TikTok Ban Bill Signed Into Law By Biden, Forcing Possible Sale Of The Company

TikTok is not going anywhere, its CEO says.

Major changes could be in the cards for TikTok. President Biden on Wednesday signed into law a $95 billion plan that delivers aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, and also mandates that TikTok owner ByteDance must sell the hugely popular app or else it will be banned in the US.

ByteDance is now on the clock and has nine months to divest from its US subsidiary (with a further three-month extension if a deal is in the works but not yet completed). As such, any potential ban wouldn't happen soon, and that's to say nothing of any legal battles that could extend the timeline or lead to any other changes.

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew said in a video posted on TikTok (via THR), "Rest assured, we aren't going anywhere." Chew aded, "Make no mistake, this is a ban, a ban on TikTok and a ban on you and your voice. Politicians may say otherwise. But don't get confused."

"TikTok gives everyday Americans a powerful way to be seen and heard," Chew added.

According to ByteDance, TikTok has more than 170 million users in America. Today's news means nothing for the TikTok app you might already have installed on your phone. It will continue to work normally and any potential ban or change to the app presumably would not go into effect anytime soon.

This is all happening because US lawmakers--Republican and Democrat alike--along with other experts and officials, have said TikTok poses a potential security threat. TikTok has maintained for years that the app is not secretly a mechanism of the Chinese government and that it does not share data about US users and would not if asked to do so, according to the AP.

In 2020, Microsoft said it wanted to buy TikTok but later moved away from those plans. More recently, it was reported that former Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick was putting together a team to explore buying TikTok.

Sucks for the Americans that like it and make money from it. Won't affect me though. Not that I use it much, but nice to have the option. Girlfriend loves it.

I'd celebrate, but I know the brain rot will just move to another platform.

I don't use TikTok or any other social media. But my only wish has always been for parents to properly educate the dangers of social media and raise a generation of kids without them. I actually think that a ban of social media platforms on US govt. employees' devices makes more sense than a general ban. But oh well. I know India banned it too but they did it out of spite because of their border issues with China and anti-China sentiment is pretty strong in India. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/tiktok-may-be-banned-in-the-us-heres-what-happened-when-india-did-it/ar-AA1nzkcT

No, they want you confused. It's not a ban on anything other than Tiktok being trash. It's a ban for ONE platform. If it was an attack on the "voice" of the people. It would be aimed at all social platforms. Gamespot included. But it's not. He's just trying to cause a uproar about infringing on freespeech and it's usually a tactic used to keep the sludge going. They just want to keep getting all the people in USA who can't be asked to read the terms that all their personal info is sold to china.

Banned in other countries for the same reason, and our politicians are actually agreeing which is rare .. sounds like something we should ban.

I couldn't care less if TikTok comes or goes, if it goes something will fill the void and I say that as someone who has had the app since it was just people dancing or lip-syncing in cosplay. It's just an app, and it's a far cry from what it was that led to its popularity. However, what I do not like is the broader implications here. It's one thing for the FTC to step in and say a company can't do business here, it's quite another for Congress to write a law forcing a company to sell to an American company (and let's face it, of the handful that can afford it, no one will be happy to have them in charge). Who is to say they won't do the same to other companies? And who believes decisions will actually be above board and decided solely on national security implications? It's a slippery slope that won't stop with TikTok.

I hope they don't sell it, and the world's most popular app that has more engagement than any other, is available to everyone except Americans. Haha, nice job.
