Three Major February PC Games Are (Surprisingly) Not Releasing On Steam

A changing landscape for PC gaming.

Of all the major PC games coming out in February, three will not be sold on Steam. Instead, they're launching on other PC game stores.

These aren't small titles either. 4A Games' Metro Exodus, BioWare's Anthem, and Sumo Digital's Crackdown 3 all won't be available on Steam. For PC, Metro is releasing on the Epic Games Store, while Anthem is launching on EA's Origin, and Crackdown 3 is releasing on Microsoft's Windows Store. It's a trend that will continue throughout 2019. Although February's Far Cry New Dawn is releasing on Steam, another big Ubisoft game--March's The Division 2--left Valve's store and is now scheduled to launch on Epic.

Now Playing: Anthem's Future Is Up In The Air

Steam hasn't been totally left out in February. The store is still getting the aforementioned Far Cry New Dawn, as well as Jump Force, but it's clear the overall landscape of PC gaming is changing. Steam has held a fairly large monopoly on the PC gaming market for the past decade, but developers' decision to create their own stores has created unprecedented competition.

Although alternate PC game stores have existed for a while, it really wasn't until late 2018, and the announcement of the Epic Store, that Steam found itself losing high-profile launches. Epic offers developers a more lucrative split of the profits they might make off of their games--especially if the title is made with Unreal Engine. Other than Metro Exodus and The Division 2, Epic also has the exclusive rights to the PC versions of Journey, Ashen, Hades, the final two episodes of The Walking Dead: The Final Season, and several other games as well. Epic has also changed its refund policy to match Steam's.

As you might assume, Valve isn't happy to see plenty of high profile games leave its store. The company described the decision for 4A Games to take Metro Exodus off of Steam and put it onto Epic as "unfair" for Steam's customers, and one made by the game's publisher without Valve's knowledge beforehand.

Anyone who's previously pre-ordered Metro Exodus on Steam will still be able to play on the platform, but future orders must be done through Epic. That said, the PC version of Metro Exodus is only $50 USD on Epic, as opposed to the previous $60 on Steam.

Another samey corporate game for kids' with their parents' money that want to shoot each other online. Looks and feels so much like Destiny it's stupid. Same with Far Cry. Stop buying these polished turds and dig deeper, just like you have to do with music today, to find something that's actually good.

But, I understand little Jimmy wants what all the other kids are playing after school. Because they can no longer think for themselves, and are driven by marketing hype.

@dondemcforge: Why, exactly? Epic is more developer-friendly and are forcing Steam to stop acting like a monopoly. I do not understand the loyalty to Steam. In fact my GoG.com game library has grown a hundred times faster than my Steam library over the last few years, because Steam still wants to use their blasted DRM as well as not pay developers/publishers a greater share of revenue.

The biggest problem Epic has isnt matching or slightly outdoing Steam, its catching up to them and convincing people with massive Steam libraries to switch.

If they force me to buy an exclusive then I'll begrudgingly go to their store, but I'm not abandoning my library completely because Epic paid a developer for exclusivity. They can pull that shady console shit all day long. It's not going to pull people away from Steam, but it will piss them off.

Steam has a stranglehold on PC market because they've been the first and the best. Competition has been popping up, but, so far, it can't measure up to Steam. Remember Stardock's Impulse? Eventually sold to GameStop... and then completely out of business. Origin has been selling their own stuff for the past 7 or 8 years... and it still blows. GOG went from a website to a client, but it still lacks a lot of features Steam has. And, then you've got all those different website stores.

It's great that Epic is making waves. But, at this time, there's nothing there that would make me want to use them. Maybe, in a few years... Or, maybe in a few years, once Fortnite revenues start drying up and once their parent company gets tired of pumping money into them, Epic will follow Impulse's footsteps.

Absolute clickbait article, wtf is wrong with you Gamespot.

On a related note, Epic will have a day of reckoning the second Valve learns to count to 3.

@Richardthe3rd: I hope that day comes soon. Valve got so much money from the storefront and their GaaS (Dota 2, CSGO) selling skins that they basically have no reason to pump money into a new singleplayer game anymore. The most recent cashgrab called Artifact is proof that Valve only know about profits now...

@doremonhg9x: Artifact might have gained more traction if it were released closer to when Hearthstone was big.

Now that HS and online TCG are in decline Valve essentially missed the boat. I actually think Artifacts business model and gameplay is in several ways superior, fairer and less expensive than HS. But anyone who wanted into the genre is heavily invested in HS and isnt likely to switch and reinvest tons of money into a new title that way.

But Valve didnt get to the top by following trends and they wont get back to that in developer land if they dont get out in front and lead again.

Anthem was pretty obvious......its an EA game. And anything heavily invested by Microsoft is generally seen on Microsoft Store. The surprising ones are Division 2 and Metro. Luckily Division 2 is available on both Epic and Uplay, so you still get somewhat of a choice, unlike Metro.

