Tom Holland Is Taking A Break From Acting, Says Maybe It's Time For A Spider-Woman

"We've had three Spider-Mans in a row; we've all been the same. It'd be nice to see something different."

Spider-Man actor Tom Holland has spoken about taking a break from acting to focus on starting a family and getting involved with projects outside of Hollywood.

Holland, 25, told People, "I've spent the last six years being so focused on my career. I want to take a break and focus on starting a family and figuring out what I want to do outside of this world."

He added that he is excited to one day become a father, and if he could have a career outside of acting, he might be a school teacher.

Holland's latest movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, is in theaters now, and it's projected to make a lot of money. Holland said he is grateful to Sony and Marvel for the job, and he doesn't want to hang up the suit--although he admitted it might be time to do so.

"I don't want to say goodbye to Spider-Man--but I feel like we might be ready to say goodbye to Spider-Man," he said. "I don't want to be responsible for holding back the next young person that comes in who deserves it just as much so."

Sony producer Amy Pascal recently said a new Spider-Man trilogy of films with Holland could be in the works, but importantly, no deal has been made, so this is not a sure thing. Whatever the case, Holland said he's hoping to see the Spider-Man franchise become more diverse with respect to who plays the lead role. "Maybe you have a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman," he said. "We've had three Spider-Mans in a row; we've all been the same. It'd be nice to see something different."

As for taking a break from acting, Holland isn't doing that just yet. He'll be seen next in the Uncharted movie alongside Mark Wahlberg in February 2022. And after that, he will play Fred Astaire in a biopic.

@kutraz: So first you make overly dramatic comments about females in the MCU, and then you bring silly race comments into the discussion for apparently no reason at all?

Your histrionics about everything is amusing.

@thecupidstunts: There is a reason, and it ties in with my other comment. I am on board with the idea of, "anything goes, we are all people", so let's reinforce that message by also having a male BW and a white BP. Let's push it as far as we can, why not a black wolverine and a Mexican cyclops?

@regulars101: You're so right, just the mere mention of a female now is VS/pandering.

EDIT: We're talking about a character that has already existed for quite a while, so no need to feel so threatened by it.

@thecupidstunts: I definitely don't think the mere mention of a female protagonist to be neither virtue signaling nor pandering. Although, in this context I think it fits quite well.

@regulars101: If it was a character that didn't already previously exist, then we could reasonably talk about VS/pandering. But since she already does, people talking about it, (especially in this context), just sound like they're somehow very uncomfortable with women.

Just my opinion on it, not saying it makes me right. Also, I had edited my initial post before your response.

@thecupidstunts: Threatened? Not in the slightest lol... My assertion of pandering has far less to do with the character, and more to do with the actor. Holland is looked at to be fairly progressive, by my accounts due to, well, pandering and/or virtue signaling. While he may be sincere, I find sincerity in Hollywood to be questionable at best.

Just my opinion as well.

Hang on, I need to vomit at your use of the word “diverse.”

Bearing in mind this film was essentially a course correction, it would be nice to see one where Holland finally plays Spidey as the character it sets up.

Tom Holland is one of my all time favorite actors, and this dude is just humble. If he does decide to go this route I will be very happy for him, but will miss his acting.

@thecupidstunts: Just review the lineup, pretty much all of them flipped with the exception of the female characters (BW, Captain Marvel, etc.)

@kutraz: So you mentioned two women, and somehow that now = "we won't have any male characters in the MCU".

The last time I checked, Thor, Spiderman, The Hulk, Captain America, Hawkeye, Dr. Strange, Ant Man, Shang Chi, Nick Fury, Winter Soldier, War Machine, Vision, Peter Quill, Drax, (and on and on), didn't magically cease to exist with the introduction of a few female characters.

@thecupidstunts: I gave you the counterpoint to what I am describing.

She hulk, iron heart, kate bishop, America Chavez, lady thor, shrui taking over the BP legacy, possibly this spider woman becoming a thing. All I am saying is, if the originals all flip, well let's see the male version of BW and Captain Marvel.

Drax? really? To force a female Drax would have been stretching it too far. Even the movement has its limits.

@kutraz: I am okay with a higher % of hot girls in tights kicking butt then dudes. I could almost stand for it to be as high as 99%. I mean when ant man goes to 5 stories tall, no one wants him tea bagging the imax screen.

