Titanfall 2 Should Have Sold Better, Dev Says

"Maybe because it was super-crowded, the pricing was aggressive--it was a rough window to launch our game."

Much has already been said about Titanfall 2's lower-than-expected sales, and now Respawn boss Vince Zampella has spoken more about the topic. In an interview with GameSpot, Zampella said Titanfall 2 was "successful" and that it "sold well." However, Zampella also acknowledged that sales should have been stronger.

"The game was successful, it sold well, but it didn't quite sell as well as it should have," Zampella admitted. "Maybe because it was super-crowded, the pricing was aggressive--it was a rough window to launch our game."

No Caption Provided

Titanfall 2 was released on October 28, sandwiched between Battlefield 1 (October 21) and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (November 4). Andrew Wilson, the CEO of Titanfall publisher Electronic Arts, said before the game's release last year that Titanfall 2 and Battlefield 1 catered to different types of gamers.

Also in our interview, Zampella talked about how Titanfall 2's fanbase is a generally positive group, which can't always be said for other fanbases. "There's not really much negativity or acidity compared to other communities, so I'm very thankful for that," he said.

Zampella said he hopes the Titanfall franchise continues, and it will with the mobile RTS Titanfall: Assault, which is due out on August 10. Neither Respawn nor EA has announced plans for the franchise beyond that, but Zampella teased that there are other projects in the works that he can't talk about just yet.

"It's important for us to keep the franchise going. "We're doing more Titanfall," which is the quote I'm supposed to say. We have our franchise creative director, who's in charge of safeguarding the franchise in multiple formats and making sure it continues to grow. There's some other things we're doing that haven't been announced just yet, but we're heavily invested in the Titanfall universe."

"We're working on more Titanfall--we're not announcing what that is yet, but there's a few other things in the works--the mobile game, which turned out fantastic and is super fun, the fans love it and allowed us to expand on what we did in the last games. So I'm pretty happy with what the franchise has become."

We also learn in the interview that Respawn does not plan to release more Titanfall 2 content now that the Ultimate Edition is out. "Probably not. We want to work on new stuff," Zampella said.

In addition to more Titanfall projects, Respawn is working on a third-person Star Wars action game that's being directed by God of War veteran Stig Asmussen. In March this year, Respawn said this project is "still wrapped in secrecy" and won't be discussed for "a while."

You can read our full interview with Zampella right here.

Your writing is trash Makuch, absolute trash. I feel ashamed for you even.

For those who jumped straight to the comments and skipped this clickbait tripe that highlights the negative over the actual good, here's the important parts to take away from what Respawn said;

Yes, the game didn't sell as much as they hoped for BUT Zampella brought up a few important points, namely:

-It still sold incredibly well all things considered. It was not a failure.

-It's got an active fanbase that's very positive and happy with the game.

-There WILL be more Titanfall.

Sod off with this "oh it should have sold better" and "lower than expected sales" crap, it's giving the impression that Titanfall is doomed as one can see is being reflected in the comments, which is the furthest from the truth.

Too much competition these days, we have many games coming out and still the dominance of multiplayer titles in which people tend to stick around instead of just getting done and moving on.

It's probably not the game's fault it's but just that maybe there was not too much of a demand for yet another multiplayer when it got released.

Titanfall 2 was actually pretty awesome. But multiplayer was practically dead in my country and practically dead in Australia , accept at certain specific times and the single player wasn't as good as something like Half Life or Call Of Duty for me to play through it multiple times, if the multiplayer was dead. New franchise Games like Titanfall , might do themselves a service by getting very competitive with prices, to up the playerbases. Then once there's a giant player base, then increase the price on further new installments down the road. They are competing with very high priced games or highly populated established games. Battlefield. Battlefront. Counter Strike (only a $15 game, has more players than the new Battlefields and Cods across all platforms put together daily) call of duty. With these established games with such high player rates. Im surprised theres any fps gamers left to even play Titanfall. Now Overwatch and Destiny in the picture. They are competing with a lot. I seriously think games like Titanfall, should decrease their price points to gain a massive established following. Then up the prices on future installments. Just to get a player base.

TF2 deserved to fail. Those idiots aligned with EA who put their game release between CoD and Battlefield, EA already has enough competition from CoD so they purposely set TF2 up to fail with a fall release.

Can you explain why EA, or any publisher, would purposefully let their own game fail?

TF2 should have been a Spring 2017 release date, or just after E3.

Also TF2 needed a epic campaign mode with boat loads of lore creating a reason to feel invested into the game.

The multiplayer is fun buuuuuuuuut it just does not have that lasting appeal. I just can't sit down for an evening session of TF2. Maybe it is just the gun play. Every thing just feels to light. Titans are fun, but unless you are really good they are paper robots lol. I really want to love this game but it is just a little off.

I'd blame it more on the reception to the first game. That DOES make a difference, folks. It sold decently, sure, but that was mainly because it was a launch game. So many people I know were like "meh" and never thought of the series again. Releasing alongside a super popular game isn't that big a deal if the game is amazing. Borderlands released right alongside Modern Warfare 2 and sold like 5 mil, and I don't remember it having much marketing.

