THQ already planning Homefront 2

Publisher says cliff-hangers in upcoming game's single-player campaign will be picked up in downloadable content, ultimately leading to a full sequel.

Earlier this year, THQ revealed the next project from Kaos Studios, the military first-person shooter Homefront. Set in the near future, the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC game's hook is that it is set in the midst of a foreign invasion of the United States. While Homefront's premise lost some of its novelty in the wake of the recently released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2--which includes segments where players fight Russian soldiers on American soil--THQ's core gaming group head Danny Bilson isn't worried about its ability to compete.

Homefront imagines a North Korean invasion of the US in 2027.
Homefront imagines a North Korean invasion of the US in 2027.

During a presentation at the FBR Capital Markets 2009 Fall Investor Conference today, Bilson was asked how he plans to position Homefront against competition like the next Call of Duty and Medal of Honor games. In response, Bilson pointed to the game's narrative talent, as well as its multiplayer pedigree.

Bilson noted that Homefront developer Kaos was born from the ashes of Trauma Studios, maker of the popular Desert Combat mod for the World War II shooter Battlefield 1942. The group's first project for THQ, Frontlines: Fuel of War, was not a tremendous success in critical or commercial terms. However, Bilson chalked it up as "an incomplete experiment under pressure to ship" and reasserted his faith in Kaos to "build the best online battlefield."

Single-player action is also a concern of THQ's. To that end, Bilson also touted the involvement of filmmaker John Milius, who wrote and directed Red Dawn, a fictional account of the Soviet Union invading the US.

Homefront's story won't all be contained in the game itself. An online promotional campaign will dole out bits of Homefront's backstory in the weeks leading up to the game's release, Bilson said, adding that the single-player campaign mode is only a small part of the overall story.

"This is about a guy moving some fuel," Bilson. "That's what the single-player is about, to restart some vehicles and retake the Golden Gate Bridge. It's the beginning of a story. We're going to tell this like a serial, with cliff-hangers. And then we intend to continue the story in [downloadable content], until we go to Homefront 2."

Bilson said the downloadable content for the game will include a mix of single-player and multiplayer action.

"This is one of our big bets, I'll be honest," Bilson told investors. "People say, 'Why are you going into this Call of Duty space?' And it's because I know we can compete. I know we can compete."

Story is fun. Gameplay is not bad by any means, but it is just another shooter. And a five hour one at that. Bring on Portal 2 and Half-Life 3 - is Valve the only studio capable of making a quality single player campaign in an FPS?

Maybe they should spend some more time keeping their servers up & less time planning on how to make more money out of this second rate game!!

Some people paid $59.99 for this game...I used a $ 10 dollar credit from amazon.com from a previously purchased game so I saved 10 bucks and paid $47.99 for a game with very little replay value. The DLC had better be cheap or FREE!!! for this game to succeed in my opinion.Otherwise Homefront 2 won't stand a chance.

I really liked the campaign for the first one, I just wished the put more effort into the story line. I didn't feel as involved as they made it sound. Oh, and I managed to beat it in three hours, taking my time, so it needs to be longer too.

I feel concerned when a dev is already planning for a sequel when Homefront 1 is not even up to scratch.

North Korea wouldn't invade because HAARP would just hit them with earthquakes, tsunamis and other "natural" disasters

I have to agree with Hatiko, Game development takes years, that includes storyline. In MW2 there was a Russian invasion! Not north korean! What about World in Conflict? Turning Point: Fall of liberty?

Why is everyone saying that they are trying to be Call Of Duty. THQ obviously made this story before MW2 came out, and it isn't like THQ knew that Infinity Ward was going to have the US invaded. And you're all acting like MW2 was the first game where the US was invaded.

I agree with Tig1973. We shouldn´t have to sit and remember the good old days of buying a full game, they should just give us our money´s worth already. Besides, isn´t it ridiculous that they´re talking about DLC and part 2 even before part one hits the shelves? What about those crap graphics too? Maybe they should just make a sequel for Frontlines, with a better storyline, ´cause that multiplayer was pretty dang good

@PatchMaster Rainbow Six Vegas may have had a bad story throughout, but both games were great, and it definitely means something if a sequel is already planned when the first one hasn't been released yet.

Way to go THQ. Admit your game is incomplete and that you want people to pay extra for material that should be on the disk. AND that they're will be a sequel to finish the story that will most likely introduce nothing new, a la RS:Vegas2. Better hope the multiplayer is phenomenal.

Game looks cool. As long as it has MP & Co-Op all it will have to do is match the average length of a shooter & it will be better than MW 2 which took me 3 hrs to beat.

AMERRRICAAAAAAA FFUUUUUUUUUUU- It doesn't look that exciting, while the whole idea of america actually being invaded rather than america just invading everything else is still pretty new in terms of videogame story lines, I feel they just won't be able to get away from the modern warefare 2 already did it criticism.

If MW2 can get away with having an utterly stupid storyline such as Russia invading the U.S. (impossible) and then refer to it as "Modern Warfare," then Homefront 2 can pretty much do whatever story it wants. At least its not arrogant enough to call it "Modern Warfare."

DLC has just given devs more excuses to release unfinished /half-ass games, it's getting old now.

Lets wait and see how Homefront does first before a sequel. Look at the hype that was put into Frontlines then looked how it turned out. In addition they got some brass if they think that one game is going to be a solid competitor to Battlefield.

Maybe its because the US of A got so much national debt. Then they decide to invade Iraq a third time thus going totally bankrupt.. So now only hobos live there.. Doesn't sound like an unbelievable story to me :P

Well maybe in 2027 americas might has gone, and NK is powerful, I dunno how though. But basically its because NK is an easy bad guy to pick, as was russia for MW2. They wont pick china because now China is the darling of America, as its become a capitalist dreamland of mass cheap labour and investments, and has a ridiculously large market for american corpartion products e.g GM cars. And lets not forget all the money the Chinese handed over to the US during the recession. I was looking forward to a red dawn style invasion of the US coming to games but after seeing what Turning Point: Fall of Liberty was like, and then the fairly underwhelming MW2 american sections, I think that it isnt as interesting as I first though. I mean a boring FPS is a boring FPS, even if you do throw in a golden gate bridge backdrop. Even resistance 2 american backdrops werent all that. Maybe its mainly because American citys are just so over exposed to us everyday of our lives on tv and in movies, that they just lack impact when you see them in a game. resistance fom settings in Britain were far more interesting. Me being a mancunian, who would never of imagined a first party world wide sony ps3 launch game featuring a level in which you shoot aliens in Manchester cathedral, much less the ridiculous outcry that that caused lol.

Make a proper package with a full single-player experience and multiplayer, and then worry about DLC. Call of Duty offers a package as a game, if you want to compete you have to offer real value.
