Titanfall 2's Twitter Account Is Firing Shots at Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare [UPDATE]

2016's blockbuster shooter war is getting nasty.

[UPDATE] Titanfall 2 developer Respawn Entertainment has responded to the Titanfall Twitter account's jab at Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, noting that the @Respawn Twitter account "is the official voice of" the studio.

"We have nothing but respect and love for our fellow devs," the tweet continued.

Original story: November is a big month for shooters, with Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2, and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare battling for the attention, time, and hard-earned cash of gamers worldwide.

It seems the claws are out over at Respawn Entertainment and EA, as evidenced by a tweet that draws attention to a review describing Infinite Warfare's combat as "mostly slow and plodding."

The link included in the tweet redirects to IGN's Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare review and also quotes from the site's Titanfall 2 review, which says the game's energetic movement mechanics and shooting create "frantic precision" that is "electrifying." The tweet then invites readers to pick between the two games.

These kinds of Twitter jabs are common with large companies and video game developers, and often it's just a bit of friendly banter that's taken in stride. However, there's a history between Respawn and Infinity Ward, developers of Infinite Warfare, that gives this particular tweet a little more bite.

Respawn was founded by Jason West and Vince Zampella, who headed up Infinity Ward when it revolutionised the first-person shooter genre with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. They also worked on two Modern Warfare sequels that cemented Call of Duty as the premier shooter franchise.

Both West and Zampella were later fired by Call of Duty publisher Activision for "breaches of contract and insubordination," however. The pair went on to establish Respawn and develop Titanfall, which is published by EA.

With Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2, EA has two of the three major shooters releasing during the holiday period. However, analysts Cowen & Company said Titanfall 2 sales are going to be "substantially disappointing." They could even be bad enough to offset how strong Battlefield 1 is expected to be.

It also questioned EA's decision to release both of its blockbuster shooters within a week of each other.

"We suspect EA believed that by launching two shooters next to Call of Duty it could put a large dent in its biggest competitor, but instead EA appears to have wound up shooting its own foot off," it said.

For its part, EA CEO Andrew Wilson previously said that Titanfall 2 and Battlefield 1 cater to different types of shooter players, giving EA broad coverage of the genre. During an earnings call on November 1, EA CEO Andrew Wilson was asked if he'd do things differently in the future and give its shooters more space, and reiterated this position.

"We think there's really three types of players," Wilson said. "People that really love Battlefield and that kind of big strategic gameplay that will orient in that direction; the player that loves the fast, fluid, kinetic gameplay of Titanfall 2 that really orient in that direction; and the player that just has to play the two greatest shooters this year and will buy both.

"And again, we're very very excited about the quality in both titles," he continued. "We believe they both will have a long sale cycle, both this quarter through the festive season and deep into the years to come."

During Activision's recent earnings call, CEO Eric Hirshberg said Infinite Warfare is not expected to sell as well as 2015's game, Call of Duty: Black Ops III. This, he said, was because Infinite Warfare is a new Call of Duty brand, while Black Ops is an established, best-selling one.

Titanfall 2 received a score of 9/10 in GameSpot's review. Critic Mike Mahardy concluded, "In many ways, Titanfall 2 feels like the game Respawn should have made in 2013. It's a fantastic sequel. It's a fluid shooter. It's a spectacular game."

In GameSpot Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare review, Miguel Concepcion awarded the game an 8/10.

"While no Call of Duty game has matched the comprehensive excellence of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the exploits of Reyes and Ethan are at least as memorable and moving as any deeds from "Soap" MacTavish and John Price during from the series' heyday," he said.

Isn't Titanfall 2 the new COD? I mean, they made it good, right? So, in that retrospect, Titanfall 2 is the next step in the series. Kudos to Infinity Ward and Treyarch, but they're the 343 studios of COD. The "other" guys. The good news, lots more high quality shooters to play. Hopefully Epic can get back in the mix.

You know I have to deal with a bunch of a high-school drama bullshit millenialism at work, and then my weekend comes and I think "Boy, it will be nice to put all that stuff behind me and unwind with some games, maybe some game news and stuff and see what's going...just get away from the nonsense that makes up my life".

But I can't get away from it. There is no escape from the drama. It's everywhere, man, EVERYWHERE!

Just trying to create some "buzz" for TF2.

Heres a tip to Respawn and EA: Don't try to compete with the two highest selling fps games in history.

I loved Titanfall and absolutely love Titanfall 2. I will still pick up COD because a lot of my buddies still play. I am hoping it is at least decent.

What's funny is I can run around on TF2 for literally 5 minutes and not find an enemy sometimes, but in COD:IW I never go more than like 15 seconds without a gun fight.

You tell me which ones sounds more frantic?

@gamer162594: Literally 5 minutes? That means you must hide in the corner of the map for half the match...The games fast paced and perfectly done, don't listen to this scrub.

@barch88: I'll time it next time, but you get the point. They tried to say one was fast and the other was slow....but if you actually play them both (like me) you know they are both very fast paced and hectic.

