Tiny Tina's Wonderlands Has Gone Gold

Roll for an unstoppable March 25 release date.

Gearbox Software has completed work on Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, its upcoming Borderlands spin-off that stars the fan-favorite explosives expert voiced by Ashly Burch. While the game is complete, there'll still be some fine-tuning to do ahead of its March 25 release, which will likely include the usual updates and optimizations.

In a separate tweet, Wonderlands creative director Matt Cox commented on the challenge of developing the game in the current pandemic era of the world.

"Shipping games is hard, and significantly harder during a pandemic. I am overwhelmingly proud of every part of our Tiny Tina's Wonderlands teams," Cox said. "We dug deep and poured our hearts into something special. I love our team, and love our fans. March 25th is so close!"

Similar to the Borderlands series, Wonderlands will cast you as one of several classes---Brr-Zerker, Clawbringer, Graveborn, Spellshot, Spore Warden, or Stabbomancer--who all wield unique abilities.

Wonderlands also features a multi-class system that allows for any of those two roles to be combined, which should make for some interesting character builds. Guns are of course an option for dealing with all manner of assorted fantasy enemies when action skills and various other passive abilities aren't enough.

For an idea of just how Gearbox handles the fantasy genre, you can check out Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragonkeep for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. The Borderlands 2 DLC is now a standalone adventure, and if your PS Plus subscription is up to date, you can add it to your PlayStation library as part of February's offerings through the online service.

Something about the Borderlands series itself has always roped me in only to have me quitting after beating the campaign and not really pursuing the whole "end game" thing. This though...I'm genuinely excited for some tongue-in-cheek parody of my beloved table-top d20 gaming and CRPG addiction.

I can't see this being a big seller. For one thing it has too much competition this month alone with Elden Ring and Horizon: Forbidden West never mind in March when it will have to contend with the likes of Gran Turismo 7, Stranger of Paradise, Forspoken and, dare I say it, Grand Theft Auto V for PS5/Xbox Series.

Couple that with the poor performance of BL3 when it launched and it adds up to discount or, worse still, potential bargain bin entertainment.

@gotrekfabian: Poor performance of BL3? It was record-setting in the series... Lemme guess, you just read the Epic exclusive hate and assumed something.

@saint311: I'm talking about the issues with programming; bugs and crashes etc.

Besides this, sales are generally affected in the following game when a game has issues, not the one which has the problems. Take Cyberpunk and AC Unity, they sold like hot cakes but the following games from the developer have/will sell poorly.

Now please, stop with the self righteous indignation and think before you post.

@gotrekfabian: I disagree that this will be a flop, but rather than debate the details, I will say this: you just described the very happy dilemma the gaming community seems to be facing in 2022.

There's no way I'm completing my list of 2022 games I want to play before 2023 arrives...and that's effing fantastic.

@esqueejy: Other than yourself, I just don't know anyone who's interested in playing the game and certainly not day one.

To each their own and I don't wish the game any ill will but I simply foresee this as a game that will get washed away by other games which release at a similar time.

PS You're right about the barrage of games we're likely to see in 2022, we should be in for a potentially gleeful year of gaming. Let's just hope that the games hold up to their potential.

@ender707: I'm one of those and I enjoy games like tabletop D&D too but this just isn't doing it for me for some reason.

I hope you enjoy the game though.

@Ultima_Dragoon: Yep; took about 3mo of patches to get BL3 where it needed to be.

The good news is that this reuses a large part of that engine... which is probably also bad news, given bugs that will hard-reboot an X1X joining a game in progress on an XSX, and other silly netcode-MMing issues like that.

...and if you've a cheevo-collector, forget this game until Summer. GBX has never had a working 100% cheevo at launch for Co-Op. Never stopped me from enjoying, but it's still mildly annoying to have a stack of 99%s.
