THQ announces Red Faction: Battlegrounds

GDC Europe 2010: THQ Digital's creative director Don Whiteford shows off first footage of downloadable title, which is set to hit both PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Who Was There: THQ Digital's creative director Don Whiteford, who works at the company's Warrington office in the north of England. Prior to restructuring under the publisher, the studio was called Juice Games and was responsible for titles such as Juiced and Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights. As part of THQ Digital, the studio now works alongside other studios in Phoenix and Agoura in the USA and develops titles exclusively for online distribution.

THQ Digital's creative director Don Whiteford blows the lid off Red Faction: Battlegrounds.
THQ Digital's creative director Don Whiteford blows the lid off Red Faction: Battlegrounds.

What He Talked About: Whiteford's talk was titled "Rethinking a Studio for the Digital Space," with eight lessons for developers thinking of adopting a digital strategy. The seminar focused on juggling multiple projects and continual experimentation. "By the time you start one [game], you've got to figure out what your next two or three are," he said, adding, "we're subscribing to the fail fast model," in terms of trying new things.

However, the highlight of the session was the confirmation of a new Red Faction game, which the studio is working on, called Red Faction: Battlegrounds. The news confirmed rumours that were circling last week that THQ was prepping a downloadable title in the series. The new game will launch on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network, although no release date was given by Whiteford. However, he did show a video of an isometric arena combat game featuring mechs, tanks, and rovers. Whiteford also confirmed that the game will support local four-player games on the same screen and unlockable items for Red Faction: Armageddon.

While Red Faction: Battlegrounds may have been given the green light, Whiteford reminisced about titles from the studio that never saw the light of day. Split Shift was a racing game that aimed to push into the social space so that players could post challenges online. He also showed a trailer for Stormbirds, a "third-person shooter in the sky," and claimed that for the same price as the short CGI clip, the studio could have made an entire iPhone app. "We decided to start looking at some of the smaller channels […] our main focus is PSN, XBLA, Steam, and we're looking at the iPad," he said.

Whiteford also talked about the prototyping process at the studio, by which everyone in the company can submit game designs. "We've had ideas markets, where people come and pitch their ideas. We included everyone; admin staff as well," he boasted. It was this process that led to the studio building a PlayStation Move-like device at the same time Sony was doing the same thing. "No disrespect to the Sony designers, but it was quite easy to mock up [a Move controller]," he joked.

Takeaway: After a couple of abandoned projects, the THQ Digital Warrington team is now working on Red Faction: Battlegrounds for release on the PSN and XBLA. It will feed into Red Faction: Armageddon by offering unlockable items for the retail title.

@RyuRanVII I was specifically referring to THQ refusing to bring Red Faction: Battlegrounds to PC. I'm well aware of Retribution and Torchlight II. What are Microsoft's PC exclusive games? I missed both of those, unless Age of Empires Online was one of them.

@athenian29 What are you talking about? Microsoft announced two PC exclusive games today and nothing for the x360. THQ recently announced Warhammer 40.000: Retribution for the PC. EA announced The Sims Medieval and Darkspore. Runic announced Torchlight II recently. Ubisoft will announce Heroes of Might and Magic VI this week. And the develoepers aren't supporting the PC anymore... :P

As interesting as the ethics discussion might (or might not) be... This upcoming release reminds me of C&C: Sole Survivor, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Should be good popcorn fun.

@metalkid9 That's a pretty bold assumption that I steal. I don't steal music because I either pay for a track via ITunes or burned all my old CD's (yea, i'm old enough to remember when people bought CD's at a store) to my computer, or use a free radio. The point is, I don't steal and I don't intend to change the world nor do i pretend to be perfect, but i do know right from wrong and i know better than to steal something that isn't mine.

Slightly off topic, but why don't we see more PSN and XBLA titles ported over to the PSP? RF:B sounds like it should be fun, why not make it for the PSP as well? And while you are at it, bring over Shadow Complex, 'Splosion Man and Castle Crashers.

@RadicalToenail, ya that's pretty awesome still. If I ever get lucky I'll make sure to do that. I too have pre-ordered mafia 2 and dead rising 2. Good to know we have the same taste in games ;)

@metalkid9 Okay, it's clear to me now. But yeah, things have gotten a little tough. I have to force myself to limit what I want. There are only two major games that I'm looking at for this year that I want for sure, but I really want many more. Mafia II and Dead Rising 2. Thank goodness Dead Rising 2 is $40 for PC.

I'll tell you one good thing that helps for my console gaming though is having a roommate that works at Blockbuster. He gets 10 free rentals a week and he usually gets me a couple games. Even ones before release if they happen to get them in time. Find a roommate who works at Blockbuster! :P

@RadicalToenail, I understand what you're saying, but I wasn't blaming the economy for it being the main single reason why there is piracy. All I was trying to say was that there is piracy and always has been (like you said) but the economy makes it even worse than it already was. I used to only download games until like 3 or 4 years ago until I bought a used 360. Then I didn't wanna mod it and have never done that even with my PS2 because it just felt wrong. I only downloaded for PC. But since then I started seeing myself buying more games and since a year ago that's the only thing I do. I even pre-order all the games that I'm interested in (and it's a lot) but now that I'm struggling financially (due to wanting to save up) so I buy less games but I don't download them anymore. The reason I started buying games is that I love supporting the devs because gaming has become a big part of my life and I honestly would thank piracy because of it because if it wasn't for that I wouldn't be buying so many games nowadays. Piracy has taught me a lot even though it was wrong I'm glad that I did it so now I learnt to support these devs. But that's just the way I learned and appreciate buying games now and I'm not trying to suck up to anyone it's just the way I am regardless of it being wrong or not because in the end it was right. If gaming was something that I didn't care about I'd still be downloading games.

