Tomb Raider Movie Reboot Gets a Director, New Writer
Norwegian director Roar Uthaug will reportedly direct the upcoming film.
The Tomb Raider movie reboot is moving forward. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Roar Uthaug, who directed the Norwegian disaster movie The Wave, has come aboard to helm the picture. The site also reports that Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Transformers 5) is in "negotiations" to write the screenplay.
A previous report suggested Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), Catherine Hardwicke (Twlight), and Mimi Leder (Deep Impact) were on the shortlist for the director's chair. If Robertson-Dworet does indeed get the screenplay gig, she'll be taking over for TMNT writer Evan Daugherty, who wrote the most recent script.
Uthaug has directed a number of Norwegian movies, but Tomb Raider would be his first English language picture. His other credits include a horror movie called Cold Prey and a children's film titled Magic Silver. He also directed action movie Escape and the aforementioned Wave.
Specific story details for the Tomb Raider reboot are being kept under wraps for now, but THR reports that the film will "detail Lara Croft's first adventure." The project is a collaboration between four companies--GK Films, Warner Bros, MGM, and Square Enix.
The previous two Tomb Raider films--2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003's Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life--starred Angelina Jolie as the iconic British archaeologist. The first movie remains the highest grossing video game adaptation ever in the US, but the disappointing box office for The Cradle of Life, combined with Jolie's reluctance to revisit the character, meant that a third film never materialized.
