Titanfall 2 Review Roundup

Titanfall 2 still plays smoothly, but are its campaign and new multiplayer additions worthwhile?

Just days after the release of Battlefield 1, another big first-person shooter from EA, Titanfall 2, makes its debut later this week. The first reviews hit the web today, and we've rounded them up for you below.

Titanfall 2 marks a departure from the first game in that it's available on PS4 in addition to Xbox One and PC, and it features a proper single-player campaign. Notably, despite being an EA game, it's not a part of EA or Origin Access, meaning there's no way to get your hands on it early.

Now Playing: Titanfall 2 Video Review

The game does feature PS4 Pro support right on the disc, though you won't be playing that version at native 4K. For that, you'll need to be playing the PC version, the system requirements for which you can see here.

Read on for a look at the reviews.

  • Game: Titanfall 2
  • Developer: Respawn Entertainment
  • Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC
  • Release Date: October 29
  • Price: $60

GameSpot -- 9/10

"Titanfall 2 demonstrates a vitality that its predecessor couldn't. Whereas the first Titanfall kept up its breakneck pace throughout the entirety of every match, Titanfall 2 understands that sometimes, dialing things back for a few moments can make the long run much more enjoyable. In many ways, Titanfall 2 feels like the game Respawn should have made in 2013. It's a fantastic sequel. It's a fluid shooter. It's a spectacular game." -- Mike Mahardy [Full review]

Polygon -- 7/10

"Consistency is a problem for Titanfall 2 in general, and it's a game that seems to struggle with a confident direction for its changes. The end result is a collection of fantastic mechanics across its campaign and its multiplayer that often feel hamstrung by difficult to understand design choices. There's clearly more here than before, and the package is offering something more 'complete' by today's standards. But Titanfall 2 throws the series' dynamics off enough to make for something that just doesn't quite click together as well as it did before." -- Arthur Gies [Full review]

GamesRadar -- 4.5/5

"Titanfall 2 might well be this year's best surprise. The original game's gorgeously tactile, flowing traversal systems always had great potential as the fuel of a single-player campaign, but the care and craft that Respawn has instilled into creating that adventure will blindside you. It's immediately gratifying on a moment-to-moment basis, but as a complete work and experience, it's one of the most creative and rewarding FPS in recent memory." -- David Houghton [Full review]

USGamer -- 4/5

"Although it's a little on the short side, and its production values are a bit old-school, Titanfall 2's single-player campaign is a really enjoyable experience while it lasts. It's very inventive and fun, and a great warm-up for the game's excellent multiplayer component, whose gunplay and controls are absolutely outstanding. All it needs is a few more maps and modes." -- Jaz Rignall [Full review]

NZGamer -- 8.2/10

"Titanfall 2 is the game the original Titanfall was trying to be. A compromise on some multiplayer content has made a better envisioned game with a story that's resonant in the smaller moments but extraneous in the larger ones. It's very much a direct translation from Titanfall's multiplayer. Being uniquely eclectic, Titanfall 2 is designed just well enough, and with enough layers so to not be entirely derivative. Hero simulations are so vastly abundant in this industry--so if you're going to play one, you might as well choose from those who do it the best." -- Ben Wilson [Full review]

It's funny seeing the the whiners go on about the short SP but then go out and buy a $60 SP only FPS for its "meh" 12-15 hour campaign.

@7tizz: Hell, EA killed Pandemic,Westwood and maxis.just look what happened to their franchises:

Mercenaries ,C&C,Sim City, dungeon Keeper and many other great franchises are dead thanks to EA.

and last but not least EA ruined Star Wars Battlefront .

Battlefront has been a disappointing game for the original Battlefront fans and it will be.

LOL Polygon. The reviewer is the exact same guy who played Doom awfully on that YouTube video (Arthur Gies). There's no way I trust that guy with reviews on shooters.

@game_cross: Pfft, Geis. I stopped listening to Rebel FM because of his pretentiousness. Never really pegged him as an FPS guy from all gaming discussions I have listened to in their podcast.

@game_cross: I was just going to say only the guy who's terrible at shooters doesn't like it, so goods signs.

And Polygon gives everything 7 out of 10 so...

@7tizz: So a 9/10 is bad huh? And how is it worse than the first one lol, everything I have read and seen says otherwise. Maybe I'm reading different reviews or something...

@7tizz: Yah I hear you on that lol. I always prefer to play it, listen to it, watch it myself before making a final decision. But, if something is getting total garbage reviews, I'll be a lot more careful with my money.

@nickpeck36: If it was an xbox/MS exclusive like the first one he'd be praising the hell outta it. Because it's also on ps4 now, he has to hate.

@joshrmeyer: If that's the case... meh. I hate people like that lol. I'm more of an Xbox/MS guy, but I love my PS4 as well and have actually been playing on the PS4 more (mostly because all my friends play MP games on the PS systems). Just got BF1 on the PS4 but I haven't played it yet, hope to jump on tonight.

5 reviews. Not exactly a robust round up. Your herd requires more critters.

Only shooter worth getting this year is bf1. Modern warfare remastered would be right alongside bf1 for me but theres no way im paying for iw, even if the bundle was 60 dollars with mwr.

That's a relief. I wasn't expecting it to fail but it doesn't hurt to know it succeeded. Friday can't come soon enough, have to bust ass and finish Battlefield 1 this week!

Looks like it's getting pretty good reviews across the board. I'll consider getting it if I can convince my friends to pick it up

I still don't see this as anything beyond a rental. I'll split my time between COD4 Remastered and BF1, and if a chance to rent this comes up, i'll rush through the campaign and return it.

@suicidesn0wman: You do know this game is an online MP shooter right? Just like BF1, so going by the tacked on SP is not the way to go (again, just like the BF games).

@nickpeck36: Yet unlike BF1, Titanfalls MP mode was garbage. Don't need to buy the game if I have no plans of playing it online.

@suicidesn0wman: Says you. Titanfall's MP was a total blast, but obviously it wasn't for you. If you didn't like it then don't even bother with the series imo.

@nickpeck36: I liked TF1, but the MP from the beta for TF2 was terrible. They changed too much, alienated the core in favor of the casual. I only want to try out the campaign because I always enjoyed the campaign IW made for their CoD games and MOH: AA.

@suicidesn0wman: Well say that in the first place!! Now I see what you were getting at lol. Yah, I'd just do a rent for the SP since it's not all that long. I didn't play the beta but from everything I have watched it looks like the MP is played the same as the first, but obviously those that played the beta would know the "feel better.

I hope they didn't screw it up as there wasn't anything wrong with how it played in the first game imo (controls / speed wise). I did read that some people said it's much better than the beta though so hopefully they fixed whatever they messed up (at least to some degree).

For once I agree with Polygon on this one. Didn't play the game yet but the Beta left me unimpressed. The maps and wall running didn't seem thought out well enough this time around. Don't like the changes with the Titans either(except for the new titan classes).
