Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 Multiplayer Hands On

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 improves on the cooperative modes found in the original and adds a series of new competitive modes to the mix.

When we reviewed Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas back in 2006, one of the things that stood out was a rewarding multiplayer experience, something that has been tacked on as an afterthought in some shooters.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 was under wraps until recently and is now just around the corner. Not long ago we went to Montreal and had a look at the single-player campaign, but we hadn't seen the multiplayer mode until now. We recently caught up with Ubisoft Montreal's game designer Philippe Therien in London, and he took us through some of the new additions to the multiplayer side of the game.

New maps have been included in RSV2 including this frantic one dubbed Villa.
New maps have been included in RSV2 including this frantic one dubbed Villa.

Ubisoft has tweaked the cooperative campaign mode and added a series of multiplayer modes with Vegas 2. We played a near-final build on the Xbox 360. The final version will be out in stores on March 14 in Europe and will support up to 16 players, online and offline, on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Downloadable content was strongly hinted at, but there is no official word as yet.

Because Vegas 2 uses the same Unreal Engine used in the first game, Ubisoft has been able to spend more development time improving the artificial intelligence, graphics, and multiplayer experience. One important aspect for Ubisoft in developing Vegas 2 was to make sure there was no reduction in graphics quality in multiplayer games. Rest assured that the graphics certainly looked promising.

There are 11 new weapons in Vegas 2, and some of the existing weapons have been tweaked--the shotgun reload speed, for example, has been increased from somewhat sluggish to a speedy half-second between shots. The changes in bullet penetration mean that choosing your weapon has taken on a new level of importance. The physics associated with your chosen cover will determine how much damage you'll sustain when hiding behind it--while solid concrete and metal are pretty hard to penetrate, hiding behind a plywood wall is just asking for trouble.

Ubisoft has added a new sprint function to Vegas 2, which is activated by a quick button press. While it can be used only in short bursts, unlike in Gears of War, it's still good for dashing between cover or trying to cross smaller open areas. However, like in Gears of War, you won't be able to shoot while sprinting.

Cooperative play in Vegas has been revamped, and the whole story campaign can now be played from start to finish with seamless switching between one and two players. If you're playing through the campaign, a friend can jump in and play as one of your team--if your friend quits out, the system will resume control of the character.

In addition to a reworked co-op mode, new competitive multiplayer modes should provide some fresh experiences for seasoned Rainbow Six fans. We played them over an Xbox 360 system link with two five-person teams, and what we saw was plenty of fun.

The first new mode, team leader, involves protecting your leader from elimination. To successfully complete the match, you'll need to get your leader to an extraction zone or eliminate the other team. There is a twist, however--both leaders can see where the opposite team leader is on the map, which appears as a star in your heads-up display. As long as a team's leader is alive, the members of that team can respawn back into the action if killed. However, if the team leader kills an opponent, the victim can no longer respawn. If a team leader is killed, the members of his team can no longer respawn. If both team leaders are eliminated, it becomes a survival mode with no more respawning. We played team leader on an indoor/outdoor construction site with plenty of objects to hide behind--think cars, burning oil drums, half-finished brick walls, and those seemingly paper-thin plywood walls. Team leader will be no surprise for those familiar with Counter-Strike's VIP mode, but it has a distinctive Rainbow Six flavour.

Team demolition has also been borrowed from Counter-Strike: One team is required to plant a bomb, and the other must deactivate it within the given time limit. There are two possible bomb planting locations, though, so the defenders must defend both, and then converge upon the bomb if it is planted. They have 60 seconds to defuse the bomb. Unlike in Counter-Strike, both teams will know exactly when and where the bomb has been planted, as it is illustrated by an icon on your HUD.

RSV2 adds new competitive modes including total conquest.
RSV2 adds new competitive modes including total conquest.

We played bomb mode on an indoor map modelled after a gaming tournament, which seemed a cleverly ironic touch. Once the bomb was planted, carnage ensued, with both teams swarming to the bomb site to try to seize control. As with many actions in Vegas 2, you'll be rewarded with experience points when you successfully plant a bomb. After playing a few games, our rank was upgraded to private second class, and we unlocked the ballistic goggles, tactical helmet, and balaclava as a bonus.

Total conquest, the third new multiplayer mode, was particularly memorable and could provide hours of frustration, or glee, depending on your skill and teamwork. The match we tried involved holding three choke points in Villa, which is a small map of a single mansion, a courtyard, and a garage. The goal is to activate three satellite dishes and keep them in your team's control during a 30-second countdown while an uplink is established. This sounds a lot easier than it is. All players know where the dishes are--they're visible as points on the screen--and icons at the bottom right corner of your HUD show which team controls them. If you manage to control all of the dishes, you'll then have to protect them for the duration of the countdown. It can be quite frantic when control of the choke points switches back and forth between the teams, but it's also rewarding when your team manages to win the match.

Once we'd successfully endured several skirmishes, and some slightly out-of-place Enya-esque relaxation music, our rank was increased to specialist. We also unlocked three new camouflage patterns: DPM desert (red), Cadpat (green), and Russian (blue).

Like the single-player campaign in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2, multiplayer looks and sounds quite promising and, while not a huge creative--or geographic--departure from the previous Vegas, should hopefully live up to the standard set by Rainbow Six Vegas. Multiplayer maps will take you to many of the single-player locales not seen in the first game, including the Nevada desert, the Las Vegas monorail, "old Vegas," the industrial refinery, and a strip club.

