Tomb Raider TV Series Reportedly "Dead"

Following the departure of a key Prime Video executive, the video game TV show may no longer be happening.

Prime Video's upcoming Tomb Raider TV series from Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge is reportedly "dead." That's according to sources speaking to Daily Mail, which said scripts for the series were taking a long time to come together and were deemed not ready for filming.

Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner was reportedly the top choice to play Lara Croft in the series, but she may no longer be involved, the report said. Prime Video declined to comment when approached by Daily Mail.

The Tomb Raider series for Prime Video was greenlit under the leadership of Amazon MGM Studios boss Jennifer Salke, but Salke recently exited the company amid reports of a power struggle. Salke was said to be personally overseeing the Tomb Raider series, and now that she's out, the series may be gone, too.

Matthew Belloni of Puck reported in March that the Tomb Raider series went through multiple writers rooms, with "tens of millions" spent on development costs.

Salke previously said she expected Tomb Raider to be a "huge franchise for us," noting that Waller-Bridge was the right person to lead the project. Waller-Bridge spoke enthusiastically about the series, too, saying she thinks her career has been "building up to this" after working on the James Bond movie No Time To Die and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

While the Tomb Raider series may not be moving ahead, Amazon is publishing the next Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics. This new game was never expected to be connected to the TV series.

Prime Video potentially dropping the Tomb Raider show would be just the latest major shakeup at the company, as it was recently confirmed that Amy Pascal and David Heyman will produce the next James Bond movie for Amazon after the company reportedly bought out franchise stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

It's for the best. I don't think Tomb Raider has a deep enough lore to warrant a TV series.

It would make more sense to make a movie.

Well, that's probably for the best.

Though I have to admit we've been getting some excellent based-on-video-game stuff of late, so maybe this too would have been good.

In either case, no big loss. Plenty of good stuff to watch (and bad, too!)

So, things worked out for the best then. Anytime I see Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s name attached to a project, I lose interest.

@mrbojangles25: Yep. She's (rightfully) acclaimed for the two series of "Fleabag," but I think the first season of "Killing Eve" was even better.

It's still amazing and kind of scary there had to be all sorts of drama to prevent this from happening, instead of somebody just telling Pheobe Waller-Bridge to go f*** herself.

@Thuban_23: out of curiosity, does she have a bad reputation or something? She seems well respected for all I've seen.

@mrbojangles25: Pheobe Waller-Bridge is pretty much Shia LaBeouf after Crystal Skull. Someone billed as "the next big thing" by Hollywood insiders but the character they played wrecked a beloved franchise more due to the actor rubbing off on the character than the character. In another word, they are not good enough actors and has the "anti-it" that Hollywood insiders mistaken as "it".

@wr3zzz: Yeah but Shia lost his mind for a while there and has been crawling his way back. He kind of had it coming. Also Shia was a big famous actor before Crystal Skull, not an up-and-comer.

What exactly did Pheobe do, other than being in a flop? She was successful and known before this as well.

@wr3zzz: That last Indiana Jones movie would have been terrible whether her character was in it or not. Plus, it's hard to blame the actor for the bad writing.

@mogan: yeah I mean you can blame some movie failures on the acting but in general it's usually something else that ruins it.

This trend of blacklisting actors for a movie's failure is kind of concerning.
