Thor: Love & Thunder "Almost" Shouldn't Be Made, Director Taika Waititi Says

Taika Waititi's upcoming Thor sequel "shouldn't make sense," the director says.

Thor: Ragnarok was radically different from the two Thor films it followed. Director Taika Waititi is returning to the character for 2022's Thor: Love & Thunder, for which he recently wrapped shooting, but don't expect it to be just more of the same, the director said in an interview with Empire magazine.

"Well, just between (me and) you and the readers, I've done some crazy s*** in my life. I've lived like ten lifetimes," Waititi told Empire. "But it's the craziest film I've ever done."

Now Playing: Thor: Ragnarok Video Review!

It's crazy in the "it shouldn't work, but does" sense, according to Waititi.

"If you wrote down all the elements of this film, it shouldn't make sense. It's almost like it shouldn't be made. If you walked into a room and said, 'I want this and this and this' Who's in it? These people. What are you going to call it? Love and Thunder. I mean, you'd never work again. Maybe I won't after this."

What can we expect from the film?

"There'll be a lot more emotion in the film," Waititi said before going into detail. "And a lot more love. And a lot more thunder. And a lot more Thor, if you've seen the photos [of Hemsworth's bulked-up look]."

From a bird's-eye-view, Waititi isn't wrong. The film has Chris Hemsworth returning as Thor, of course, along with Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, but Natalie Portman will once again appear as Jane Foster, who will ultimately wield Mjolnir and become Thor herself. Christian Bale is playing Gorr the God Butcher, and Russell Crowe will appear as Zeus, possibly as a small cameo. Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt and Karen Gillan are confirmed to appear, and we're expecting to see others as well. Even the "actor" versions of the characters are making an appearance--Luke Hemsworth, Matt Damon, and Sam Neill return as "actor" Thor, Loki, and Odin, with Melissa McCarthy joining as "actor" Hela.

Thor: Love & Thunder his theaters on May 6, 2022.

For starters, Thor should become the embodiment of brute strength… no more constantly getting his ass kicked by lesser deities. After some cinematic build up and steadily paced anticipation, he should be smiting everything his path. Secondly, Loki shouldn’t be so soft. Of course, he’s an obnoxious child at times but where the maniacal jester who inspired modern agents of chaos such as DC’s Joker or FF6’s Kefka. Third, Odin should be a strategic genius, using Loki and Thor to his advantage. Fourth thing I would like rectified are the events or Ragnarök. Why stray away from the original epic to create something so much weaker, softer and so much less imaginative and just a whole lot worse than actual Ragnarök. My fifth point: Where was Frey? Where was Freja? Where were Loki’s children? Where were Thor’s sons?

After the garbage that was The Dark World, Ragnorrok shouldn't have been made either, but Marvel continues to churn out these garbage Thor movies as they did with two garbage Iron Man sequels...

@shogunswitcher: The MCU didn't do this, Marvel did, and they did it decades ago. So did DC, who also adapted mythological figures into comic book characters. The MCU is just adapting these characters into their films. Also consider, the worship of these mythological figures died down a long time ago. There may be some who still worship these figures, but the majority of the world does not, unlike, say, Muhammed and Allah (who is really just God anyway).

@Pierce_Sparrow: “Who is really just God anyway.” Which one? Jehovah? Yahweh? Buddha, possibly?

Muhammad was a warlord who actually existed. He created the Muslim religion and destroyed the Byzantine Empire.

Muhammad can be more accurately contributed to the fictional antichrist from Revelation as he literally believed he would march an army of Hell’s demons into Europe.

Of course, nearly all of it is fiction but it’s also so much more than that. We’re talking about a cultural touchstone here. Your country has never practiced he hearth and simply doesn’t understand it’s relevance to our culture. It’s Hollywood imperial expansion at the end of the day, desecrating mythology and replacing it with something childish, watered down and meaningless.

@shogunswitcher: To be fair. MCU did not turn them into goofy cartoon characters. Marvel comics did that 60 years ago.

And I think it's more comparable to the way popculture use Greek and Romans gods then if they used Allah. But I get what you mean.

