There's A New Pokemon Card Type, And It Looks Extremely Powerful
Pikachu and Zekrom are the first pair.
At the 2018 Pokemon World Championships in Nashville, Tennessee, the company debuted a new type of Pokemon card. Called Tag Team Pokemon-GX, the cards will feature duos of Pokemon for incredibly powerful moves and high HP. The crowd at the event, which includes competitive and pro-level trading card game players, was noticeably excited about the card.
So far, only one Tag Team card has been revealed: Pikachu & Zekrom-GX. It has 240 HP and two powerful attacks that deal 150 and 200 damage respectively; if certain conditions are met, it can also deal 170 damage to benched Pokemon. When the card is knocked out, the opponent takes three prize cards (as opposed to two for normal GX cards). You can check out Pikachu & Zekrom-GX below.
There will be other Tag Team cards, though the company did not say how many. The regular GX cards were first announced at the Pokemon World Championships in 2016 and debuted in the Sun & Moon expansion for the TCG; there are over 100 currently.
The Pokemon World Championships are being held through midday PT Sunday, August 26. If you want to watch the competitive video game, we've rounded up everything you need to know about this year's meta. For more on Pokemon cards, check out our feature on how Pokemon cards are made.