It is concerning to think that 3rd party games may not only become PLATFORM exclusive, but also LAUNCHER exclusive on PC in the future. Definitely not knocking on healthy competition, as that is what keeps the market going and drives prices down. Competition is GOOD. But exclusivity for 3rd party games based on launchers/clients seems like a dangerous precedent. You SHOULD be able to get 3rd party digital games on PC from multiple sources, not just one. If not, it all becomes about who can afford the exclusive, not who offers the best deals and services to the consumer.

Fewer options and fewer choices are never better for the consumer.

@RELeon: And the choices that are best for the consumer are not always the best ones for the business. Nobody would buy their game on Epic's store if it was available on Steam as well. We all know that and Epic and the game's devs do so, too. The devs gotta make the choice that seems best for them, and getting to keep a bigger share of the profits must have seemed like the better choice.

It's easy to pretend like companies should only care about the consumer, but that's not how it usually works. Or is Apple nice enough to sell their products at reasonable prices? Doesn't seem that consumer friendly to me. There's always a balance between doing what brings in money and doing what the costumers want. Because those two goals usually don't align.

As long as it's not an Origin exclusive I'm good. After Origin stopped working for me, once again, last month I finally had enough and never going to bother with it again. That's a library of games I'm mildly going to miss. Regarding Steam, well they have been getting fat, lazy and complaisant, it's good that Epic game is giving them a good kick in the behind.

Well, this isn't new. New major EA releases have launched exclusively on Origin for quite some time. Also, major Microsoft games haven't been on Steam since the start of this generation. Microsoft's Forza and Gears are exclusive to the Microsoft Store -- and, for good reason, since they ran a PC / Xbox One two for one promo for some time.

@rickjamesia: Yep, it's been out for awhile. I am not sure if the PC version of Forza still supports Xbox Play Anywhere, but I know Gears of War 4 does. So essentially if you buy the PC digital copy of Gears of War 4 through the Microsoft store, you get it for your Xbox One as well -- provided you use the same account for both.

Edit: Looks like PC version of Forza Horizon 4 does support Xbox Play Anywhere.

Not sure what Steam is thinking. It's like they just don't care. With all of their money, competing should be a cakewalk. With Microsoft and EA they have no choice but other games are becoming exclusive to Epic and Steam is just sitting back and watching.

@bdrtfm: Steam is just too big. They have no reason to freak out over small stuff like this. But they might eventually if this trend keeps on going. At which point it might already be too late to keep their predominant position, but that's how the giants fall.

But of course nothing might change and so things will return back to normal eventually, without Valve having to do anything about it. Although I doubt that at this point. Steam will have to at least lower their cut of the profits as they're just blatantly ripping developers and publishers off. And now that there are alternatives more and more companies will probably decide to take those instead.

@bdrtfm: Epic is paying big money for games to be timed exclusives to their store.. Spending loads of cash for a window where the game will only be available.. Paying for games to be given away for free.. Lets wait and see where Epic games sits after hemorrhaging money for the next year or so.. Then Steam comes along and gives the Killshot by dropping their share to 20% for all games..

Why would Valve get in the market of paying for exclusives on their store.. They have something like 20 million unique daily players, a massive player base,

I'd be interested to see how many people have purchased something from the Epicgamestore,

Headline is correct but still clickbait because pc gamers know this. Ea games have been exclusive to origin since origin came out, and Same for microsoft published games. The one exception is killer instinct because they were hoping to boost the population base with steam users and that failed miserably.

@neurogia: lol do you know what a monopoly is.. a monopoly would be if no other stores existed because Steam took them out.. if anything Steam has been anti monopoly.. Notice how all these stores exist.. Greenmangaming, Gamersgate, humble bundle, Indie gala, Fanatical, Uplay, Origin, MS gamestore, Groupees, Dailyindiegame Notice how steam takes zero cut from steam key sales..

If they are a monopoly they are surely doing a piss poor job of controlling their monopoly.. They aren't a monopoly by any stretch of the imagination..

@neurogia: I generally would agree with this... except... the major competition is now Epic Store, scion of one of the more vile publishers out there. Epic Games is one of the major companies who pushed for online codes on console games in the late 00s and early 2010s. They have been anti-consumer for quite awhile.

Second, the precedent of locking down exclusive third-party games is rather alarming on the PC. This isn't giving us more options. It's actually creating a false proprietary platform within an open PC gaming platform, which fundamentally kills competition and the PC free market. Right now the Deus Ex series can be purchased through 5 different PC gaming portals, including GOG, Steam, and Origins. Now imagine if Epic Store decides to make a historically portal agnostic third-party series like this an exclusive. This isn't good for the PC community. This kind of business maneuver should be frowned upon.

@neurogia: And that's why every PC game should be on all store fronts with no exception. It's not Valve that needs it, but Origin, Microsoft, Uplay, and Epic games as well. If all games were on all store fronts, we'd have true competition and reduce the risk of PC gaming becoming the dumpster fire that console gaming has become with exclusives and paid online.