Holland also can't take a break. Feige literally just said a couple weeks ago that Holland is replacing Downey Jr as the soul of the MCU and becoming its leadership figure.

Ahhhhh Spoken like a man whose made more money in a movie than 90% of the world will make in a lifetime.

Honestly thou. Spiderman, in my opinion, is an oasis in a dead desert of creativity. It's the only trilogy that feels like it has a point. I'd like to see them explore it properly.

Look at the last 10 years or so. It's a sea of space fillers, followed by a sh*tf*ck of an "interpretation" of the Avengers Endgame which somehow ended up with Time Travel and 6 hours of plotholes.

He is too young to do that already in my opinion, but hey, if that makes him happy! More diverse? Movies in 2021 can't get anymore diverse. Lol. Especially Disney.

I'm hoping they use the multi-verse to set up adding new characters into the franchise beyond the norm we typically see. So we can possibly see a Spider-Gwen or Spider-Woman and really tap into characters we haven't enjoyed yet. I'd love to see the Rhino come back tbh, they did him dirty in amazing spider-man 2.

Tom Holland needs to become acquainted with the source material since it's his franchise too. Spider-Woman already exists. But then, Spider-Man is as far removed from the source material as Disney could have made him anyway, so maybe it's for the best Holland doesn't see how Spidey IS supposed to look and act. For a start, actually being the only hero in his own movie would help. Maybe he'll team up with Blade in Spider-Man 4, and then team up with the Eternals in Spider-Man 5 because why not. I don't understand how they can be so faithful to the comics with a total unknown like the Guardians of the Galaxy (and even Eternals) but not the 3rd most loved superhero across DC AND Marvel, who EVERYONE knows.

First, the guy just signed on for 3 more Spider-Man movies. So he’s set for life. He can easily afford time off now if he wants. Second, I would LOVE a Spiderverse within the marvel universe of movies. There’s lots of great characters they can pull from, including Spider-Woman (bring in Jessica Jones this way), Silk, and others.

@rmulatz: If they’re gonna start pulling in other spider characters, I don’t want to see anyone but Jessica Drew. The small pile of female spider folks they’ve inexplicably drummed up in the last few years don’t have enough personality between them to fill a TikTok.

@rmulatz: thats not true. amy pascal retracked her statement from last month and said nothing is official yet as no deal has been made and she said its ultimated up to Tom Holland if he wants to make more. Currently doesnt seem like he wants to make anymore so who knows now. Its a good way to end Spiderman and decent way of pulling him out of the avengers as they all know of spiderman but dont know who he is and how to get in contact with him.

@errol4tez: I don't think your comment rebuts my own. Any 4th Spiderman movie is many years away given how behind Disney is with their movie schedule right now. Holland isn't retiring, he's just taking a break to have a life. But in an industry where "taking a break" can sometimes mean people forget about you and move on and lose interest in your movies (especially since most of his movies have so-far flopped other than spiderman), I think it makes sense that now is probably the perfect time to take a break. He knows Disney/Marvel want to keep him on and will likely shovel tons of money his way to keep him interested. He has a major safety net right now waiting for him, which actually HELPS him take that time off. He's comfortable in his position and that is most likely tied to having future spiderman movies waiting for him if he wants/needs. He can come back in a couple years and make Spiderman 4 and jump right back where he left off.

I wouldn't say no to a Spider-Gwen or Miles Morales.

Both are established characters with long histories and plenty of material, so you couldn't call it virtue signaling.

As for Holland, good for him for taking a break. I imagine he's been doing nothing but work work work for the past few years given the regular Marvel movies he has been in, plus the other movies he has starred in.

Now Spider Woman I can get behind, since she was made in an Era when woke politics didnt plague, entertainment or the media.

@Dave1927p: Yeah, misses the entire point of the character. The whole idea of Nathan Drake is that he's lived a hard life, down on his luck but his 30ish years of personal pursuits have prepared him to be the right person at the right time to put his own interests aside and become a hero over the course of several insane adventures.

You can't stick a newborn Drake in set pieces from Uncharted 3 or 4. He hasn't earned that yet as a character. I know Holland is 25 but he looks 19 and an inexperienced 19yr old trekking through the desert after surviving a cargo plane crash to save the world (and his marriage) just doesn't fit and I have no interest in divorcing the character from the source material to try and make another generic action/comedy series. Ryan Reynolds and The Rock have run them into the ground.
