The Witcher's Author Doesn't Make Any Money Off Witcher Game Sales

Whoops.

Andrzej Sapkowski, author of the Witcher novels upon which the popular game series is based, doesn't make any money when you buy a copy of one of the games. That's not because of any malfeasance on developer CD Projekt Red's part, but because Sapkowski opted for an upfront payment when he was originally presented with a deal.

Sapkowski recounted the dealmaking process in an interview with Eurogamer, saying CD Projekt Red "brought a big bag of money," which is all he was really asking for. "What I expect from an adaptation: a big bag of money. That is all," he said.

However, the games have gone on to become far more successful than he (and likely CD Projekt Red) ever anticipated. "I was stupid enough to sell them rights to the whole bunch," he said. "They offered me a percentage of their profits. I said, 'No, there will be no profit at all--give me all my money right now! The whole amount.' It was stupid. I was stupid enough to leave everything in their hands because I didn't believe in their success. But who could foresee their success? I couldn't."

That said, he does acknowledge the quality of the games and believes the acclaim they've received is deserved.

"The game is made very well, and they merit all of the beneficiaries they get from it," he said. "They merit it. The game is very good, well done, well done."

No Caption Provided

Sapkowski went on to say that, while he doesn't play games, he doesn't have anything against them or those who do play them. The full interview is a delightful read and well worth a look at Eurogamer.

The Witcher 3 wrapped up the story of Geralt as far as the games are concerned. No further plans for Witcher games have been confirmed, with CD Projekt Red instead currently in the process of developing a new game, Cyberpunk 2077, that's due out in the next few years.

Man sucks for this guy. I remember a teacher in Jr. High telling the entire class that if you ever invent something and sell, always always always no matter what take a percentage over flat dollar amount. Good advice.

His books sales skyrocketed after the games came out. He profited plenty from his involvement with CD.

It's unfortunate but I understand why he did it, there really wasn't any way to know how much of a success these games could be before they were published. There was always a chance they would flop and he'd get nearly nothing.

That being said, I'm sure what he did get to sell the rights wasn't chump change either - it's just not as much as he could have made from royalties

@fyrant: They have not made a Harry Potter Twilight crossover yet. This should become an highly anticipated crossover.

That's a shame, he would have made so much more well deserved money. I've bought all his books but one because of the games, thankfully I imagine that's what many others player did as well so he at least profits from that!

Well at least he got that money upfront. Nobody expect witcher series to be a success either. Witcher 1 was bit buggy on release and pretty underated, witcher 2 is where the series finally get proper notice.

What he did makes sense. CD Projekt Red admitted they didn't know how to make a game and they had never done so before. Their only experience was porting English RPGs to Polish. If I was him I probably would have done the same thing, who could forsee them making 3 great games and a huge franchise that is now known worldwide?

It sucks for Andrezj, but at least he is earning money from all those who are buying the books as a result of playing the games.

It would be easy for me to say the guy is an idiot today after TW3 but at the time this deal was made the first Witcher game wasn't in production yet and CDProjekt Red wasn't a well known company...

The lore of the witcher is terrible. CDProjekt behind any license would do mega anyway. The fact that CD was able to be successful with such terrible material is amazing.

Well, that's what happens when you get greedy, you make idiotic decisions because you're too blinded by the money that's right in front of you to consider all the money that could be just over the horizon if you're patient and clever enough to earn it.

Seriously, the fact that CD Projekt Red was capable of coming up with that lump sum should have been adequate indication that they were serious/passionate about adapting his work into a video game series rather than just some scam artists or fly-by-night wannabe game designers looking to turn a quick profit, ergo he should have just rolled the dice on them.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: yes, but like he said, at the time this was a game that hadn't launched, before gaming even really exploded into what it is today, and by a developer that hadnt gotten big yet either. Like he said it was very hard to predict how well the franchise was going to do. This turned around to bite him in the ass but he played the safe route

Well that's clearly his fault. Everyone pretty much knew the Witcher games, especially 3, were shaping up to be big games. I don't know why he wanted upfront cash just like that. Did he really think the games would sell that bad?

@xenomorphalien: He sold all of his novels rights when Witcher 1 was about to be made so I think he wouldn't anticipate about Witcher 3 successes because you know there wasn't any plan about making Witcher 3 back then.

@xenomorphalien: This was all the way back before the first Witcher was made. CDProjekt were not very well-known, and I think it was completely reasonable to guess that the game wouldn't make much money, if any at all.

He's not getting any money from the game sales, but he's probably getting the best freaking publicity campaign there can be for his books, which must have started to sell like warm bread in the last few years.

Hey, has anybody noticed that in the original article Sapkowski says he will write another Witcher novel and, this week also, CD Projekt's CEO Adam Kicinski has declared that "It wouldn't be fair towards the fans" not to do another Witcher game?

Interesting... :)

The reference to the original Sapkowski interview is at the end of this article: Eurogamer

The reference to CD project CEO's declaration is here at Gamespot, for instance.

@benitox: This universe has great potential. In the future they can make another cRPG with player-defined hero set in the times, when witchers were more common, when Kaer Morhen was a mighty headquarters of the Wolf School. I have a feeling that games about Geralt only scratched the surface.

I think in the original article they also said a movie was coming. I hope that doesnt suck.

If he politely asked CD Projeckt Red for a little more kickback after the success, I bet they'd give him something. As long as it wasn't a ridiculous amount, of course. Both parties seem like a good bunch that it could happen.

Some times you need to believe in Polish people too! :D joke, but to be honest, who could possibly thought, what this polish company end up surpassing any major players in a field by quality, quantity and so on! They kind of in the same level as Rockstar now, you cant blame the guy, who could thought!

I like how honest the guy is hahah 'No, there will be no profit at all--give me all my money right now! The whole amount.'

Anyways, his books are pretty good. Haven't read them all yet (took a break after times of contempt), but I'll get back to them when I'll be in the mood again.

On the other hand, I was a bit disappointed in the games, even though they introduced me to the books basically (didn't even know The Witcher books existed before playing the first game). Managed to finish only TW2, 1 and 3 grew incredibly tedious to play after a while, so I dropped them (even though I was amazed at first by the world and some real quality side-quests like the Baron's in TW3).

@thequickshooter: I wouldn't say so. He had no guarantees that the game would ever make any money. Taking the payment upfront was a safer thing to do.

But yes, people are now buying his books at least.

though truth be told in 2007 half a mil dollars is a LOT of money

he's mostly cool about it though he in his writing, still you can feel the regret if he knew that game series would skyrocket so much

@thequickshooter: I don't think it's being greedy. I would rather call it cautiousness and awarness of books popularity. which already were very popular in Poland, Czech and Russia. If you want to be successfull, you have to recognize own merits.
