Tom Clancy's XDefiant Is A Free-To-Play Shooter Mashing Up Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, And The Division

Ubisoft's next multiplayer shooter is a mash-up of different Tom Clancy games, and will be playable in first beta test this August.

With rumors swirling of a new multiplayer game coming from Ubisoft, codenamed "Battlecat" in early leaks, we finally have the first details of Ubisoft's next free-to-play multiplayer shooter--Tom Clancy's XDefiant. Developed by Ubisoft San Francisco, XDefiant is a 6v6 team-focused shooter that's more in the vein of Overwatch and Call of Duty than the tactical cover-based shootouts from recent Tom Clancy games. While Ubisoft's slate of games based on that franchise has stuck mostly close to military-realism and gritty storylines, XDefiant is described by Ubisoft as a fast-paced, "punk rock" take on a Tom Clancy game.

Ubisoft has released an announcement video that provides a general overview of Tom Clancy's XDefiant, which leans heavily into quick, over-the-top skirmishes with other players. In an unusual twist for a Tom Clancy game, it's also something of a mash-up of Ubisoft's slate of military action games, incorporating gadgets and other elements from franchises like Splinter Cell, The Division, and Ghost Recon. This shooter will be a new live-service game for Ubisoft, which will see updates and new content over time. The developers have also hinted that XDefiant could go "beyond" the Tom Clancy universe, perhaps even adding factions from other Ubisoft franchises.

Now Playing: Tom Clancy's XDEFIANT - Official Reveal Trailer

The announcement video showcased the different available factions in their element, and they definitely use some familiar tricks and tools that players have seen from other titles. To be clear, you're not playing as established characters from previous Tom Clancy games, but rather fresh operatives who will move up the ranks. With the four playable factions--focusing on the Echelon, Cleaners, Outcasts, and Wolves--you'll be able to pick a side and expand your character's abilities and arsenal, which also include team-specific ultimates to let loose during fights. The operatives of the Echelon faction uses the same tactics and skills that the super-spy Sam Fisher had in the Splinter Cell series. The Cleaners and Outcasts also carry over many of the familiar gadgets and skills they used as antagonists in The Division. Finally, the Wolves from Ghost Recon: Breakpoint also make an appearance, and they're bringing with them their advanced crowd-control weaponry.

No Caption Provided

Here's a quick rundown of what sort of archetypes these factions fall into, and the gadgets they'll rely on:

  • Echelon: Support-type, use of stealth camo and alternate vision modes.
  • Cleaners: Assault-type, access to flamethrowers and makeshift rockets.
  • Outcasts: Healer-type, use of nanobots and gadgets to revive and restore team health.
  • Wolves: Tank-type, deployable energy shields and heavy weapons.

The developers stated that Tom Clancy's XDefiant will also focus heavily on customization, allowing you to deck out weapons and cosmetics as you see fit. PPlayers will be able to get their hands on the game sooner than you might expect: The first playable beta test for the game will go live on August 5, which will be for players who sign up on the official website. If you want to see more gameplay of the new shooter, we have a short clip to share to below.

Essentially, Tom Clancy's XDefiant is an all-star game filled with the greatest hits of the Ubisoft X Tom Clancy game universe. It's not quite a Super Smash Bros. take on Tom Clancy, but it still looks like an interesting and totally ridiculous spin-off--which is always welcome. While the gameplay looks fun, if a bit early, I still feel that I might need more time to wrap my head around the concept of a "punk rock moshpit" version of a Tom Clancy game--two concepts that seem so diametrically opposed to one another in terms of tone and general philosophy. Still, I'm intrigued, and it looks like it could be a quick and satisfying shooter to get into.

@lionheartssj1: They've been doing that since The Division. And people are still hoping that Ubisoft would make a proper Splinter Cell game. Delusional.

This may have been a cool and interesting concept 10+ years ago, but this has been done OVER and OVER and OVER again. Sad to see them try to attach Tom Clancy to this game in any way.

With all of this GAAS drivel being brought out by Ubisoft, I'll give it two years until Tencent purchase them.

if they want to make a tom clancy gaas why havent they yet made the tom clancy world they talked about long ago.

- take a huge warzone landscape with city and rural sections

- add ghost recon troopers as attacking and defensive soldiers

- add r6 forces to infiltrate key buildings to rescue npc hostages (could be players too) and gain information

- add splinter cells to sneak in the highest security buildings where no traces can be left

- add hawx fighters above ground to provide cover for the ground troops and fight the enemy fighters, to drop supplies

- add endwar generals who have tools to survey the whole battlefield and communicate with troopers about objectives and strategy

- kinda pointless but add division civilian troopers. maybe simply like weaker guerilla versions of ghost recons.

- general scale of 16 ghost recons, 16 divisions, 12 r6s, 4 scs, 12 hawx, 3 generals per team

- all forces exist in the same dimension so r6s and ghost recons fight each other and try to guard key positions from enemy splinter cells. match can be won if enemy forces are eliminated or enough sensitive information is acquired or if general raises a white flag

- realistic tom clancy paint

ofc this game would cost more than small arena shooter with fortnite level graphics and doesnt have have chance for tons of blue bunny suit and plague doctor mask mtx

Too bad. I will be missing out on this as well because nothing beats a good SP campaign and the online cheating in PC Versions is out of control.