It's a fantastic game. Everybody except EA knows that they killed it by releasing it when they did. Sad to see Zampella get burned like this. You can tell he's jaded just by the quotes in this article alone.

If the MP whould have played half as good as the first I whould have prefered it...but it played like a different Team made it without knowing what the first made great together with some awful Ideas and much worse Map-design overall.

A well made SP doesn´t excuse that.

I agree actually, selling it at that time was a terrible move. I'm not sure if EA or Respawn is to blame for that, but it should have been delayed until the next year, perhaps March time when the CoD/BF1 hype had worn off.

I think it's a great game, and they've shown a lot of support (with free updates) to it.

I don't get why they can't just admit they didn't take player feedback into consideration and that's why sales fell short. It was a bland game...the changes they showed off in the beta weren't well received. And when they ignored all that, and still released a 7/10 game, and got 7/10 sales, they're surprised.

Dunno, the industry is getting ugly these days. The mictro-transaction slogs, releasing unfinished games to be shored up by extra DLC, and wonton disregard of the audience.

Sales were exactly what the should of been...it was an Ok game, and it got Ok sales.

The funniest part was EA saying the games are tailored towards different types of gamer's, and then proceeding to include the two games bundled together in a Christmas deal.

Maybe it was because in Titanfall 1, you change the Generation level 8 requirement from 50 to 5 ejection pilot kills to rank. This changed rubbed me the wrong way. To be honest the first game was great, lacked depth but that change just annoyed me.

This story deserves the biggest Duh of the year. Also MS should take note, releasing all your games in the 4th quarter is a bad strategy if your trying to make them stand out.

Loved the game (not quite as good as 1 though), but every single person besides apparently EA saw this coming from a mile away, should have been delayed a few months. I don't think January or February really had anything in the way of shooters and most people are over or coming down off the hype phase of the holiday games by that point.

The truth is that not many people care about mechs, and the people who DO care about mechs, tend to not care much for on-foot combat.

So you ended up with a game that appeals to few people, and you chose to release it right between a new CoD and Battlefield game, in a year where we already had DOOM and Overwatch.

You basically pulled a Battleborn. If anything, you should be happy it sold at all.

Prices are so high these days, for games plus DLC etc. I'm surprised any games are selling over a few million copies. Forza Horizen 3 with expansions, dlc etc..Literally costs over $200. That's almost half an entire console price. Just for a full game. Same with COD. Battlefield. Some Ultimate editions of games, dont even include everything and all dlc content.

EA was stupid enough to launch the game right next to Battlefield 1 and I was actually hype for BF1 then I was for Titanfall 2 despite I really had fun playing the first game.

But now that Titanfall 2 is on EA Origin, I'm really loving the game, the campaign is what really sold me and glad I waited until it hit the vault.

@7tizz: Not everyone ignores that, I see people saying it from time to time. I disagree though, I like the TF|2 multiplayer experience more than TF|1, which is probably why I currently have over 100 more hours played in TF|2 than TF|1, and the gap is widening.

@7tizz: I agree, it seems like Respawn went out of their way to try and appease those who didn't like the first game at the expense of those who did, the end result being nobody really cared for it except the reviewers.

@Zero_Maniac: Yeah, but MS REALLY banked on it. It was the tent pole of the X1's launch and didn't come close to meeting expectations. Bad enough that MS didn't care enough to renew the exclusivity agreement. It also likely lost money so, yeah, it's in failure territory.

Like most, I went for BF1 instead of TF2, and yet, singleplayer wise TF2 rolls over BF1 and if it wasnt because of the smaller playerbase in my region and therefore increased skill gap, I found multiplayer to be enjoyable on both. Really wish Titanfall 2 would succeed or at least progressively get better like R6.

Titanfall was a good game, but flawed because of a lack of a single player campaign so you didn't get into the lore or the story so it didn't have any lasting appeal. But the multiplayer was solid and first class. Titanfall 2 included a single player campaign that was akin to a platform game to my mind, and pretty dire to be honest. Yeah we can wall-run, doesn't mean we want to do that for the entire campaign with floaty platforms and stuff. They messed with the multiplayer aspect which wasn't broken and ended up screwing the entire game.

Overall multiplayer games where you don't feel like you can make a general difference to the result by how you play are screwed. BF suffers the same problem. And even though people don't like COD etc, a couple of good players can make a huge difference to the game even if the rest of the team suck. Titanfall/BF if you get the message you are behind ... might as well call it a day. Hardly any close calls or close games.

@donjuancorleone: The one mission were you switch between past and present was an idea ripped from a whole game called 'Singularity'. A game that was totally underrated in my opinion and did that idea a whole lot better.

My problem with the single player campaign was the jumping around. For a shooter I felt like I was in a platformer, and to have the ghost runner to show you the way. To me just showed how bad the design was overall. If you need to hold my hand to tell me where to go at this stage of the game, then as a game you are failing. Not enough shooting, too much pointless time away from your Titan. With nothing more to the narrative than they are out to get you. Go find x or y.
