralt - Bradley Cooper

Triss - Emma Stone

Yennefer - Jennifer Lawrence

Ciri - Scarlett Johansson

Eskell - Matthew McConaughey

@alexander_mark: would REALLY love to see Eva Green in there as Yennefer... She doens't have the exact right look, but her acting... SHE PERFECT

and... Chloë Grace Moretz as Ciri is actually kind of perfect... she has the looks AND the "crazy little girl" feel about her

@LordCrisp:

In the books Ciri does not come off as crazy, I think they need to find a young unknown teenager to play the part.

Geralt will be hard to cast, he has to be able to play a real hard ass, he has to be handsome without being cute.

Dandelion has to have someone who is likable and hateable at the same time, but whoever they pick needs to have a good sense of humor.

@alexander_mark: Gerald isn't supposed to look young and "pretty boy"... he's an older looking, gritty handsome man. Mads Mikkelsen, Viggo Mortensen kind of actors could do this part well, but definatly open to suggenstion... both of them have that dark sarcasm feel about them too....

And Emma as Triss? Really...? Actually I don't agree with any of these suggestions... they're all too young for these roles....

Maybe Kate Beckinsale would look perfect for Yennifer, but not sure... her acting isn't that amazing.

And Scarlett is too old to be Ciri... especially in the books... she's early to mid teen throughout the books.

Honestly.... I would rather see some new faces to all the roles... so we don't have ANY other characters "behind our eyes" when it starts, so we can really get sold on them being the characters. As long as their doing a good job at acting of course....

REALLY hope this goes well... love everything Witcher... except for the Polish TV stuff, of course

@alexander_mark: sounds awful really, Emma Stone doesn't have any of Triss' sensuality and maturity, ScarJo is great but maybe a really young actress would be better and I'm super tired of Jennifer Lawrence playing older characters, looks nothing like her either. And that is a far too optimistic cast for show.

@Daian: Sensuality is literally one of the things that defines most sorceresses outside Nilfgaard and compared to someone like Philippa, Triss is actually pretty tame. As for maturity, I'm pretty sure Triss in the books is portrayed as being like a sister to Ciri and as still having a girlish crush on Geralt so you might be exaggerating her maturity. Emma Stone could work. ScarJo is way too sensual and too old to play Ciri.

@freeryu:

Damon is too pretty to play Geralt. Besides most of the actors people are mentioning are movie actors, it is very hard to get top notch movie actors to commit to a TV series, it happens but no way you are going to fill a cast with them.

@nois3ykrick3t: Thankfully this is based on the book series which occurred before the games, so everything will be fresh and will not have to go through the conversion from game to movie that tends to end with a lackluster middle ground.

@nois3ykrick3t: We've really not seen a show that was a book series before it was a kick butt game become a T.V. show or movie before. Original author as creative consultant. Looks like a win to me.

Is there anything they're not gonna make into a show? Somehow I feel like this wouldn't be fun to watch. I'd rather play the game than watch it.

@mirage_so3: Well the books tell a very different story than the games do. And after reading some of the Witcher books, if they are done right, it is going to be an awesome show.

I am with you, I would rather play it then watch it but if done right it could be very entertaining. I read American Gods a few years back and when I heard Starz was making a TV series out of it I thought it would be tough to pull off. So far they have done a great job and I am rally enjoying the series. Hopefully they can bring Geralt and the Witcher world to life.

@sdzald: The thing for me is that games like the witcher are a very interactive experience. You can choose different dialogue options or make different choices about how the game proceeds. It would be different if it were something like final fantasy which has a set story that you can't change.

@rolento25: Missed my point. What was fun for me was how the story was interactive in the video game. I would rather play the game and experience the story that way. Whether or not the story is based on a book doesn't mean anything.

Smart ass.

@mirage_so3: But what you'll get with this is a series that will focus on the background from the games. Remember the awesome cinematics at the beginning of each of the games. Those were actual short stories that we will be able to see in live action. If you've read the stories they are very active and cinematic to begin with so making it an interesting series should not be hard, as long as the budget holds out.

@mirage_so3: you can't make any choices in the books... and since it's like that... those stories are pretty linear.

And since the series is based on the books... maybe they'll be able to capture that exact feeling of... linearity...

@LordCrisp: The games have choices you can make that have an impact on the story unlike games like final fantasy. I think I would prefer to experience the story through a video game where I could interact with rather than simply watch the story. Has nothing to do with whether or not the game is based on a book.

@immortality20: 1. Ciri isnt a real witcher - no mutations, meaning her physical attributes like speed, reflexes and resistances are that of a normal human.
2. Her powers of space and time manipulation are imo too OP to fit into a good story.