One more thing: Sam Fisher highly disapproves of this new game.

Last time I saw this much negative reception for a reveal was the Sonic the Hedgehog first movie trailer.

Gamewise, it's up there with DmC and Metroid: Federation Force. Let's see if Ubi is as stupid as Capcom and Nintendo and don't listen to fa- what am I saying.... of course they're pretty stupid.

@hardwenzen: they'll only destroy themselves if this performs as poorly as Hyperscape.

Hopefully it does.

I mean did anyone play Hyperscape?

Its funny, as these series kept going on, I felt they all played the same...might as well bundle them all up into one single game, no one wants to play.

Nobody asked for this. All we want is another Splinter Cell. Is it that hard to just do that instead of this MP focused BS there Ubisoft? I just hope Clancy's estate is getting all the money they can out of this at this point because of his name and before anyone blasts me because of that just remember, Clancy himself when he was still alive really didn't have much to do with any of the games and just had his name on them to sell them. He was only really involved way early on when it was still Red Storm Entertainment before Ubisoft bought them.

@mrbojangles25: Read Without Remorse and you'll see how crappy the movie version was compared to the book. Seriously, there was nothing about that movie that was remotely like the book. The only reason they even did that was so they could setup the Rainbow Six movie which they'll inevitably screw up too I'll bet.

@deth420: The book is much better and definitely worth reading. Wish they had actually adapted that properly instead of whatever the hell that movie was. I can't stand Michael B. Jordan either. He is NOTHING like Clark as described in the book. Even Willem Dafoe was a better choice for the part back in the 90's when he played Clark in Clear and Present Danger.

@Pyrosa: The Division was more or less based on a scenario that sounded like something Clancy could've written if he was still alive but other than that none of these games with his name slapped on them have jack squat to do with him.

@Pyrosa: I know, it's just a phrase, an expression.

I've been a reader of Tom Clancy for a long time, however, and this might surprise you but he actually took interest in games in the beginning, so he did care about them.

While I am not any sort of agent of his estate I'm pretty sure he would take issue with this direction. Then again, maybe not; I am pretty sure he was a traditional capitalist and conservative and didn't really care as long as his heirs got paid lol.

But, as you said, he is dead, and sold the rights prior to that. Doesn't mean we can't argue this is what he did or did not intend to do with his name.

@what101: I doubt it. As long as the $$$ rolls in from whatever his name is on they're happy I'll bet. Hell they are still books being put out with his name on them too. Just saw one the other day at Barnes and Noble called Target Acquired that's part of the Jack Ryan Jr. series of books that has Ryan's son as an adult now carrying on his father's legacy as a CIA agent. It even has him team up with Ding Chavez from Rainbow Six no less.

@ironhorse89: This seems sort of common with authors; either the "franchise" continues, or the family keeps writing.

I've read one of those "Jack Jr" books, it was....OK. He is basically an assassin or works for an assassin agency. I Can't remember it was a few years ago, but Clancy didn't write it, but it was basically an author who was approved to use the Clancy license by the "Clancy estate" for whatever reason.

Likewise, my favorite author, Frank Herbert, his son Brian Herbert continued writing the Dune series to mixed acclaim and while some of the books were downright weird and gore-porn at times, I guess it continued the Dune story so I can't complain too much?

I suppose in the end that's all we want.

But video games is different! I can't apply my mental gymastics to it to make it work out, use my creativity to justify it. The visuals are already done and presented to me unlike with writing.

This makes me feel gross and sad.

Gross because free to play = not free

Sad because Tom Clancy used to be a beloved franchise full of great tactical shooters and singleplayer campaigns.

I mean seriously how hard is it to give us a good singleplayer splintercell game? Doesn't even need to be that fancy looking or have multiplayer; just throw some money at a small crew of dedicated employees that want the same thing we want and let them make the game we deserve to have.

See, it's stuff like this that makes me Put EA above Ubisoft. On my list of "Great to crap game devs".

Because even though EA kills/cancels a lot of IPs, and ruins a ton of game series. At least they retained more of their IPs than Ubisoft.

Just look at the list:

No new Rayman

No new Splinter Cell

No new Prince of Persia

No new Beyond good and Evil

No single player Tom Clancy game with no emphasis on Online play

No new Settlers

No new Assassin's Creed that follows the main story plot

No skull and bones

No Star Wars game they hinted at

AC is boring and grindy as hell now.

They killed off 5 of my favorite games and ruined another. I'm literally only left with Far-Cry. And god knows if that doesn't turn into a battle royale shooter series from now on (Ubisoft, don't get a single f***ing idea).

@illegal_peanut: Not to mention, they copy the same (mediocre) game formula's across all their games, making them feel somewhat similar despite being different IP's. The lack of innovation and good storytelling is very apparent for over a decade now, yet Ubisoft seems uninterested in adressing the issues.

EA has major issues as well, but despite all that I can say that they have several games in their library that I enjoy. For Ubisoft, Far Cry is the only current AAA franchise that has me interested, and only in smal doses at a time.
