Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Remasters Releasing This Year, Won't Have Microtransactions

Activision announces a remaster package featuring the first two games in the series.

Following Activision's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD remaster in 2012, the company is returning with a bigger remaster package that features updated versions of the first two games. Following word from Tony Hawk himself, who sent a text message to fans shortly before the announcement was made official, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC in September.

Developed by Vicarious Visions, the games feature updated graphics, new tricks, additional features, and some of the original games' most iconic music (to get this out of the way upfront, yes, Goldfinger's "Superman" is included). In short, the 1999 and 2000 skateboarding games have never looked better--see for yourself in the screenshots and video embedded in this post.

The games offer all the original levels, professional skaters, tricks, and modes from the classic games. Some of the new features include additional tricks, more goals and challenges, and "secrets" to uncover. The game supports local split-screen multiplayer as well as online play.

The create-a-park and create-a-skater modes also return, and they have even more customization items available to players. You can share your parks online and play those created by other users. In terms of the create-a-skater customization options for clothing and more, all of the different content is available through gameplay exclusively, at least at launch.

Vicarious Visions boss Jen Oneal told GameSpot that there will be no microtransactions in the Tony Hawk remasters at launch, but these could come later. "Everything that you see at launch is going to be unlocked with gameplay. We're not planning on having monetization at launch," Oneal said, adding that Vicarious put a focus on making sure players are getting a "complete package." If there is demand for additional content, Vicarious Visions might consider releasing more stuff to buy with real money down the road.

Tony Hawk's remastered graphics

Something else that may come post-release is cross-platform play. Activision is already pushing into the cross-platform market with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone, but Oneal stopped short of confirming this for the Tony Hawk remasters. "When the time comes we will say more," Oneal said.

In terms of the soundtrack, Goldfinger's iconic "Superman," which is synonymous with the series, is included, as well as songs by Rage Against the Machine, Powerman 5000, Bad Religion, Dead Kennedys, Naughty by Nature, Papa Roach, and Primus, among others. Oneal told GameSpot that Activision was not able to secure every song from the original games due to licensing issues, but the soundtrack will have most of what you remember. "All of your favorites will be there," Oneal said.

Just like in the original games, you can expect to be able to skate as Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Geoff Rowley, Bucky Lasek, Elissa Steamer, Kareem Campbell, Andrew Reynolds, Bob Burnquist, Chad Muska, and all the other skaters from the first two games, now presented in HD.

Oneal explained to GameSpot that Activision is releasing this remaster in 2020 because the '90s are popular again.

No Caption Provided

"Nostalgia is in. Everything '90s is all the craze. The music, the clothes. And now we have the technology to make something truly superior," Oneal said. "It just felt like now was the right time to do it.

Tony Hawk himself said on social media in 2018 that he was no longer working with Activision on the iconic video game series bearing his name. But things can change. Oneal explained to GameSpot that Hawk was involved from the beginning on the remaster project.

"Tony really wanted a very faithful remaster, which is what we are doing. He is still really close to all of the skaters from the first two games, and they're all present [in the remasters]," Oneal said. "We ran plans by him from the get-go, and shared with him any new ideas that we had. He knows what the culture of skate is and how we need to represent it."

No Caption Provided

The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater remasters launch on September 4 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The PC edition is exclusive to the Epic Games Store. The games are only going to be sold through the remaster package containing both titles, and not individually.

The latest new Tony Hawk game was 2015's Pro Skater 5, but it ended up going down as one of the most poorly received mainstream games of that year. Hawk himself released Tony Hawk's Skate Jam in 2018 for mobile devices, marking the first Tony Hawk game not published by Activision.

The announcement of the new Tony Hawk remasters comes after the gigantic success of Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy in 2017. After that game performed ahead of expectations, Activision said it would be looking to release more remasters of its classic games.

The title of this article really should have an ‘and’ instead of a comma 🤮.

As for the news, I suppose it has been over 5 minutes since they’ve done a lazy cash grab.

90's is hands down the best era of music in my 45 years..

Can't believe we didn't get a skate game this generation.

Actually,,this gen has been a major disappointment compaired to the 360/PS3 era.

Look at every genre. Sports,CallDuty/Battlefield..

**I actually thought this was going to be The New Batman game.

Or atleast a Arkham Origins remaster..