@i2eaper0f5ouls: Then you don’t understand the word “persecution”. The family I moved into is predominantly Viking. This is what Disney and Hollywood generally do with other cultures and their stories. We’re talking about heritage here, something America are insensitive about because they only have 300 yr old history so what do they know about heritage?

@shogunswitcher: If you read through his post again, he’s saying he’s not here to persecute. That’s entirely different to how you’ve interpreted it. He went into this discussion wanting to leave persecution out of this and therefore didn’t want anybody to get the wrong idea. I guess that flew over your head and believed it to be some sort of accusation, which I think is really silly.

I've been saying that Ragnarok should have been the end of the line for a few reasons:

* The other phase 3's stopped at the third movie.

* Thor should end on a high note with a very successful last film.

* Natalie Portman has often been confused with a 2 x 4 from Home Depot while acting.

* Movies as a whole shouldn't be made to simply appease one specific group of society.

* As mentioned before, you had a hit with the third film, don't screw things up with this proposed train wreck. Phase 4 will have many disasters to choose from.

So, in conclusion. Stop...just stop.

@lkk102466: You know, except for

*the ones that didn't.

*should it? Marvel's about putting out movies people enjoy. People enjoyed the last one. They enjoyed the last two avengers movies. They wanna see where it goes.

*the people who gave her awards for best performance...

*again, people enjoy these movies. You don't wanna watch? That's fine. They'll keep making stadiums filled with money without you.

*The only two phase 4 movies that have come out were Spider Man and Black Widow, both of which were- at the very least, good. They weren't masterworks of cinema, but they weren't going for that.

In conclusion, stop acting like you, and the rest of the minority are the end-all-be-all, and get over yourself. :)

@i2eaper0f5ouls: “*the ones that didn't.”

Not yet anyway.

“*should it? Marvel's about putting out movies people enjoy. People enjoyed the last one. They enjoyed the last two avengers movies. They wanna see where it goes.”

Yes, franchises should be looked upon fondly rather than see them tarnished by an attempt to tick boxes for the Twitter mob.

“*the people who gave her awards for best performance...”

They were meant to give the award to a 2 x 4 Home Depot?

“*again, people enjoy these movies. You don't wanna watch? That's fine. They'll keep making stadiums filled with money without you.”

Or not. If the MCU is in decline then that can only be temporary.

“*The only two phase 4 movies that have come out were Spider Man and Black Widow, both of which were- at the very least, good. They weren't masterworks of cinema, but they weren't going for that.”

That’s because they’re focusing on shows more than movies now. And they’re worse. Significantly worse.

“In conclusion, stop acting like you, and the rest of the minority are the end-all-be-all, and get over yourself. :)”

How about you stop being dictatorial towards minorities?

It almost shouldn’t be made? I wholeheartedly agree with you, bro. 👊

Thor is literally a man’s name. It’s not a mantle. It’s his name. You wouldn’t name your daughter Barry or Gordon.

@Pierce_Sparrow: Marvel did pull it out of their arse, back in 2014, ignorant of the fact that Thor is a man’s name. Literally. Then everybody laughs when they see petite Natalie Portman holding up Mjolnir and showing everyone her bicep. It’s incredibly forced.

First off - I have read a lot of comics....... a LOT OF COMICS, way ..... too many.

When it comes to comic stories, the art form, the powerful literature that is in any form!!- then the 100 + yrs of and tens of thousands of comic IPs written -is some of mankind's greatest works. THOR however.... is not really one of them. But when Thor is at its best, it is wild and fun. Graphics novels like the Sandman, Marvels, Sin City, and 300 explore the human condition and expand the mind through their amazing plots. Thor was never one of them, but dang were they ever fun. Like Conan the Barbarian, and Hulk, a serious expansive plot was not as interesting as Thor standing on an alien ship smiling up at the sky with his hammer held high, while raindrops came down at the speed of bullets.

Was Thor: Ragnarok an Oscar winning movie... NO, but it was a great fun movie movie. And hopefully love and thunder has that 70s Bowie, rock and roll, heavy metal, balls to the walls, fun action movie that we, that everyone, could use post pandemic.