However...between the two....TF2 definitely has moments where you're like "WTF is everyone!" as you run through the giant map with only 6v6.

@deadheadbill: Pretty sure it does. Look up its informal definition then get back to me. Also take a chill pill on video game web site comment sections....not exactly the place for the grammar police to be lurking.

@gamer162594 That was more of a either you're full of shit if you say you can run around "literally" for 5 minutes in TF2 and not see an enemy or you don't know the definition of the word. Guess I know which one it was now.

If you had said "I see enemies much more often in Infinite Warfare" instead of using such hyperbole then I would not have even bothered to comment.

I was torn between the two. I finally decided to get titanfall 2 and looking at reviews and gameplays of cod I feel i have made the right decision. I have BF1 which complements T2 nicely. Plus Titans....who doesnt like Titans?

@draco_evolve: You made the wrong choice. Titanfalls campaign is short and lackluster. While Infinite Warfare's campaign is awesome and the multiplayer is much better than titanfalls too. Tbh Titanfall 2 is half the game COD IW is. And I've played both.

@youareatoe: sorry but if you can tell me a FPS that has been released in the past 20yrs that's NOT Ease of play, your good..

As far as i can see person choose BF because they don't die as quick (bigger maps) and it has the better graphics, and person choose CoD because of it frantic pace and smaller layouts..

All FPS now is ease of use, if it wasn't person wouldn't buy the thing...

Sooner or Later TF will hit that sweet spot where isn't hard to break the formula, what will they do then throw away there money maker..

Most like to hate on COD, but hardly anyone is coming up with a solution that fits Cod play style..

Please do kindly tell what you would do to fix it, and i don't want to hear bring it back to WW1 or WW2 era because that's not fixing that's just a change of setting or make the maps bigger because also that didn't work in CoD Ghost

The honest truth is CoD and BF has peaked in terms of where they can take warfare.. I even find BF meh because its just WW1 with shiny skin, COD is MEH also, TF while it feels cool is just seems like and extension of Mech Warrior, just that now you can get out of mechs etc..

Lets be frank here the FPS genre IS stale on a whole, and we all can blame that on BF and COD, because mostly they just chance scenery and they don't want to change there successful formula.. TF IS heading that same direction if we have a new one every 2yrs

@slypher9: honestly though the devs gotta be tired of it. Id just make a different game. Yeah i know btf has ease of play in it like l pick ups and behemoths. Yet it still does not cater to the noob. Bullet drop being a prime example. Quick scope on cod then expect to do the same on btf...that's a funny moment to me. I admit im a btf fan over both TF and Cod. I also admit dice just made two crap title's. Hardline and battlefront. I never wanted something to spice up the brand. I just wanted a quality title. So no i dont think any one needs to be fresh. I just want quality. Btf 1 feels fresh to me...because its that same thing i loved. Cod needs to stop changing. We dont need a new experience...fps can only change so much. At the end of the day you shoot stuff. I dont need a revamping of the brand...just a quality game. All this guy ever needed was a few maps and guns...not something different. They have been working so hard to change the brand. Yet its still cod. If devs are so bored work on a new game. Cod is like the herp that comes up once a year...do we remember the day fondly? yeah but it itches my dick to think what drastic change will come next.

You know dude great arguing btw. I enjoyed it. Bitches be like "why argue"...because this is the thunder dome bitch. Its fun to talk about thing's im passionate for... any way at the end of the day i pretty much agree. Other then cod being better then titanfall.

There tring to sell me Infinite Warfare all on it's lol!.. I thought that was funny because I have ZERO interest.. I have battlefield 1 and loving it as am a rank 7 on my support class, Love the BAR assault rifle and the camera angle when mortaring.. It's like a mini map within itself. Bought Titanfall 2 but haven't played it yet.. Been really busy with gears 4 and other releases..

@Jago-Vs-Fulgore: It's digital only on PC. Retailers won't have it.

Lot of games came out in a month span, insane year for gaming.

Don't let the hate for COD:IW fool you though. If you like COD games you'll like IW, cuz it's a good COD game.

I have no illusions that Titanfall 2 is going to dethrone CoD in this iteration. But it is the better game hands down and hopefully with all the good reviews(both professional and word of mouth) it will at least get enough Cod fans to give it a try so that they can see that for themselves.

TitanFall 2 is an amazing game. FREE DLC! No Season Pass BS required, you buy the game you get everything with it! It's fast paced, fluid, runs like a dream and it's basically everything CoD Black Ops 3 was with better wall running and boosts, plus Titans...Let's not forget about the Titans... I have BF1 and it's great, but they are two totally different games. I don't plan on picking up the new CoD, seems like the same old same old if you ask me.

@SprSynJn To be honest Titanfall 2 and BF1 are completely different, but compliment each other nicely. When I have just played two 30 minute rounds of Conquest with a team full of snipers and kdr whores it is nice to jump into Titanfall 2 for some 10 minute twitch shooting excellence.
