Titanfall 2 Doesn't Have a Season Pass, as Dev Jabs at the Practice

"No hidden costs."

Unlike many other triple-A games, Respawn's Titanfall 2 will not offer a season pass. The studio jabbed at the idea of a season pass today in a tweet.

The developer wrote, "Remember when buying a game got you everything?"

No Caption Provided

As announced previously, all Titanfall 2 post-launch maps and modes will be free. Respawn is doing this so as not to split up the audience, the developer wrote in a blog post. Titanfall 2's first free DLC map is a remastered version of the Angel City map from the first Titanfall. People who preorder Titanfall 2 get the map three days early when it launches sometime in December.

"Once you've purchased Titanfall 2, your investment includes a full single-player campaign, the full multiplayer maps and modes, and long-term support with no hidden costs," Respawn said.

Titanfall 2 is not the first big-name game to offer maps and modes for free. Microsoft's Halo 5: Guardians does the same, with developer 343 stating that that it didn't want to split up the player base. More than a year after release, Halo 5 is still getting more free DLC.

Halo 5 brings in revenue beyond the initial game sale through its various microtransactions. Whether or not Titanfall 2 will offer microtransactions remains to be seen. In September, art director Joel Emslie told PlayStation Lifestyle, "It's not decided on yet."

Titanfall 2 comes out tomorrow, October 28, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. GameSpot's review scored it a 9/10. For more on the game's critical reception, read this roundup of review scores.

You can watch GameSpot editors Mike Mahardy and Rob Handlery play Titanfall 2's multiplayer live right now.

It's cool that Respawn isn't doing the season pass for Titanfall 2 this time. That's an awesome gaming news right there, man. Gamers are sick of season pass & other things that divide the gaming community. I doubt that others will follow Respawn's footsteps. But, it's an step in the right direction.

I might have to buy it just to support them. This is almost proof that companies do hold back content for DLC. Hence the "complete game" comment. They know it, we know it. People just didn't want to believe it. That's how DLC was handled originally anyway. It was free as a "thank you" for buying and supporting their game. It was to extend the life of the game as well, while they work on the next one. Then somewhere down the line, it got way out of control because they realized that people won't think twice about buying DLC. Either way, I can go on and on about this topic but kudos to Respawn. Like others have said though, it's EA... so certainly expect a crap ton of micro transactions. Hopefully it's just for nothing but useless cosmetics.

Still, this is the only EA game out of ea access program. I don't know how they were allowed when bigger games like FIFA, Madden and Battlefield are in the program. This is why I'm not buying it until it is very cheap. They are no saints, and everything is about money remember. I still applaud the trend Microsoft shooters started on this generation of consoles.

Kudos to Respawn, if only more companies felt this way.

"The campaign should be longer"

Says idiots who spend 50 hours in the MP and still complain about the price tag.

Went ahead and ordered the game yesterday due to this, the good reviews and just the fact that these guys re-invigorated the fps genre with CoD4 and deserve the support.

This is good to see, but it's a shame the SP campaign is not longer. I don't mind playing for season passes, as I always wait and buy them when they are cheaper ( fallout 4 is half price at moment on PS network), 40 quid for a season pass is greedy. Battlefield 3 brought out a 40 quid add on ( much the same as a season pass) , I brought that but I found a lot of the content I wasn't bothered about in the end, so I wait if I really want one. Shame dev can't follow Witchers 3 dev lead......

Back in the day (mid 90s) a DLC was known as Expansion Pack. Command and Conquer for instance, did this and it was great but there is a reason why it was great, namely: Already huge and amazing single player campaign with great acting, voice acting, animations etc for that time! Already innovative Multiplayer capabilities. Game was at the start already huge and promised at least 15-20 hours of campaign gameplay. Already many units, etc in the game to command. So, then the expansion packs came. Sure, videos and voice acting was replaced with text, but new units and tactics were introduced, thus, an expansion pack cost roughly 20 bucks or so. So back then, it was safe to say, a game came before expansion packs already pretty damn complete.

Nowadays however it is different! Games mostly have crap and too short SP campaign, because game studios rather make money with less effort, which is where repetitive MP maps come into play, thus, they want to sell the game at full price (more expensive than in the 90s). So they on purpose launch an incomplete game, to then force people to continue spend 2-3x a year money with DLCs. To make things worse, they do this for MP related purposes, the cheapest, fastest and easiest thing to do in a game (= multiplayer maps). I would not care at all, if they would charge such games accordingly, which would have to be half the price. I somewhat welcome this move by Respawn, however, in Titanfall 1 they charged for DLCs and there was no SP campaign and now in Titanfall 2, the single player campaign is apparently a 4 hour joke, so I will go ahead and wait until the price drops to 30 bucks, what in my opinion it is approximately worth due to its current content.

I hate fps and gets motion sickness when playing one but will support the dev by buying one as a birthday gift. Really good practice from them.

TF 2 really wants to rebuild its brand. The gameplay looks solid to me, and now they are making such moves, hope it can succeed.

Ongoing free support encourages ongoing game sales. If a game has a season pass, then there is less incentive to buy it, due to split community, less base content.

@MrFreehuggs: no i expect the price to drop dumbass. the problem here is the season pass was to give the game longevity for extra cash. the game couldnt even go 1 year until it was FREE!

@CagedOkami: The season pass for Titanfall was $25. Maybe if you can't live with people saving $25 more than you, you shouldn't be an early adopter. And DLC/season passes go on sale all of the time. I bought the Titanfall season pass for $9 just a couple of months before they made it free (which was exactly a year after the game launched).

The longevity for Titanfall was extended because they made the season pass for free. When I bought the season pass, finding matches with DLC took a lot of time. As soon as the SP went free, matchmaking times plummeted because the player base was no longer segregated.

@MrFreehuggs: your confusing longevity with a crippling userbase. the season pass gave the game longevity for extra cash(again), this is fine if you wanna shell out the extra dough. the userbase was so low they had to give it away, thats not cool for the paying guys, they should have gotten something in return. yea im still on board with the whole season pass people getting burned here.

@sellingthings: The season pass was $50. So people were more pissed about someone getting the DLC for $50 cheaper, opposed to the getting the game for $55 less?

Hmm maybe I should have bought this instead of BF1. Not saying that BF1 is terrible, but it is not anything special and I feel I bought half the game....

Solid. Good on them for this. It was a great thing for Halo 5, which I'm still enjoying immensely. Looks like I most likely will pick this up instead of BF1 when I get around to buying a new game.

I take breaks from shooters every once in awhile to catch up on some more time-consuming games. Its nice to know that when I go back, I won't be required to pay more just to continue playing with everyone.

glad to see more big developers going this route (RS Siege being another example). Charging for maps and modes is a good way to hurt the longevity of your games more than anything else.

Funny them taking a jab at a practice they already partook in previously but regardless..

This is ultimately why I grabbed Titanfall 2 over BF1. Like Battlefield 1 looks amazing, really, but I know I'm gonna have to drop over a hundred dollars into that game to essentially not fall behind once the DLC hits and, well, that's really a lot of money I don't want to spend on a multiplayer game. So rather grabbing this for now (got it for $49 which I'm happy about) and will grab BF on a special or so down the line.

Its nice for once being able to buy the standard edition of a game and knowing I'll be getting most of the content without any extra cost, Jesus why did this become such a rarity?

But seriously, don't mock this when every other game you've published has a season pass or microtransactions.