-------------

I got to read a wealth of comics from my uncle and cousin who were avid collectors as well. I also read the almanacs (large novels that contained 3-4 years worth of comics in one large book) like F4, Batmans, X-Men, etc starting at their very first 1. We were not allowed any new tv shows, but if we made good grades, at least I was allowed to go through milkcrate after milkcrates of comics.

@Decoy77: As in life sometimes throw an bad, weird, good, unusual curves I feel this is one of them evem if it is in sci fi. Sometimes one has to think outside of the box as nothing goes straight forever as chaos is part of life on an human level. You can almost say it paradoxical at times. The movie might be okay and I like Thor even though sometimes he too macho for his own good.

@ender707: I imagine it's very much going to be its own story. It can't copy the comics because the majority of characters in place for the Jane Foster run don't exist any more. Malekith was the main antagonist. He's dead in the MCU. Odin is also dead. Freja doesn't exist. Warriors Three? Also dead.

@ender707: Yes, very much so. Long story short, Thor fights Nick Fury Sr on the moon (because comics) and during the fight, Fury says something to Thor. This causes him to drop Mjolnir...he then finds he can't pick it up. He's become unworthy. The hammer later calls out to someone who picks up the hammer and changes the enchantment on it.

"Whosoever holds this hammer, if she be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor"

We find out after the initial run it's Jane Foster, who's dying of cancer. She's taking chemo, but whenever she picks up the hammer the transformation purifies her body and removes the chemo. Being Thor is slowly killing her.

Throughut all of this the War of the Realms is happening as Malekith slowly takes over each realm in turn. During all of this a beast known as the Mangog is released and his only job is to destroy all gods. To save Asgard, Jane wraps the beast in chains attached to Mjolnir and hurls him into the sun, killing him, Mjolnir and Jane herself as she succumbs to cancer.

Odin and Thor bring her back from Valhalla where she returns to a normal life cancer free. She later finds a hammer from a dead universe's Thor and uses what little power is left in it to help Odinson defeat Malekith. The hammer breaks and fuses to her wrist to become Undrjarn the All-Weapon, giving her the powers of the Valkyrie.

Okay I failed at making a long story short...

@bloodbornelore: I don't read the comics, so idk the details, but this kind of stuff happens a lot. It's just another of hundreds of different stories. The comics tend to play loose with things like mythology. Hercules and Zeus are part of Marvel too. Thor has even fought Hercules

@bloodbornelore: It's not that serious. The comics have only ever done this for fun. It comes down, essentially, to "it would be fun to see Thor and Hercules fight" and then they create a situation within a story where that can happen. Marvel has always played loose with mythology. These are essentially fictional characters existing outside the mythology they were adapted from.

There probably is some kind of cosmology, but these worlds also often exist outside of one another. These characters finding one another is typically situational.

@Pierce_Sparrow: Why not have the Æsir lose Midgard to the Olympians so that they can fight on the same territory; a concept to appeal to the aspirations of these gods? A scenario of Thor fighting Hercules is a great idea but it needs gravitas. Marvel look for any excuse to write a “war”. We could have the tactical Æsir invade the ruling territory of the explosively powerful Olympians. Imagine Tyr, Loki and Forseti sneaking their way up Mount Olympus for a glorious battle in the heavens.

Thor having sex with his sister is a bit strange though, considering Valkyries are daughters of Odin.

@G2Megatron: The vast majority of viewers would definitely not agree with you on that one. Was it a GOOD movie in the cinema sense? Of course not. Very few superhero movies are. But, was it an entertaining movie, absolutely. If you expect more than that from MCU movies, you're living in your own crazy universe.

@bloodbornelore: I'm still not sure what you're trying to get at? That the majority of people in the world won't see the film? If that's the case, then yes, most of the world neither has access to these movies when they're released, nor will the nearly 8 billion people in the world all be seeing the film. Majority for movies often speaks strictly to the movie going audience in two categories: domestic and global. In the U.S., Marvel films are immensely enjoyed by a majority of movie going audiences, hence why they often make over $100 mil. in their lifetime, and often much more. I can really speak to global audiences besides box office numbers and audience ratings.
