The Witcher's Geralt of Rivia is coming to SoulCalibur VI as a playable character. It's a big deal because it's the first time the monster-slayer has been in a non-Witcher game. Now, Bandai Namco has released a new video featuring CD Projekt Red developers talking about bringing Geralt to a fighting game and the efforts the studio has undertaken alongside Bandai Namco to ensure that Geralt "moves, feels, and plays" in SoulCalibur VI like he does in The Witcher 3.

"When Geralt fights, precision is the thing. He's not a scrappy brawler. He's like a scalpel in combat," CD Projekt Red's Borys Pugacz Muraszkiewicz said.

Elsewhere in the video, other developers talk about how they went "back to the drawing board" to re-work how Geralt behaves in the context of a fighting game. Additionally, we learn that the actor who did the motion-capture for Geralt in The Witcher 3 came back to supervise the recording sessions for SoulCalibur VI. It sounds like the teams went to great lengths to ensure that Geralt was faithfully adapted for SoulCalibur VI--and he should be as he's on the game's cover.

CD Projekt Red's collaboration with Bandai Namco runs deep. The Polish studio shared the original Witcher 3 assets for Geralt's character model, animations, and weapons as part of their effort to ensure the character is faithfully represented.

Among the other characters confirmed for SoulCalibur VI are Ivy, Zasalamel, Kilik, Xianghua, Nightmare, and new addition Groh. The game does not yet have an exact release date, but it's due out for PS4, Xbox One, and PC sometime this year.

I played Geralt more like a flailing lumberjack axe than a scalpel but okay.

-"the studio has undertaken alongside Bandai Namco to ensure that Geralt "moves, feels, and plays" in SoulCalibur VI like he does in The Witcher 3."-

Is that a good thing?

;)

As much of a fan as I am of the Witcher 3 this has to be the first time I have heard anyone say anything positive about Geralt's movements.

@videogameninja: That's true. I bet Namco spruces him up a bit to bring him to par.

So is this going to be a proper Soul Calibur game then? As in before it got royally screwed up.

I was surprised and a tad... concerned, when i heard Geralt would be in a fighting game. It felt like selling out or diluting The Witcher series, somehow. However, I am a huge fan and admirer of CD Projekt Red, of their deep integrity and artistry. So I trusted/hoped all would be well. And here it seems my faith was well founded. The care and detailed work that has gone into this looks fantastic so far. The moves look “right” but also a bit special too. If they captured his personality as well... I might actually pick this, up even though I have little interest in fighting games, just to spend a little more time with Geralt, but in a different setting. Quite brilliant of them.