COD4 is a fantastic game worthy of all the Acolades it achieved, DONT campare COD4 to R6 as they are completely different styles of game, if you like running jumping, jumping and running then i strongly advise HALO, but for a more stylish & Tactical experience then get this!!!

Ssgt_Mapp: I believe this is going to be the last Vegas game, so I doubt there'll be a cliffhanger ending. Game looks awesome, though.

chickenselect, I didn't say that they were bad games, I didn't say that at all, all I said was that they have more potential to be greater games than what they are today! The problem I have with COD4 is that a 9mm bullet will go through a wall, but a Soviet made RPG-7 has a problem with it. Honestly, how difficult would it be to add being able to blow apart cover as well as the ability to shoot through it? Just leaving a very 2D looking bullet hole on both sides of the wall just doesn't cut it anymore, I mean the bullet damage to the walls in F.E.A.R. was immaculate and going down hill from a 2005 production is sad. And CRYSIS was to short, even on DELTA the AI wasn't leaps and bounds above anything that has been done before, and lets face throwing North Korean soldiers through beach huts was a laugh, and chopping down trees with a mini-guns, rockets and Frags was fun, but why were the flag poles so resilient to damage, were they made out of DI LITHIUM CRYSTALS from the Enterprises WARP Reactor, or did that one just slip their minds? Look the designers at CRYTEK do have my appreciation for pushing the bar and setting a new standard for pc gaming in general, and I'm sure that with a few patches and expansion packs maybe a sequel, the game will come into its own as a future classics, but at the moment with games like F.E.A.R., BIOSHOCK, HALO 3 and RAINBOW 6: VEGAS its hardly the pinnacle of FPS games. And lets get one thing straight just because something looks good doesn't make it good.

Sound good. An looks really nice. This is at least something to get my hopes up on. I am not sure if I will buy it though. Vegas was the best in the series and I bought that, I think this will be better. For some reason I think I will wait on it.

@Rochie101 Please, CoD4 and Crysis "weren't all they were cracked up to be"? I would confidently say you are the only person in the world to think this. IIA 2008 is evidence of this. CoD4 is an impeccable game as well as Crysis, and the two are leagues away from games like Blacksite and Timeshift.

COD4 is a GOOD game that failed to live up to it potential, like CRYSIS, TUROK, TIMESHIFT and BLACKSITE AREA 51. This is just a short list of shooters that weren't all they were cracked up to be. They DO NOT have the were with all to become classics until their designers get off there arses and start to make good on their promises. COD4 is just COD2 with Arabs & Russians instead of Nazis, and i don't remember getting caught up on every little F@#$%^G nook and cranny in COD2, but don't get me wrong it is a good game but its been done, just shooting through walls is not a new feature, anyone remember PERFECT DARK's Rail Gun? Red Faction took this to a new level with GEO-MOD. Now that was the designers thinking outside of the box, trying to give us something new & KUDOS to them for giving us a true classic.

i gust hope that leveling up doesn't take forever, like it did in RSV1. i dont play games online too much, so i dont want to have to play 50 games gust to get a new camo pattern. I like the way it is on COD4. and i know that youre sick of hearing about that game, but its going to be the one RSV2 is compared too. also, i hope they fixed the whole instant-headshot-kill-with-any-gun crap. and the grenade crap. that crap was frustrating. ....crap.

Im really getting sick of hearing about COD4 in every thread I visit on this site, every one claims that its the best shooter ever made just because it has good graphics and good mp. Heck that game couldnt even manage a simple co-op mode or online splitscreen, and its the forth interation of the COD franchise and the gameplay hasnt changed one bit. And no, im not a troll, I actually enjoyed the game, but its deffinatly not up there with the ranks of half life or Goldeneye.

This game will be amazing. Every other game that claims to have a "cover system" needs to take their notes from vegas, yet gears and other shooters with cover systems (why COD4 doesn't have one is beyond me, who throws a flashbang while standing in the doorway??) make terrible cover systems. I got so tired of pushing A for cover in gears and continually getting stuck on the wrong walls. Its a shame most shooters aren't nearly as good as vegas, let alone how good vegas 2 will be.

I hope they fix the contrast problem that the ps3 version of the last game had. You could barely see anything in outdoor areas! Let alone inside the casinos. They better modify the Unreal engine a bit like they did in Stranglehold.

"I feel its just an ordinary FPS nothing special. GS will give it an 8.5 or actually an 8 at best." you my friend don't know a stellar fps when you see one. It's not supposed to be a fast paced shooter with twitch shooting. It's probably too tactical for you or you probably hate the shooting/aiming system. its the number one complaint of haters. rainbow six and gr are a staple for shooters done well.

R6 Vegas1 was one of the biggest Online games ever, and is still big now, R62 will be even better (on XBL anyway). The Rainbow series have always held the 'Best TACTICAL FPS' title and R62 will be no exception. You cant really compare it to COD4 as they are completely different types of games. It was the first game to introduce both First & Third person perspectives (Cover system) which tottally changed the dynamics of what would be a standard FPS. I love COD4, but for that Tactical experience you wont find anything better than R6.

Hope it still allows for glitching thru walls! Anybody know of a game running Unreal (Gears doesn't count) that doesn't allow for shooting thru ostensibly solid objects? I noticed the frontlines demo does the same. With such a buggy engine, I wonder why Silicon Knights is suing Epic... Hmm.
