THQ docks Homeworld license

Publisher confirms ownership of rights to Relic Entertainment's epic-scale intergalactic RTS; no new games announced.

Best known for its critically acclaimed Warhammer 40,000 and Company of Heroes real-time strategy games, Relic Entertainment has been making an impact on the RTS scene since its maiden effort in 2000 with Homeworld. One of the first truly 3D RTS games, Homeworld gained critical acclaim for its stunning graphics and engrossing storyline. Unfortunately, considering that both the original and its 2003 sequel--Homeworld 2--were published and owned by Sierra Entertainment, the game license seemed to be doomed to indefinite purgatory when THQ acquired Relic in 2004.

However, now that seems to not be the case. Over the weekend, a member of Relic community site Relic News unearthed a filing at the United States Patent & Trademark office that indicated the Homeworld trademark had passed from an attorney at Sierra Entertainment parent company Vivendi to one associated with THQ in July 2006. The forum post quickly led to speculation that THQ had acquired the Homeworld license and that Relic would soon get cranking on Homeworld 3.

THQ has now confirmed to GameSpot that it has indeed acquired the Homeworld license. Nevertheless, the news was tempered somewhat when the THQ rep declined to comment on whether Relic was currently at work on a new game in the franchise. Relic is currently developing in conjunction with Iron Lore Entertainment Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War: Soulstorm, the third stand-alone expansion to its far-future RTS series, for release in spring 2008.

Gods of video game industry, please hear our prayer. Make THQ spend a good LONG time making Homeworld 3 and don't take it in a 'new' direction. Oh please, oh please do not pull an EA Games and ruin a legendary franchise for years to come. Some wee gamers have yet to experience the strategic glory of Homeworld and I would hate if it went down the tubes like every other game that has changed hands.

Absolutely incredible! I've been periodically searching for news of Homeworld for years now, but somehow this one slipped by me. Homeworld 1 and 2 are the two greatest games ever to take up space on my harddrive. A third addition to the Homeworld universe would be a dream come true!

I will definitely buy Homeworld 3! I love Part 1, Part 2 was plagued with compatibility issues. Homeworld 3 would be the greatest news i heard a long time from gaming industry.

"Perfect" If THQ go through with making HW3, it will fill this void in my life. There has been a question plaguing me for many years, and while it has never truly formed coherently in my mind - something that I feel will be the first step towards me actually answering it - it essentially goes like this: What is the Eye of Aarran?

Tremedous! What brillant programs these were! An almost perfect blend of voice acting with edge of your seat action, and a real sense of accomplishment when finishing a level, not to mention the incredible graphics. I have them all, including "Cataclysm". Bring on another, please!

I first heard about this on pcgamer's podcast. I have been waiting soooo long for a new homeworld. I could not be happier that thq has picked up the title. I really hope they follow the same story formula, and i would love to see the bentusi make an appearance. Homeword was the first rts i really got into big time. Wow, they got to get the guys voice back for the narration.

YES PLEASE !!! Totally up for a NEW HOMEWORLD!....... This is a under acknowledged game thats has huge potential ! HW2 was so clean , with great use of color......... in someways i see hints of similar design principles used in the racing series Wipeout. Of this could be wishful thinking. Game play was satisfying , missions were actually interesting and the overall atmosphere was spot on !. I enjoyed the pacing , for me it was a "sit back with a contemplative drink, broken up with moments of high drama"

Best news I have read all day. I have been really happy with the DoW series and Company of Heroes and hope that Relic is onboard for HW3. THQ is really becoming an RTS power house with Relic, GPG and Ironlore. We had a LAN party around the time of the release for CoH. Relic hooked us up with some posters, mouse pads, T-Shirts and stuff and THQ followed up with 20 copies of CoH, DoW: Dark Crusade, DoW: Game of the Year edition. It really made the LAN a huge success. They really have a connection with the gamers just look at their forums and responses to the gaming community. I wish more people would buy and play their games as it really sends a message that we appreciate their products and support.

ThreeVo, you're probably a console gamer then because THQ has put out quite a few strong PC titles. Company of Heroes, my personal favorite the Warhammer 40k series, Full Spectrum Warrior (which was also on consoles), Titan Quest, Supreme Commander, STALKER.

Homeworld was awesome, first time ever I said 'wow' when starting a game. While most would avoid full 3D RTS I simply loved that feeling of hanging ther with your fleet in the void of space, with all directions to go. If they do bring Homeworld 3 I really hope they don't make the storyline a rush like in HW2. I really didnt like the fast pace of the sequel. Especially the auto jump thing once you shot the last enemy ship. Also the map interface of Cataclysm is something they should bring back. Heck, I would be allready hapy if they'd bring back HW1 and adapt it so it runs on vista :)

Homeworld was/is one the great titles released near the end of The Golden Age of Gaming, and will forever remain one of the Landmarks in Gaming History. It was a truly jaw-dropping experience (for me) when released in 2000. Can't wait for another (hopefully worthy) entry in the series!

Oh this is wonderful news! Homeworld is one of my favorite games of all time, and I've been hoping it didn't stop at Homeworld 2, hopefully with the new ownership, another Homeworld game will become a possibility in the future.

@K_M82: I guess some people would have found the whole "full 3D space" thing confusing or even daunting to include in their strategic thinking and thus completely ignored this game. However, that was not the case for me. I was actually drawn to the Homeworld series due the "full 3D space" concept since no other game has done it and it was executed so well. The fact that spaceships in this game have weaker armor on the underside of their chassis and having the ability to target specific points on enemy ships to disable them in some way really gave me the incentive to make use of 3D space as a major factor in my strategy. Great game, great concept and a great classic game. I wonder what HW3 has in store for us?

I really enjoyed HW1,2, and Cataclysm. But sadly this game never sold well. It's famous, but not that many people play it. Sadly, the stuff that makes HW great is the stuff that most gamer avoid: full 3D space strategy (I mean look at how many comment in this news page, if they announced a new CoD the number of comment would at least doubled). I have friends that love RTS but would not touch HW because it's in space and in full 3D.

I was playing HM2 just yesterday. Great game, as was the first. Personally, I found the story in 1 better than 2, so I'm wondering how far they can stretch it for the third. I'd rather see a new IP made with the same quality relic is known for. And yes, Sins is on my tracked games list.

@the_monkey_god: Tons of us have cared for Homeworld, we played and enjoyed as it was a completely different experience then any of other game at the time; the story, the fights, the characters, a lot of it hadn't been seen before. And seeing this legendary RTS return to it's original creator is exciting for those like me who know what Homeworld is all about.

Awesome News. AMAZING news. I was just thinking about what HW3 could be the other day and was wondering when - or if - Relic would have a chance to make it. I'd really like to see HW3 incorporate some sort of Meta game, much like Relic has done with Warhammer but in real time... Something like what Sins of a Solar Empire is doing, or even what Rebellion did back in the day. Incorporate some sort of real time overarching strategy with planetary systems and such, and make the tactical battles based on the traditional HW engine with persistent fleets and veterency. Do it, Relic!

One of my favorite gaming moments ever was the final fight of Homeworld where your fleet went up against the enemy mothership and its fleet while Adagio for Strings played in the background over your homeworld. A truly epic and amazing game. I'd love a worthy followup.
