This Is How Oculus Rift "Exclusives" Can Run on HTC Vive

Lucky's Tale and Oculus Dreamdeck can now work with Vive, thanks to third-party software.

If you own a Vive and wish you could play the Oculus Rift's exclusive games and demos, then new third-party software might be able to help you. The "Revive" software allows users to play platformer Lucky's Tale and the Oculus Dreamdeck on HTC's headset.

Reddit user CrossVR shared the files on Github. Revive works as a compatibility layer between Oculus SDK and OpenVR, the development platforms for the Rift and Vive respectively. If it works as advertised, it means Oculus exclusive games can be played on the Vive.

"It works by reimplementing functions from the Oculus Runtime and translating them to OpenVR calls," the description on Github reads. "Unfortunately Oculus has implemented a Code Signing check on the Runtime DLLs, therefore the Revive DLLs cannot be used unless the application is patched."

Experiences seem to vary among Reddit users, some saying it works great, while others receive error messages. PC Gamer says it's experienced slight input lag and frame rate drops while playing Lucky's Tale. CrossVR says the software is currently an alpha version and will fix any issues that are found.

"I'll keep working on ironing out any issues people run into," they said. "[T]his is version 0.2 and there will be many more as there is still plenty of work to do."

CrossVR also said that it might already work with other Oculus games and demos, but they've only tested Lucky's Tale and Dreamdeck.

"It's still early days for this project, since it's only been in development for a few weeks," they said. "In the future more games will be supported, but I'm glad to see such swift progress already."

You can check out the Revive files for yourself right here.

Exclusives on a headset made for PC.... The F**K is going on. A platform within a platform WTF.

I thought the whole point of VR was that all VR headsets would be compatible with VR games. Well thats put VR on the bottom of my list.

There shouldn't be exclusives in the first place... they should just be "VR" games just like there are "PC" games (ie it doesn't matter if you have a DELL coputer or Alienware or VIAO etc).

Well, good to give problems ti companies trying to make Pc games "exclusive"
Bad to see GameSpot promoting the use of hacks into hardware, I though the website was against, piracy in general :P

I think this is actually a good thing. Maybe now all those Vive owners will be educated about the fact that it is actually possible to have great VR experiences without doing full room-scale and motion control all the time, and in some cases it 's actually better being seated and using a gamepad.

@wtf_666: Apart from some shipping issues, I'm not seeing the same thing you're seeing. Most reviews have been extremely positive. The software is generally pretty cool, and if you're not a spoiled journalist that's maybe been playing these games for a year or two in VR at the point, they've still got the VR wow factor. Touch isn't even out for Rift yet. PSVR hasn't even launched. We're only a couple of weeks in. There's still plenty of new games and experiences in line for the rest of the year. Hollywood studios are just starting to jump onboard. Major players like Apple and Google have apparently got VR hardware in the works. All of the headset pre-orders sold out and a back-ordered for a few months still. Most of the launch games still haven't even been fully reviewed. IGN just opened up a YouTube VR channel. Facebook hasn't even started putting its full social media weight behind Rift yet. . . .

I think you're very much looking at things differently to most other people.

@wtf_666: But they're PC devices. Games will come. People won't just forget about it because PC isn't going anywhere, so VR isn't going anywhere.

I thought the software for these headsets was supposed to cross compatible (to at least some degree) to help get the industry off the ground. So much for that I guess.

@o311rocks: Most companies are going to want that closed platform so they can lock people in, get a cut of every game sale, etc. etc., it's really no surprise. Like Bleszinski said way back about the Oculus, it shouldn't be "just a peripheral, ugh" :) I love using that quote because it shows you what the industry really wants, they don't want to usher in a time of new gaming experiences and blah blah, they just want to "own" the space of next big thing.

Wait, VR headsets have exclusive games? so basically nobody learned a damn thing from consoles and the current structure of the gaming industry? lol whatever, VR sucks at its current state anyway.

@davillain-: I tried a Minecraft demo at a game convention in my town last year with oculus rift, the tech was impressive, but ultimately too gimmicky for comfortable living room gaming, this would be better applicable in arcades or amusement parks, and the hefty price tag doesn't help its case either.
