Toki Tori 2 headed for Wii U
Dutch developer Two Tribes announces plans to bring its puzzle platformer sequel to Nintendo's HD console; plans to incorporate a level editor in the works.
In 2008, Dutch developer Two Tribes adapted and released its 2001 Game Boy Color puzzle platformer Toki Tori for WiiWare to positive critical reception.
The studio has now announced plans to release the game's sequel, Toki Tori 2, on Nintendo's upcoming HD console, in addition to previous plans for a PC and Mac release.
In an update on the Two Tribes blog earlier today, the developer outlined the decision to include the Wii U in its platform plans for Toki Tori 2 due to Nintendo's recently released information detailing its online strategy.
"Since Toki Tori 2 is designed to be a downloadable title, these things are vital to making the correct choice of which platforms to develop for," the developer said. "Up until now, we could just focus on the initial release for Steam, where we decided to go for traditional directional controls on keyboard or joypad. The translation of those controls to the Wii U controller should be smooth sailing as it features two analog sticks and we only need two buttons for the whistle and stomp moves. But the Wii U controller offers many more options, of course."
The developer went on to outline the benefits of playing Toki Tori 2 directly on the Wii U controller without the need for a TV because the game has been designed with "minimal use for a graphical user interface," making it suited to a smaller widescreen display. Two Tribes also revealed its intention to incorporate a level editor using the Wii U controller (something it attributes to fan requests) but said it does not intend to include motion controls in Toki Tori 2, as this would not fit with the game's current design.
However, Two Tribes was quick to reiterate that the plans are just speculation at this point, given how little is known about the Wii U's ability to share and store levels.
Toki Tori 2 is due out on the PC and Mac in the second quarter of 2012.