@metalkid9 I used to steal when I was younger. Then the FBI sent me a nasty letter. I still didn't stop much until I became old enough to get a job. As someone who is attempting to be a part of the gaming industry, I'd rather give my respect towards some of my idol companies by purchasing their products, but I don't expect others to do the same

I think the problem with your post isn't that some people think stealing is wrong. It's just the way you were "blaming" the economy. I have no issue with piracy, but I think it's a little silly to blame the economy for it. Piracy has been going on practically since the internet was born, and even before that with different methods, back when the economy was stable.

Anyway, my point is that it's not the fault of the economy, it's a choice that you're not forced into making. You can be patient, save up the money and buy a game when you can, or you can pirate it. I'm not sure if what you meant was that it's because of the economy, but that's just my two cents on my understanding of your post. Let me know if I interpreted it incorrectly, because I see in your recent post that you aren't trying to justify anything, but then you don't give much explanation to your previous post. You just say that piracy is part of the world. Just...elaborate on why you made a comment on the economy.

@LeMarfanz, so I'm also guessing that you don't download music either right? Because the reality is that almost everyone who knows how to use a computer has or still does steal electronically and I'm not afraid to say that I have too. And also I"m not trying to justify anything or give excuses because it's simply something that's extremely common if you wanna deny it or not, almost everyone does it in some way or form. Good luck trying to change the world and make people admit that they don't steal because everyone does and a lot of them will deny it but I'm just the few that doesn't care what anyone thinks and I'm not afraid to admit anything because humans do make mistake whether they're conscious of it or not, everyone makes mistakes. No one is perfect. But if you are then congratz to you, my friend. Maybe some day the whole world can look up to your perfect ways. I always find it amusing when people are in denial of the reality of this world and themselves. Welcome to Earth, a place where heaven (aka perfect world) does not exist. And this is definitely not an excuse, it's just the way things are.

@LeMarfanz It is stealing. I don't buy many games anymore as I do not have the money, but I don't steal them. It's silly to justify it by saying "Well, I don't have the money, so I should be allowed to have it for free and take it."

Oddly enough I have been really enjoying playing Spec OPs Offline on the pc. Having a blast. MW2 is a household name if you have a console.. every single person I know has MW2 or loves to play it. There mostly console fanboi's that dont even know the PC exists as a viable platform. Which is fine by me.

oh my, pc piracy this, pc not supported that, modern warfail 2 didjnt sell well on pc... yawn. First off modern warfare 2 sold much more than 200,000 copies on pc, it sold 170,000 us retail in november alone. Why does it always come back to modern warfare 2 with some sales figures pulled out of thin air? Modern Warfare has become the console game to get, it sold more than all capcom games for that entire year for example. Second off, the pc is not lacking support at all, there are going to be some games not on pc. A game like this doesnt have much market on pc really, alien swarm is on steam for free... go play that and stop complaining. You dont see such hissy fits when mass effect wasnt on ps3, when final fantasy 14 wasnt on xbox 360, when stalker and the witcher were cancelled on console....

@dRuGGeRnaUt I'm not wanting to argue against your point, which I believe is quite valid, but the Steam sales number of Modern Warfare 2 were never released. So, the figure for PC sales could be much higher.

I totally understand what you're saying, but because we don't know all the facts and numbers then all we've got are assumptions.

@ dRuGGeRnaUt Reason why MW2 PC didn't sell was because it was a mediocre console port. Devs like Valve,DICE and Blizzard can make a profit seeing as they support the PC platform well and all.

athenian29 Posted Aug 17, 2010 4:32 am GMT -12 "Why is there never any PC support anymore? *grumble*" Probably because of the insane amount of piracy on the platform. PCs may be by far and large the most owned "gaming capable machine". It is also the by far the easiest to pirate software. Look at MW2 sales, 20+ million sold, roughly around 200,000 - 300,000 on pc. That's not even close. I wouldn't doubt that (most) devs and publishers will stop making PC games entirely in the next 10 years: The room for profit is not nearly as inticing to investors(remember, they need money to make games, right?)

Man, PC gamers a whiny. Well, anyway. I know people were mentioning Stars Wars Battlefront, maybe for the wrong reasons, but still. I think that would be pretty cool, if they made a multiplayer, capture the base sort of thing inside this universe. I'd be into that :)

@MXVIII - you forgot Sweden, I'm not allowed to say it's name, but a pretty big and popular bittorrent site is from there :) and yeah, it is universal, I'm from Bosnian & Herzegovina, and I can guarantee you that piracy is the way that 80% (at least) of people in south-east Europa get's games :) Italy has also big problems with piracy, just like China, Brasil, Indonesia, Philippine, India and many more less developed countries :) 40€/$ and more is just way to much for our standards to pay for a game, even less then that, if it would cost about 20€/$ then it would be affordable for us, sadly :)

athenian29 Considering that the majority of torrent sites are hosted in Russia, UK, Switzerland, Canada, etc...Id say piracy is pretty universal. Also it doesnt matter what service it uses...Even Starcraft II is pirateable.

@Moester10 The piracy levels for PC games are hardly "universal." Besides, Armageddon will be using Steamworks this time - it should be MUCH safer (though still not necessarily bulletproof) than its ill-fated predecessor (GfW LIVE was never a good idea). So why not put Battlegrounds on PC too? :?

@athenian29 The reason why there is little to no support for the PC for many games is the almost universal level of piracy and the immediate backlash for any form of DRM. While consoles have but a fraction of these issues.

This makes me think about SW Battlegrounds 1 & 2, both of which were very fun, but the most recent incarnation (LotR: Conquest) was a huge disappointment. I hope RF Battlegrounds will be as good as the SW variation if it's similar.
