Titanfall 2 Doesn't Have a Season Pass, as Dev Jabs at the Practice

"No hidden costs."

90 Comments

Unlike many other triple-A games, Respawn's Titanfall 2 will not offer a season pass. The studio jabbed at the idea of a season pass today in a tweet.

The developer wrote, "Remember when buying a game got you everything?"

As announced previously, all Titanfall 2 post-launch maps and modes will be free. Respawn is doing this so as not to split up the audience, the developer wrote in a blog post. Titanfall 2's first free DLC map is a remastered version of the Angel City map from the first Titanfall. People who preorder Titanfall 2 get the map three days early when it launches sometime in December.

"Once you've purchased Titanfall 2, your investment includes a full single-player campaign, the full multiplayer maps and modes, and long-term support with no hidden costs," Respawn said.

Titanfall 2 is not the first big-name game to offer maps and modes for free. Microsoft's Halo 5: Guardians does the same, with developer 343 stating that that it didn't want to split up the player base. More than a year after release, Halo 5 is still getting more free DLC.

Halo 5 brings in revenue beyond the initial game sale through its various microtransactions. Whether or not Titanfall 2 will offer microtransactions remains to be seen. In September, art director Joel Emslie told PlayStation Lifestyle, "It's not decided on yet."

Titanfall 2 comes out tomorrow, October 28, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. GameSpot's review scored it a 9/10. For more on the game's critical reception, read this roundup of review scores.

You can watch GameSpot editors Mike Mahardy and Rob Handlery play Titanfall 2's multiplayer live right now.

@chiefwiggum16:
all DLC was free after it's 1 year anniversary. The season pass wasn't even expensive, I remember only paying 12 bucks for the DLC.

@chiefwiggum16: They were in bed with Microsoft at that time. Pretty sure that was the reason why. So please move on, that was then, now it doesn't have one which is what matters most. Gamers sure love to live in the past. Jeeeeez.

@ZeEzO: How do you know? They could as easily said "ok we are doing season passes for this game too." Your assumption of what way the past affected the future is completely flawed. But think what you want. You do know how to read minds and worked at Respawn right ASSHOLIO!

@fig56: well of course it did. the game tanked like no other. the game couldnt make it a year without all the season pass content being free. if it were successful they wouldnt think twice about doing it again.

@fig56: I really doubt Microsoft had that much control. Microsoft provided funds in exchange for exclusivity. EA published it, so ultimately EA made those kinds of decisions.

They can't risk turning people off of their game with dlc when they have COD:IW and BF1 to compete with.

Let's not forget 343i released halo 5 with a fraction of the content of previous titles then released features that should have been in since the beginning slowly as dlc. On top of no real dlc maps besides like 2 built from the ground up maps. Respawn definitely gets praise here. 343i does not.

@WhoIsTheDrizzle:

Should? Who are you to say should? They provided a single player campaign and the best multiplayer shooter. Then they added forge and horde modes which they should not need to add. The only thing I could agree is on big team battles but it did not take long to be added. Halo does so much more that any other console shooter at no extra cost that your comment really surprises me.

Remember when you didn't have to preorder to get everything.

They had no problem selling a season pass last time. The only reason they're not doing it this time is cause it crippled their last game and they're afraid it might happen again. They're not video games saints over here doing it out of the kindness of their hearts.

Don't be surprised when Titanfall 3 has preorder bonuses and DLC.

Totally agree. I hope the free dlc become a trend beyond Halo, Gears, and Titanfall.

@chiefwiggum16: ...and this one doesn't.

Also, if I recall, Respawn pushed for the content in the first to eventually be made free.

@ZeEzO: There is only one reason why developpers are still pushing out paid DLC : gamers buy them. If not, they wouldn't even care releasing 4 maps for 15$, they just wouldn't release anything.

@Duttyhandz: i think they would release it even if 2-5% bought it. i think that it is all ready in their main budget, and that it is cut from the main game (allot of the time). so the cost of releasing it is prob just pure profit. of some map packs are made after, but releasing some maps and some models for guns is not such a high cost for them anyway

The worst kind of DLC is map packs because it splits the player base, but generally pissed of seeing Ultra editions-super dellux editions-superdupermaddafacka editions on games.

@sellingthings: Yeah, but expansion packs were usually released more than a year after, and were a lot more substantial than a mere 15$ map pack as they were usually retailing at full game price (Starcraft Brood War, Warcraft II : Dark Portal, Diablo 2: Lords of Destruction, etc)

@ZeEzO: Citing "their last game had paid DLC" as the sole purpose for not buying a sequel where the developer has officially committed to NOT charge for DLC is exactly how you ensure that games continue to be released with paid DLC.

And many Anus' are thankful for the break.

Seems Rise of Tomb Raider was only recent game to actually provide substance in their Season Pass. Meaning, content you can play instead of skins and online multiplayer maps.