Don't believe the Rocksteady Fanboy hate.

ArkhamOrigins was awesome.. I loved how it was the Arkham City map expanded..

**Rocksteady shoulda agreed w/ WB and found a way to include it in the Return to Arkham

bundle....

*Why not just make a New TH Skate game that doesn't suck???

*Whatevs,,I still skate and im almost 50..Actually I skate almost everyday since Covid...

Can anyone honestly explain to me why almost every single time a port, from god knows how many years ago, is announced always releases on Xbox, Playstation and PC but NOT ON SWITCH?

@Chico86_basic: PC, XB1, PS4 all use x86 architecture making porting between them easier. Switch uses ARM so there's more to convert. Plus they need to make some pretty big alterations to get the game running on the lower spec Switch.

@Chico86_basic:

The architecture and parts of the switch are different enough where they can't just slide the software over, and it runs.

It would be like working on two different games while just trying to get 1 finished.

@ganondorf77: The article is very misleading in its title and should be fixed. It clearly is mentioned that they might come later after launch in the article. Eddie needs to either remove that statement in the title or revise it.

If they remaster/remake the first one and not just add the 2012 HD to the collection then it's worth buying. I mean THPS 2 alone is worth getting if it's priced at $29.99, if they want to make it a full $59.99 game then THPS 1 also has to be remade.

So is this going to be another case where they no longer have the song licences and have to cut them for the remaster? What in the 90's is popular again? . I haven't even seen anyone with a Skateboard in years.

@deviltaz35: Maybe but they'll have a lot more songs than the awful HD version that came out a few years ago. They seem to have confused the 80's with the 90's but if we get a great THPS for PS4 I'm all for it! I'm hoping this opens the door for new games.

THPS2 = greatest skateboarding game ever. The perfect game to blaze to, and just zone for hours and hours hitting those insane combos.

Those were the days...

I'm pretty sure the comparison images they are showing is from N64 or Playstation 1. I played Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 and 2 on Dreamcast and remember it looking better than what they showed. While probably not a world changing difference, the Dreamcast versions were certainly the best versions of the time. Either way, it wouldn't hold a candle to current gen, just being nit picky.

Anyways, this looks great, I'm very interested in the Skate park creator. Look forward to seeing more of this.

"Vicarious Visions boss Jen Oneal told GameSpot that there will be no microtransactions in the Tony Hawk remasters at launch, but these could come later. "

Could....

So, yeeah, they'll be there just after it's sold through its launch allotment and gotten the microtransaction-free labeling from the ESRB.

@zmanbarzel: Very misleading title on this article with the inclusion of that info. Gamespot, you really should fix that!

It should say, "won't LAUNCH with microtransactions. "

Actually, watching other videos on this, its a remake... Not sure how I feel about that. Adding manuals to the first game, new tricks... Wish it was the old games just with upgraded graphics.

Also, is it me or does the game look sped up compared to the originals?

@chubby170: I remember manuals being in the first game? It was how we really started getting high points, sticking the landing with a manual to the next half pipe or grind. Played it on Dreamcast though, maybe that was different.

Ill be curious if the physics and everything are exact like the first game. I remember myself and friends would make the goal of getting 1mm points on certain levels. I remember the School level being one of them. The other was Chicago if I remember correctly.

@LVT_PTA_PB: Yeah it is the 80's themes that were more popular than 90's. Can't really stand Stranger things though. Not enough happens in it and it's so repetitive and the girls in it are just totally annoying.

The second is better for me since it has the level editor and that gave me many fun hours of creation. Despite this being an Epic Store exclusive on PC, I may purchase it.

It is a shame that there aren't any Skate games on PC, especially Skate 3, that is my fav of all the Skateboarding games. I hope in the future, EA remasters Skate 3 and includes a PC version.

Remasters and Remakes are coming thick and fast and EA said last year that they plan on making many of the fan-favourites. I hope this does include Skate 3, but also we need Burnout 3: Takedown, Def Jam: Fight for NY, Road Rash Jailbreak and Fight Night Round 4 - All with PC versions 😁

Hot damn, that's awesome.

I spent the weekend playing Session for the first time, and it's still not there yet (obviously)

The genre is so void this gen where anything is great. But this looks gorgeous with the lighting and props filling in the scenes.

Can't wait to try it out~
